Sold-Out Sold-Out Michael Morse / General CrossFit / A Disciple; Follow Christ; Submission; Obedience / Luke 5:1-11 Introduction 1. To get fit requires commitment a. You must commit to an exercise routine b. You must commit to a diet that leads you to your goals c. You commit to arrange your life to support your goal of getting fit i. You have to be Sold-Out to getting fit in order to 2. Luke this morning brings us to the time where Jesus begins to call His disciples. a. A disciple is a follower of i. The name Christian - means follower of Christ ii. It is impossible to be a Christian without being a follower of Christ iii. This morning as we look at the call to discipleship I want us to be challenged to know that to be a disciple of Christ is to be Sold Out to Christ completely and totally b. The first disciples are fishermen and Luke brings us to them as they are washing their nets i. Nets must be washed and stretched to remain useful 1. If it wasnt washed with fresh water and stretched it would rot ii. Notice these nets will have a similarity to us 1. The nets are first cleaned and readied and then they were used completely at the will of Christ a. At following Christ they were used beyond their capacity 2. We like the nets are to be used to catch fish a. We must first be washed with the water of the word b. Stretched by the Spirit as we seek to follow Christ c. We must have both washing in the Word and Stretched in following - this is why we must be sold out completely 3. What does it mean to be sold-out to Christ as His disciple? a. Lets read and look at 6 ways or areas in our life we must be sold out to Christ as His disciples › SLIDE Luke 5:1-3 CSB 1 As the crowd was pressing in on Jesus to hear God's word, he was standing by Lake Gennesaret. 2 He saw two boats at the edge of the lake; the fishermen had left them and were washing their nets. 3 He got into one of the boats, which belonged to Simon, and asked him to put out a little from the land. Then he sat down and was teaching the crowds from the boat. › SLIDE Luke 5:4-6 CSB 4 When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, "Put out into deep water and let down your nets for a catch." 5 "Master," Simon replied, "we've worked hard all night long and caught nothing. But if you say so, I'll let down the nets." 6 When they did this, they caught a great number of fish, and their nets began to tear. › SLIDE Luke 5:7-9 CSB 7 So they signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them; they came and filled both boats so full that they began to sink. 8 When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus's knees and said, "Go away from me, because I'm a sinful man, Lord!" 9 For he and all those with him were amazed at the catch of fish they had taken, › SLIDE Luke 5:10-11 CSB 10 and so were James and John, Zebedee's sons, who were Simon's partners. "Don't be afraid," Jesus told Simon. "From now on you will be catching people." 11 Then they brought the boats to land, left everything, and followed him. › SLIDE Circumstance › SLIDE Luke 5:1-3 CSB 1 As the crowd was pressing in on Jesus to hear God's word, he was standing by Lake Gennesaret. 2 He saw two boats at the edge of the lake; the fishermen had left them and were washing their nets. 3 He got into one of the boats, which belonged to Simon, and asked him to put out a little from the land. Then he sat down and was teaching the crowds from the boat. 1. Jesus desired to teach the people but was being jostled about a. The crowd was pressing Him to hear, possibly to touch Him and see if they too could be healed b. This situation was not conducive to sharing His word and teaching the people 2. Jesus was not teaching in the synagogue a. He was at the Lake Gennesaret i. AKA Sea of Galilee ii. AKA Sea of Tiberias iii. AKA Chenneroth b. He noticed two boats i. They were not being used and were sitting idly ii. The fishermen were over washing their nets preparing them for the next expedition 3. Jesus got into one of the boats a. It was Simon's boat and He asked Simon to put out a bit from the shore b. As He was out from the shore a bit Jesus could now teach i. He wouldnt be pushed around or disturbed ii. The people should be able to hear better as the water provided awesome acoustics iii. Jesus sat down and was teaching the crowds from the boat 4. In order for Jesus word to be taught Simon was called upon within his circumstances a. Jesus wanted His word to go forth outside the synagogue b. Jesus called upon Simon while he was busy with other things c. Jesus asked to use Simons resources and time as well › SLIDE To spread His word Jesus calls on His disciples within their circumstances i. Simon had plenty of excuses for the Lord to not use Him 1. He had been working all night and was tired 2. It wasnt even Sabbath and they werent in the synagogue 3. He didnt want to mix business with his religion ii. Simon didnt make excuses He was Sold Out for Jesus and so he was available in his circumstance to Jesus as He wanted or needed. › SLIDE To be Sold-Out for Jesus we must make ourselves available in our circumstances - time, place, day, energy, resources, etc › SLIDE Security › SLIDE Luke 5:4 CSB 4 When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, "Put out into deep water and let down your nets for a catch." 