Jesus is the only way we make it heaven, anything else is destructive and deception. Let us not hold to traditions for our answer, but seek first the Word and His commandments.

Introduction

Tell the story of the person in a jail cell
Read John 14:6 and Pray
Talk about stockholm syndrome
What it is:
“Over the course of time, some victims do come to develop positive feelings toward their captors. They may even begin to feel as if they share common goals and causes. The victim may begin to develop negative feelings toward the police or authorities. They may resent anyone who may be trying to help them escape from the dangerous situation they’re in.”
What are some symptoms:
The victim develops positive feelings toward the person holding them captive or abusing them.
The victim develops negative feelings toward police, authority figures, or anyone who might be trying to help them get away from their captor. They may even refuse to cooperate against their captor.
The victim begins to perceive their captor’s humanity and believe they have the same goals and values.
Talk about how Christians can find themselves in these situations with the Devil, not understanding that they are being enslaved and held hostage for his agenda and with complete disregard to their well-being.

Body

Read John 8: 31-36
Talk about the Jews and Jesus and how Jesus told them they were not Abraham’s descendants because if they were they would agree and hear the words He spoke about the Father
Talk about the Jubilee and the slaves and not abiding in the house forever
Read Deuteronomy 15:12
Talk about how we are not meant to be slaves, and while the devil may have a hold on us now, Jesus is setting us free from the bondage of the world. We must understand that we are worth more and to Him, He has atoned and paid for us. We must leave and understand that as we are going we are going to a better place, we are not going empty-handed either, but we are not to look back.
Read Exodus 1:8-14
The longer we stay in bondage of sin, the worse it becomes for us, all the while our stockholm syndrome keeping us from understanding the affliction is beause of our slavery, not because of God acting harshly and punishing us.
Read Exodus 16:1-3
If not careful we can begin to see our freedom as hopelessness. If we are not careful we can find ourselves making decisions and then blaming our disobedience, lack of faith or anxieties on the Lord as if He is punishing us.
If we are not careful, we will begin to remember only the benefits of our bondage and slavery and forgetting the trauma and danger, all the while, attributing our own short-comings to punishment from the Lord.
Talk about abiding in the word of Jesus

Conclusion

Come back to John 14:6
Jesus is the way, the truth and the life
The only way we will get to heaven is through Jesus
Talk about how it can be difficult to let go of traditions and thoughts that have been spoken for years from people we trust, however, if they do not line up with the word we are no better than the Jews Jesus spoke to in John 8
We must keep ourselves in the word and align our will with God’s will and make sure that we test ourselves, actions and thoughts against that which is in the word
Read and end with John 13:33-35
Let us spend time in the word and acting with the commandment that we are given.
This is how we will find and come to know Jesus and the Father deeper.
Jesus isn’t here. He is up preparing a place for us in heaven, however, He has left us everything we need to be ready for His eventual return
