Pre-Sermon Ice Breaker

A man goes to visit a psychologist, he says, “Doctor I think I am a wigwam.:” The Doctor replies, “You think you are a wigwam?” The man answers, “No, I am a Teepee.” The doctor says, “So you are a Teepe?” “No the man says, I am a wigwam.” The doctor observes, “You are not a Teepee, you are a wigwam?” The man says, “Doctor I am confused, I am a wigwan, no a Teepee, no a wigwam.” The Doctor says I know exactly what your problem is.” “You do?” the man says, “Whats wrong.” The doctor says, “Your two tents.”

Introduction

Throughout 2021 we are engaged in the 2021 Scripture Memory Challenge. Each Sunday we as a congregation are receiving a new scripture verse that all of us are attempting to memorize. Each verse includes an Address, a Topic, the verse and the address again. The topics serve as a memory tool and help to connect the verses to larger themes. In January our theme was Salvation, In February Love, In March Service, In April Christ, and in May our theme has been Prayer. on 7 days throughout the year we are taking a break from this pattern for special days. These included Sanctity of Human Life Sunday, Palm Sunday, Easter, 4th of July, Father’s Day and today Pentecost Sunday.
In 2019 we read through the New Testament, In 2020 we read through the New Testament. During this process we emphasized the importance of making cross-references, especially between the two testaments. These cross-references would provide context and help us to better understand God’s Word. Today’s passage is just such an occasion. To understand Joel 2:28, we need to see it in light of Acts 2 and vica-versa.
Acts 2:1 KJV 1900
1 And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.
Acts 2:1-13 tell an amazing story of the events surrounding the beginning of the New Testament Church as we know it.
Acts 2:16 KJV 1900
16 But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel;
verse 17 is the parallel passage to Joel 2:28.
Acts 2:17 KJV 1900
17 And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams:
In our passage today we will answer 3 important questions about Pentecost and then make an application for us today. Let’s study this verse together.

Body

When is Pentecost?

Joel 2:28 KJV 1900
28 And it shall come to pass afterward, That I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; And your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, Your old men shall dream dreams, Your young men shall see visions:
Joel is prophecy. And sometimes the prophet did not understand the full grasp of what he was seeing and saying. Have you ever driven down a hilly road that extents a long distance. It looks like one long, straight, flat road, but as you travel you come upon crests and dips that you did not and could not see in the distance. That is the way that prophecy sometimes appears.
Joel begins with this phrase, “And it shall come to pass afterward” Afterward....after what?
For those in Jesus day Pentecost was of course 50 days after Passover, but specifically it was 50 days after the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ. The disciples heads were still spinning. Jesus had given them some hints what to expect.
John 7:39 KJV 1900
39 (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)
John 16:7 KJV 1900
7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.
John 1:12 KJV 1900
12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:

What is Pentecost?

Joel 2:28 KJV 1900
28 And it shall come to pass afterward, That I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; And your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, Your old men shall dream dreams, Your young men shall see visions:
That I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh.
Acts 2:4 KJV 1900
4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
1 Corinthians 12:30 KJV 1900
30 Have all the gifts of healing? do all speak with tongues? do all interpret?
Rhetorical question and the answer is no.

Why is Pentecost Important?

Joel 2:28 KJV 1900
28 And it shall come to pass afterward, That I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; And your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, Your old men shall dream dreams, Your young men shall see visions:
Galatians 3:28 KJV 1900
28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.
Acts 1:8 KJV 1900
8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
1 Corinthians 14:3 KJV 1900
3 But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort.
Edification means to build up
Exhortation - to call along side
Comfort - is to bring comfort having compassion.

Conclusion

We need an outpouring today of the Holy Spirit upon us not to Bark, or laugh, but to build up people, Call them along side and bring comfort. The Holy Spirit has been given to help you in your Christian walk.
It all begins with Salvation.
It continues with empowerment and service.