1. Jesus then calls Simon to the deep water a. He had just finished teaching the crowds and was alone with Simon in the boat i. He called Simon alone as He was with Jesus b. This is the second time He asked Simon to "put out" i. The first was just a little off shore - probably could stand in the water with feet touching the ground ii. This time He called Him out to deep water 1. You cannot see beneath you and you cannot feel the ground beneath you in deep water 2. Anything can happen while in deep water 2. Jesus says in deep water let your nets down for a catch a. It was not the time of day for going out to the deep b. Simon was exhausted from working all night i. Jesus was calling Him to leave security and safety of the shore ii. Jesus after teaching His Word called Simon to deeper waters - called Him out to the deep faith 3. In order to have a catch Simon must go out to deep waters a. Jesus is telling Simon to leave safety security and to spread his nets for a catch b. There is no catch if you arent willing to head to deep waters - Jesus of course is using an object lesson here - real life for Simon but for us its about Faith › SLIDE Jesus calls His disciples to the deep waters for the "catch" i. Walking in faith requires us to go into deep waters ii. Some of the deep waters of faith that require us to be sold out in Security 1. Some great miracles and ministry happens when we abandon safety and security 2. Suffering, sorrow and loss 3. Trials and tragedies iii. We must remember Jesus starts us out at the shore and then a little out and then deep water 1. Sometimes we expect the deep without first trusting the Lord a little a. Deep ministry has great rewards but requires launching out in shallow waters first › SLIDE Zechariah 4:10 "For who despises the day of small things..." › SLIDE To be Sold Out for Jesus we must leave safety and security and follow His lead in faith › SLIDE Obedience › SLIDE Luke 5:5 CSB 5 "Master," Simon replied, "we've worked hard all night long and caught nothing. But if you say so, I'll let down the nets." 1. Jesus request is in conflict with Simon's experience and knowledge a. His experience tells him that the fish are not caught in the deep in the daylight i. His recent experience says that the fish are not going to be caught that day - they spent all night trying to catch them in the best of circumstances b. His knowledge tells him he knows fishing better than Jesus - who was a carpenter 2. Simon however obeys Jesus command a. He calls Jesus "Master" which is a term of respect and not lordship i. If you say... then I will.... 1. This is the statement of one who has the attitude of obedience and surrender to His leading › SLIDE Jesus wants to do a work but He requires His disciples to obey His voice i. Simon didnt obey Jesus because it made sense he obeyed Jesus because he believed in Jesus ii. The Master's word must take precedence over our experience, expertise and knowledge iii. Just because it doesnt make sense doesnt mean we dont have to obey › SLIDE Luke 6:46 CSB 46 "Why do you call me 'Lord, Lord,' and don't do the things I say? › SLIDE To be Sold Out for Jesus we must obey His command › SLIDE Teamwork › SLIDE Luke 5:6-7 CSB 6 When they did this, they caught a great number of fish, and their nets began to tear. 7 So they signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them; they came and filled both boats so full that they began to sink. 1. As Simon followed Jesus command and obeyed His word - the fruit was amazing a. The catch was larger than anything he had experienced, hoped, or expected b. This brought a problem though - it was just Jesus and Simon in the boat and the net was tearing i. Simon could continue what he is doing 1. the net may fully break losing the catch 2. the net might break enough where he may lose some of the fish ii. Simon could get help and work together 1. The nets will stretch with the catch and not break saving the entire catch 2. Simon signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help a. They came and they filled both boats b. So full the boats themselves were sinking! i. As they came to help they lost nothing of the catch and there was enough to sink two boats ii. This was because they worked as a team 3. In order to haul in the catch Jesus disciples must use teamwork a. Simon knew the catch was more than he could handle so he called for help i. He needed to ask for help - his partners must be ready to help - it requires us both working as a team together b. Simon had business partners - James and John Zebedee and we have the body of Christ › SLIDE - Adam Clarke Some will rather leave souls to perish than admit partners in the sacred work. It is an intolerable pride to think nothing done well but what we do ourselves; and a diabolic envy to be afraid lest others should be more successful than we are. i. We must realize we are not called to do everything in ministry and to try actually hurts the ministry more than helps it ii. We must also realize our best for something is not necessarily the best that God has for that - perhaps He has someone else who is best? 1. We must be always raising up our replacement and encouraging others to go further and do more than we can - have more faith and put out to deeper waters 2. Leaders must be delegating and discipling 3. We must understand that we are all one body and work together › SLIDE 1 Corinthians 12:12-14 CSB 12 For just as the body is one and has many parts, and all the parts of that body, though many, are one body-so also is Christ. 