Opening

• Good morning and welcome
• Boudreaux, the smoothest-talking Cajun in the Louisiana National Guard, got called up to active duty. Boudreaux's first assignment was in a military induction center. And because he was such a good talker, they assigned him the duty of advising new recruits about government benefits, especially the GI insurance to which they were entitled. The officer in charge soon noticed that Boudreaux was getting a 99% sign-up rate for the more expensive supplemental form of GI insurance. This was remarkable, because it cost these low-income recruits $30.00 per month for the higher coverage, compared to what the government was already providing at no charge. The officer decided he'd sit in the back of the room at the next briefing and observe Boudreaux's sales pitch. Boudreaux stood up before the latest group of inductees and said, "If you has da normal GI insurans an' you goes to da war zone an' gets youself killed, da governmen' pays you beneficiary $20,000. If you takes out da supplemental insurance, which cost you only t'irty dollars a months, den da governmen' gots ta pay you beneficiary $200,000! "Now," Boudreaux concluded, "which bunch you tink dey gonna send ta da war zone first?"

Message Opening

• PRAY PRAY PRAY!!
• Today is known to the church as Pentecost Sunday
• No matter the denomination, no matter the practice the day is recognized as the day the Holy Spirit was imparted to believers AND the day the church was founded
• Comes from this scripture:
Acts 2:1–4 NKJV
When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

Pentecost

• Our word “Pentecostal” comes from the root “pentecost”
• 50 days after the Resurrection, 10 after the ascension
• Why on the day of Pentecost? Accident?
• Why didn’t God do it on Resurrection day?
• Why not on the day of ascension - Jesus said it would only come after he left
• Why the day of pentectost? And just WHAT is pentecost
• Want to do some teaching today and show you just how awesome this word of God is
• And what Pentecost should truly mean to us.
Ecclesiastes 3:1 NKJV
To everything there is a season, A time for every purpose under heaven:
• God has a time and a purpose for everything he does
• God memorializes things and he wants you to also
• And He does things so that you will remember his greatness, his mercy, his providence
• In a large part, that is what Sundays should be about
• Your time with your friends - talking about the goodness of God and what He’s done in your life

The Three Jewish Feasts

• God demonstrated this with 3 annual festivals that he instructed the Hebrews - HIS children - to celebrate each year
Feast of Unleavened Bread - Passover
Feast of Weeks - Pentecost - today known as Shavaut to the Jews
• First harvest
Feast of Ingathering - Tabernacles - today known at Sukkot to the Jews
• Final harvest
• The significance of these feasts - 2 of them in particular for today - ties in to and really emphasizes WHY God chose to give the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost and why the Holy Spirit is so essential to our walk as children of God.

Background

• God brings them out through unblemished lamb
• No leaven in their bread
• God has brought them out of slavery
• They’re in the wilderness
• Moses goes up the mountain to get the 10 commandments
• Golden calf, God determines to wipe them out - does kill 3000
• Moses intercedes

Blank

• Moses goes back up the mountain, this time with tablets he had to carve
• “Can’t go into this land without you”
• God is setting them apart as His children, His chosen possession
• He’s delivered them from slavery, now He is telling Moses how they must live to have Him go with them
Exodus 34:10–11 NLT
The Lord replied, “Listen, I am making a covenant with you in the presence of all your people. I will perform miracles that have never been performed anywhere in all the earth or in any nation. And all the people around you will see the power of the Lord—the awesome power I will display for you. But listen carefully to everything I command you today. Then I will go ahead of you and drive out the Amorites, Canaanites, Hittites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites.
• Don’t make treaties
• Worship no other Gods
• I’m going to do all of this and I want you to memorialize it in this manner
• (learn to remember, and lift up EVERYTHING God has done for you)
• tells him they must celebrate these feasts every year
• And promises this:
Exodus 34:23–24 NLT
Three times each year every man in Israel must appear before the Sovereign, the Lord, the God of Israel. I will drive out the other nations ahead of you and expand your territory, so no one will covet and conquer your land while you appear before the Lord your God three times each year.

Feast of Unleavened Bread/Passover

Exodus 34:18 NLT
“You must celebrate the Festival of Unleavened Bread. For seven days the bread you eat must be made without yeast, just as I commanded you. Celebrate this festival annually at the appointed time in early spring, in the month of Abib, for that is the anniversary of your departure from Egypt.
• Instituted in Exo 12 just before the first passover happened
• Passover represented:
God exercising His power to deliver from slavery
• oppression
• repesents sin
• Freedom from the bonds of death
• knew they would die while captive to the Egyptians
• die in the bonds of sin

Feast of Weeks/Pentecost

Exodus 23:16 NKJV
and the Feast of Harvest, the firstfruits of your labors which you have sown in the field; and the Feast of Ingathering at the end of the year, when you have gathered in the fruit of your labors from the field.
• Represented
God’s covenant to personally go with them to drive their enemies from the land He promised to give them
• They were orphans
• no homes, no land - had never had a land of their own since God called Abraham
• slavery for 430 years
• still in the wilderness, living in tents, eating manna a quail BECAUSE they had no land to plant or harvest
• Eventually came to memorialize the giving of the law (God choosing them as his)

Feast of Ingathering/Tabernacles

Exodus 23:16 NKJV
and the Feast of Harvest, the firstfruits of your labors which you have sown in the field; and the Feast of Ingathering at the end of the year, when you have gathered in the fruit of your labors from the field.
• Represented:
God’s covenant to give them rest in homes they did not build
• End of harvest is a time of rest
• Why it was ultimately called the Feast of Tabernacles - to remember when they lived in tents in wilderness
Deuteronomy 6:10–12 NLT
“The Lord your God will soon bring you into the land he swore to give you when he made a vow to your ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. It is a land with large, prosperous cities that you did not build. The houses will be richly stocked with goods you did not produce. You will draw water from cisterns you did not dig, and you will eat from vineyards and olive trees you did not plant. When you have eaten your fill in this land, be careful not to forget the Lord, who rescued you from slavery in the land of Egypt.

What the Feasts Mean to Us Today

• Deal with the 1st and 3rd ones first:
1 Corinthians 5:7–8 NKJV
Therefore purge out the old leaven, that you may be a new lump, since you truly are unleavened. For indeed Christ, our Passover, was sacrificed for us. Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, nor with the leaven of malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.
Jesus is our Passover
• God excercising His power to do what we could not do - free us from the bondage of sin
• Unblemished lamb
• Brought out
• Resurrection represents new life with God

Tabernacles

John 14:2 NKJV
In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.
God’s promise of heaven for His children.
• Houses we didn’t build
• Cities we didn’t create
• Provision we didn’t work for
• But in between Passover and Tabernacles is the life we live here on this earth
• Just like the Hebrew children had to make a journey and take the land, we must do the same
• Dangers to navigate, enemies to conquer
• Spiritual enemies that must be cleared out so that we can plant and harvest

Pentecost

Romans 8:8–9 NLT
That’s why those who are still under the control of their sinful nature can never please God. But you are not controlled by your sinful nature. You are controlled by the Spirit if you have the Spirit of God living in you. (And remember that those who do not have the Spirit of Christ living in them do not belong to him at all.)
God coming personally to clear your spiritual enemies from the land He has promised to you.
• You don’t have the power
• You don’t have the knowledge
• And honestly, without the infilling of the Spirit, you will not accomplish it
• Not just spiritual - this property,
