#61 – The Spirit in You Series

Text: John 16:5-7

Introduction

1. Jesus will _____________ the Holy Spirit... (16:5-7)

Word Study: Parakletos, Paraclete, Parakaleo, (para–alongside of; kaleo–call) to comfort, exhort or encourage. The idea is aid of any kind. In the Greek writers, it was used of a legal advisor, pleader, proxy, or advocate, one who comes forward in behalf of and as the representative of another. So in 1Jn.2:1, Christ is termed our substitutionary, intercessory advocate. Christ designates the Holy Spirit as Paraclete (John 14:16), and calls Him állos, another, which means another of equal quality. Therefore, the Holy Spirit is designated by Jesus Christ as equal with Himself, i.e., God (1Jn.2:1). This new Paraclete, the Holy Spirit, was to witness concerning Jesus Christ (Jo.14:26; 16:7,14) and to glorify Him. The Holy Spirit is called a Paraclete because He undertakes Christ's office in the world while Christ is not in the world as the God-Man in bodily form. In addition, the Holy Spirit is also called the Paraclete because He acts as Christ's substitute on earth. When Christ in Jo.14:16 designates Himself as a Paraclete, the same as the Holy Spirit, the word must not be understood as applying to Christ in the same sense as in 1Jn.2:1 where it refers to our substitutionary Advocate who pleads our cause with the Father. It should rather be taken as He who pleads God's cause with us (Jo.16:15).

Person of the Spirit: The Holy Spirit is equal with God the Father and Son, 3 Persons, 1 God – cohabiting eternity with their glory and grace. Each have differing influences and impacts in their particular responsibilities but they are all united and equal with each other. The Extent of the Trinity is beyond our ability to completely understand or comprehend but it is an essential truth for all believers and Children of God. He is attested by the Word to be God and referred to as Yahweh (Ac.5:1–4; Isa.6:8–9 with Ac.28:25; Jer.31:31–34 with He.10:15). He possesses the attributes of God such as omniscience, omni-presence, omnipotence and eternality. (1Cor.2:10–11; Ps.139:7; Zech.4:6; He.9:14). He is equally linked in the Trinity (Matt.28:19, 20; 2Cor.13:14)

Work of the Spirit: The HS teaches, guides, comforts, and intercedes (Jo.14:26; Ro.8:14; Jo.14:26; Ro.8:26); He possess emotion, intellect, and will (Eph.4:30; 1Cor.2:10–14; 1Cor.12:11); He plays a major role in salvation and sanctification of the believer by convicting the unbeliever of truth and causing him to see the light of the Gospel (Jo,16:8–11); He regenerates then gives faith and repentance to the sinner (Jo.3:3-7; Eph.2:8,9; 2Tim.2:25); He unites the believer with Christ placing him in the Church (1Cor.12:13) and enabling him to overcome sin (Ro.6:1–10); He leads the believer into all truth (Jo.16:13), transforms the believer into the image of Jesus Christ (2Co.3:18). He indwells, seals, and guarantees the security of the believer (1Cor.6:19,20; 2Cor.1:22; Eph.1:13; 4:3), sovereignly gifting the believer for good works (Ro.12; 1 Cor.12; Eph.4)
