What is a Leader?

Key Verse: “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who does not enter the sheepfold by the door, but climbs up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber. But he who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. To him the doorkeeper opens, and the sheep hear his voice; and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. And when he brings out his own sheep, he goes before them; and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice. Yet they will by no means follow a stranger, but will flee from him, for they do not know the voice of strangers.” John 10:1-5 (NKJV)
Purpose: The purpose of this lesson is to help the disciple understand the basic qualities that define a godly leader.
“Leadership is INFLUENCE. That’s it. Nothing more; nothing less. My favorite leadership proverb is: He who thinketh he leadeth and hath no one following him is only taking a walk.” [John Maxwell, Developing the Leader within You (Thomas Nelson Publishers; Nashville, TN 1993), p. 1]
Everyone has the POTENTIAL of leadership inside.
The evidence of leadership is the ability to get FOLLOWERS.
True leaders do not have to declare themselves as the leaders.
The evidence of SUCCESSFUL leaders is successful followers.
Successful leaders are developed from good FOLLOWERS.
We cannot lead people where we refuse to be led.
1 Corinthians 11:1 (KJV) “Be followers of me, even as I also am of Christ.”
Successful leaders spend quality TIME with God.
Joshua 1:8 Meditate in the word day and night
Luke 5:16 Jesus often spent time with God in prayer.
Successful leaders are willing to pray the price.
Lead only where clear direction from God has been revealed.
Successful leaders lead through OBEDIENCE to God.
When asked about the secret to his success, David Yonggi Cho, pastor of the world’s largest church in Seoul, Korea, said “I pray and I obey.”
To succeed in life and not obey God is the ultimate failure.
Successful leaders are first successful at HOME.
If we cannot lead at home, then we cannot lead others effectively outside the home.
Successful leaders lead with VISION.
They understand God’s purpose.
They have vision of where God is leading.
They can impart vision to others.
Successful leaders learn to COMMUNICATE with followers.
Successful leaders strive to become BETTER leaders.
Matthew 10:24 (NKJV) “A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a servant above his master.”
The growth of committed followers depends on the QUALITY of leadership.
Leadership development is a lifetime commitment lived out one day at a time.
Successful leaders are HUMBLE. (Romans 12:3; I Peter 4:7)
Successful leaders are CONFIDENT in God.
They have nothing to prove.
They have nothing to hide.
They have no selfish motive.
They have no hidden agenda.
Successful leaders are FAITHFUL in all things.
Without trust a person loses his ability to influence others. Without the ability to influence, we lose the ability to lead.
Trust takes a lifetime to build but can be destroyed in a moment.
Successful leaders walk with INTEGRITY.
Integrity is being true to your convictions.
Integrity is when your mouth and your heart agree.
Integrity is honesty and transparency before God and others.
Successful leaders lead by EXAMPLE.
Successful leaders do not drive followers but lead followers by example.
Successful leaders train others by walking with them in the learning process.
Successful leaders never ask others to do what they are not willing to do themselves.
Successful leaders are TEAM PLAYERS.
Like a team, success comes when everyone is allowed to do their part successfully.
Team players are committed to the success of the team above their own success and fame.
Team players are more interested in results than in who gets the credit.
Successful leaders make PEOPLE their greatest asset.
Successful leaders genuinely love people, not just crowds.
Like a good coach, successful leaders know that the success of the team depends on their ability to bring out the best in each player.
Success is evaluated by the ability to develop successful people.
Success is evaluated by the ability to mine and develop the resources of God buried in the lives of others.
Successful leaders develop godly CHARACTER in themselves and in those they lead.
Character is what you are in the dark.
Character is the “fruit” of the moral seeds sown in life.
Godly character is the key to longevity as a leader.
Successful leaders maintain a POSITIVE attitude.
Attitude determines ALTITUDE.
A bad attitude destroys MORALE in followers.
Successful leaders are PROBLEM SOLVERS.
It doesn’t take a leader to see the problem, but it does take a leader to find the solution.
Successful leaders are PEACE MAKERS.
Anyone can spread strife and division. It takes a leader to reconcile, restore, and unify people.
Successful leaders are SELF-MOTIVATED.
Successful leaders do what others are not willing to do.
Successful leaders demand more of themselves than of others.
Successful leaders go beyond the call of duty.
Successful leaders pay the price for success.
Successful leaders are SELF-DISCIPLINED.
Successful leaders do not allow the weakness of the flesh to disqualify them from the race.
Like successful athletes, successful leaders learn how to discipline their bodies and minds for optimum performance.
Successful leaders develop healthy habits.
Successful leaders set PRIORITIES.
Priorities keep the main thing the main thing.
Priorities keep good things from taking place of the best things.
Everything is important, but only a few things are necessary.
Leaders do what is necessary.
Successful leaders PLAN to succeed.
Successful leaders set goals for success based on their direction from God.
Successful leaders are willing to set goals that will take the help of God to achieve.
Successful leaders press toward their goals.
Successful leaders lead with a spirit of EXCELLENCE.
Excellence is doing the best with what you have been given.
Successful leaders learn from their MISTAKES.
Successful leaders are willing to admit when they are wrong and to learn from their mistakes.
Successful leaders are willing to CHANGE when necessary.
Successful leaders always bring about POSITIVE change.
Successful leaders RISE to the challenge.
They turn tombstones into steppingstones.
They view impossibilities as God’s opportunities.
They choose to believe God rather than the circumstances.
They show courage amid uncertain times.
They will stand alone when necessary for what is right.
Successful leaders choose their BATTLES wisely.
Successful leaders focus on the important battles and do not get distracted with little skirmishes.
Successful leaders fight to take mountains not molehills.
Successful leaders handle PERSONAL ATTACKS in meekness.
Successful people do not lead based on the approval of man but on the approval of God.
Leaders who live for the approval of men will die by their criticism.
Successful leaders welcome the honest criticism of others and are willing to change if necessary.
Successful leaders do not waste time defending themselves before rebels and critics.
Successful leaders do not retaliate. They humble themselves and allow God to defend them.
Successful leaders refuse to get bitter knowing that every adversity prepares them to be a better leader for Jesus’ sake.
Successful leaders bless their enemies and continue to obey God.
Meekness is strength under control.
Successful leaders ENCOURAGE others to believe God.
Successful leaders inspire courage in others.
Successful leaders turn followers into LEADERS.
Successful leaders are not insecure about investing in leaders who may outshine them. (Saul and David)
Successful leaders will be remembered by the leaders they train and release.
Success without a successor is failure.
