A Formula for Lamenting

Choose to Trust
Trusting in God in spite of our circumstances is ultimately an exercise of our will.
But is an exercise of our will according to knowledge.
It is in accordance with who God has revealed himself to be.
God is sovereign, wise, and loving.
The Book of Psalms is also a good place for us to turn when what we believe is not matching up with how we are feeling.
Psalm 56:1–13 CSB
1 Be gracious to me, God, for a man is trampling me; he fights and oppresses me all day long. 2 My adversaries trample me all day, for many arrogantly fight against me. 3 When I am afraid, I will trust in you. 4 In God, whose word I praise, in God I trust; I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me? 5 They twist my words all day long; all their thoughts against me are evil. 6 They stir up strife, they lurk, they watch my steps while they wait to take my life. 7 Will they escape in spite of such sin? God, bring down the nations in wrath. 8 You yourself have recorded my wanderings. Put my tears in your bottle. Are they not in your book? 9 Then my enemies will retreat on the day when I call. This I know: God is for me. 10 In God, whose word I praise, in the Lord, whose word I praise, 11 in God I trust; I will not be afraid. What can mere humans do to me? 12 I am obligated by vows to you, God; I will make my thanksgiving sacrifices to you. 13 For you rescued me from death, even my feet from stumbling, to walk before God in the light of life.

Learning to Trust God Is Not Always Easy/ It is Often Messy

1 Samuel 21:10–15 (CSB)

DAVID FLEES TO GATH
10 David fled that day from Saul’s presence and went to King Achish of Gath. 11 But Achish’s servants said to him, “Isn’t this David, the king of the land? Don’t they sing about him during their dances:
Saul has killed his thousands,
but David his tens of thousands?”
12 David took this to heart and became very afraid of King Achish of Gath, 13 so he pretended to be insane in their presence. He acted like a madman around them, scribbling on the doors of the city gate and letting saliva run down his beard.
14 “Look! You can see the man is crazy,” Achish said to his servants. “Why did you bring him to me? 15 Do I have such a shortage of crazy people that you brought this one to act crazy around me? Is this one going to come into my house?”

Avoiding the Pitfalls (Jerry Bridges)

Acknowledge Our Dependence at All Times: During times of prosperity we are prone to trust in those blessings or even ourselves. In times of adversity, we tend to doubt the the God’s Fatherly Care.
Trust in God Himself and not the instruments of provision He often uses: We must be careful to look beyond the means and human instrumentalities to the God who uses them.
Continue to Trust in the Lord for the Big and Small things of life: A mature Christian is one who trusts God even in the minutiae of daily life. Don’t wait for the major crisis.

Finally, We Choose to Trust Because We Believe By Faith That God Is At Work

1 Peter 1:3–9 CSB
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Because of his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead 4 and into an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you. 5 You are being guarded by God’s power through faith for a salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time. 6 You rejoice in this, even though now for a short time, if necessary, you suffer grief in various trials 7 so that the proven character of your faith—more valuable than gold which, though perishable, is refined by fire—may result in praise, glory, and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ. 8 Though you have not seen him, you love him; though not seeing him now, you believe in him, and you rejoice with inexpressible and glorious joy, 9 because you are receiving the goal of your faith, the salvation of your souls.
