9 Give therefore thy servant an understanding heart to judge thy people, that I may discern between good and bad: for who is able to judge this thy so great a people?

Pre-Sermon Ice Breaker

One Day a little girl was sitting and watching her mother do the dishes at the kitchen sink. She suddenly noticed that her mother had several strands of white hair sticking out in contrast to her brunette hair. She looked at her mother and inquisitively asked, “Why are some of your hairs white, Mom” Her mother replied, “Well, every time that you do something wrong and make me cry or unhappy, one of my hairs turns white.” The little girl thought about this revelation for a while and then said, “Momma, how come ALL of grandma’s hairs are white?”

Introduction

Our theme for the month of May has been prayer. On the first Sunday we explored a Recipe for prayer as we studied Philippians 4:6. Last Sunday we discussed how to get our prayers answered when we examined Jesus statement in John 15:7. Today we will look at another facet of prayer as we go to the Old Testament Book of 1 Kings and look at what King Solomon prayed for in a message entitled, “Wisdom.”
Wisdom is the ability to think and act using knowledge, experience, understanding, common sense and insight.
In sign language the sign for smart is made like this. If you are smart your brains are popping our of your head.
The sign for wise is almost the exact opposite, using an x hand you move across your forehead. If your smart your brains pop out, but if your wise, you push them back in.
James 1:5 KJV 1900
5 If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.
This is exactly what King Solomon did he asked God for wisdom. God answered
2 Chronicles 1:11–12 KJV 1900
11 And God said to Solomon, Because this was in thine heart, and thou hast not asked riches, wealth, or honour, nor the life of thine enemies, neither yet hast asked long life; but hast asked wisdom and knowledge for thyself, that thou mayest judge my people, over whom I have made thee king: 12 Wisdom and knowledge is granted unto thee; and I will give thee riches, and wealth, and honour, such as none of the kings have had that have been before thee, neither shall there any after thee have the like.
Like the books of Samuel, the books of Kings originally appeared as one volume. In 1 Kings 3:9 we see an example of prayer. This is a powerful example of prayer, humility and leadership.
President William Howard Taft, the only man to serve as both President and Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, placed his hand on 1 Kings 3:9-11 as he took the oath of office in 1909.
Three truths leap to our attention as we examine this verse, let’s look at them together.

Body

Wisdom Desired

1 Kings 3:9 KJV 1900
9 Give therefore thy servant an understanding heart to judge thy people, that I may discern between good and bad: for who is able to judge this thy so great a people?
Understanding = Shama (Shaw-mah)
Means literally a hearing heart.
Proverbs 2:6–7 KJV 1900
6 For the Lord giveth wisdom: Out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding. 7 He layeth up sound wisdom for the righteous: He is a buckler to them that walk uprightly.
Proverbs 4:5 KJV 1900
5 Get wisdom, get understanding: Forget it not; neither decline from the words of my mouth.

Wisdom Defined

1 Kings 3:9 KJV 1900
9 Give therefore thy servant an understanding heart to judge thy people, that I may discern between good and bad: for who is able to judge this thy so great a people?
Ezekiel 44:23 KJV 1900
23 And they shall teach my people the difference between the holy and profane, and cause them to discern between the unclean and the clean.
1 Corinthians 2:14–16 KJV 1900
14 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. 15 But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man. 16 For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ.
Philippians 2:5 KJV 1900
5 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:
Hebrews 5:14 KJV 1900
14 But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.

Wisdom Debated

1 Kings 3:9 KJV 1900
9 Give therefore thy servant an understanding heart to judge thy people, that I may discern between good and bad: for who is able to judge this thy so great a people?
1 Corinthians 1:24 KJV 1900
24 But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God.
Colossians 2:3 KJV 1900
3 In whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.
Isaiah 11:2 KJV 1900
2 And the spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him, The spirit of wisdom and understanding, The spirit of counsel and might, The spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord;

Conclusion

If you are looking for Wisdom, you need look no further than Christ.
Psalm 111:10 KJV 1900
10 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom: A good understanding have all they that do his commandments: His praise endureth for ever.
John 3:3 KJV 1900
3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
You should be born again,
You should pray.