13 For we were all baptized by one Spirit into one body-whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free-and we were all given one Spirit to drink. 14 Indeed, the body is not one part but many. › SLIDE Sold-Out for Jesus means teamwork › SLIDE Humility › SLIDE Luke 5:8-9 CSB 8 When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus's knees and said, "Go away from me, because I'm a sinful man, Lord!" 9 For he and all those with him were amazed at the catch of fish they had taken, 1. Now we have the dual person Simon Peter a. Before Jesus and after Jesus - Simon before Peter after i. Seeing the miracle of Jesus and understanding we also see Simon Peter go from calling Jesus Master or Epistata - to Lord or Kyrios b. Simon understands who he stands before now and is like the prophet Isaiah › SLIDE Isaiah 6:5 CSB 5 Then I said: Woe is me for I am ruined because I am a man of unclean lips and live among a people of unclean lips, and because my eyes have seen the King, the LORD of Armies. i. Peter says Go away from me Lord because I am a sinful man 2. The amazement opened their eyes to who Jesus was not to what they could get from Him a. There are some who become followers because of things done for them b. Others become followers because they realize who they are following and being around them is enough i. Simon realized that this happened because of the Lord - not HIm 1. He was only a man 2. He was sinful 3. Jesus was Lord ii. Success was not about Simon Peter deserving to be used but about the Lord desiring to use 3. Jesus will only use those who are humble in ministry a. Peter didnt say arent you glad you used me a fisherman - Peter knew it was all Jesus - and if it werent him it would have been someone else used b. Peter wasnt deserving but he was sold out for Jesus c. May we never approach ministry thinking we deserve one thing or dont deserve another › SLIDE Will success humble us or puff us up? › SLIDE Sold Out for Jesus is humility to see success in ministry as Gods goodness to sinners like us › SLIDE Livelihood › SLIDE Luke 5:10-11 CSB 10 and so were James and John, Zebedee's sons, who were Simon's partners. "Don't be afraid," Jesus told Simon. "From now on you will be catching people." 11 Then they brought the boats to land, left everything, and followed him. 1. Jesus says something now to Simon a. Dont be afraid - phobeo i. Either Jesus is referring to Simon's response to the miracle ii. Or Jesus is saying dont be afraid of what I am telling you next or of what is coming next b. From now on you will be catching people i. Jesus says that now they will be cease being fishermen and will thus become fishers of men ii. Catch has a more deeper meaning in the Greek - this word means to catch alive 1. Fishermen usually catch fish to kill so they could eat or make a living 2. Jesus is saying to Simon - you will be catching men alive - dead men will live 2. They then respond to Jesus words a. Jesus told Simon but this verse here tells us all of them were included i. Andrew ii. James iii. John b. They brought the boats ashore i. The boats still filled with fish - their largest catch ever (at least ever recorded in the Gospels) c. They left everything i. Their catch ii. Their boats iii. Their business iv. Their family d. Followed Jesus 3. Jesus told them fear not - I am asking you to forsake all and follow me a. You will catch men - like the fish you caught b. It will be just as successful - I am with you › SLIDE Matthew 19:29 CSB 29 And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or fields because of my name will receive a hundred times more and will inherit eternal life. c. Jesus said let me take control of your livelihood - follow me › SLIDE Jesus calls His disciples to trust Him completely with their livelihood i. How you run your business ii. What you do for work iii. Your promotions iv. Your calling › SLIDE Sold Out for Jesus means trusting Him implicitly in our livelihoods i. Jesus must become everything to you - He must be your desire above all else › SLIDE - dung rubbish refuse garbage Philippians 3:7-8 CSB 7 But everything that was a gain to me, I have considered to be a loss because of Christ. 8 More than that, I also consider everything to be a loss in view of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. Because of him I have suffered the loss of all things and consider them as dung, so that I may gain Christ Conclusion Jesus calls us to come to Him all who are weary and heavy laden -> then Jesus tells His disciples go therefore and make disciples of all nations › SLIDE From salvation to ministry - the call of the disciple of Jesus Christ - fishers of men In order to be a disciple for Christ we must be sold out to Him in everything. Commitment to Jesus is radical and discipleship is demanding but rewarding John here leaving everything to follow Jesus was believed to be somewhere in his teenage years - He lived his whole life as a disciple for Jesus To begin your discipleship with Jesus requires you to be a believer in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior Page .
