Why Preaching?

#2

1 Peter 3:10–15 KJV 1900
10 For he that will love life, and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips that they speak no guile: 11 Let him eschew evil, and do good; let him seek peace, and ensue it. 12 For the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and his ears are open unto their prayers: but the face of the Lord is against them that do evil. 13 And who is he that will harm you, if ye be followers of that which is good? 14 But and if ye suffer for righteousness’ sake, happy are ye: and be not afraid of their terror, neither be troubled; 15 But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear:
As we go through our Series on “Why?”, we will be addressing many different topics, but as we address each topic, the foundational premise for the series is found in:
1 Peter 3:15 KJV 1900
15 But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear:
This verse is broken out in two parts:
Sanctify the Lord God in your hearts
Be ready always to give an answer…of the hope that is in you...
Sanctify: Hagiazo -
consecrate, dedicate, reverence
to consecrate, to make holy, to sanctify,
Consecrate a place for God in your heart...
Dedicate, reverence God in your heart - Make God holy in your heart...
Give an answer - Apologia… apologetics is the branch of theology that deals with the defence of the faith...
we do not apologize for our faith, we are to be able to defend it...
If I am going to defend something, I have to understand it… theory...
Illustration: Before I went to college, I worked in a mechanic shop… I started pumping gas, worked in the parts store, and then began to work and help the mechanics...
The shop I worked at (though I didn’t know it at the time) had a parts changer mentality…
When I moved back to Indiana for college, I went to work at a shop, and the owner of this shop was not a parts changer… he would trouble shoot, figure out exactly what the problem was before he purchased any parts...
I learned so much from him, and I went from just changing out parts, to a mechanic...
But there was a leaning curve that had to take place, and I had to understand the systems I was working on if I was going to be able to figure it out...
Our faith is that way...
We start as children, just imitating those who are around us that are more mature and competent, but hopefully we will get to a place where we are able to stand on our own two feet...
1 Corinthians 2:14 KJV 1900
14 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.
1 Corinthians 3:1–3 KJV 1900
1 And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, even as unto babes in Christ. 2 I have fed you with milk, and not with meat: for hitherto ye were not able to bear it, neither yet now are ye able. 3 For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men?
Hebrews 5:11–14 KJV 1900
11 Of whom we have many things to say, and hard to be uttered, seeing ye are dull of hearing. 12 For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat. 13 For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe. 14 But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.
So, we need to be:
Sensitive (to hear) vs 11
Students (we should be teachers, but need to be students again so we can learn and then teach) vs 12
Skillful vs 13
Strong (senses exercised) vs14
Tonight, we are going to be looking at
Why Preaching?
Pray:
Why is it that in a day when:
Ted talks
Motivational, self-help speeches are the normal, why do we Preach???
And, what does it mean to Preach???
2 Timothy 4:1–5 KJV 1900
1 I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom; 2 Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine. 3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; 4 And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables. 5 But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry.
1st & 2nd Timothy and Titus are called the Pastoral Epistles
these 3 books are instructional books specifically dealing with the pastor, the church and the ministry of the church - the body of believers… Local NT
Here we find the charge of young Timothy - the pastor of the church at Ephesus.
His mentor - the Apostle Paul has invested in him, and taken him under his wing - teaching, training and even ordaining him...
The Apostle Paul decided to leave him at Ephesus to minister to the believers that were there...

5. Preaching is Pointed....
Preaching brings people to a decision -
6. Preaching IS NOT a Performance
It is not about the messenger but about the message...
It is not about the presentation, but about the presenting of truth...
Church, worship, preaching, invitations - these are not choreographed events...
We present truth in an attempt to:
Honor God and His Word
Ephesians 3:21 KJV 1900
21 Unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen.
Colossians 1:17–18 KJV 1900
17 And he is before all things, and by him all things consist. 18 And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence.
Help edify, exhort, equip and empower the believer
Acts 2:41–47 KJV 1900
41 Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls. 42 And they continued stedfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers. 43 And fear came upon every soul: and many wonders and signs were done by the apostles. 44 And all that believed were together, and had all things common; 45 And sold their possessions and goods, and parted them to all men, as every man had need. 46 And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart, 47 Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.
Acts 20:26–32 KJV 1900
26 Wherefore I take you to record this day, that I am pure from the blood of all men. 27 For I have not shunned to declare unto you all the counsel of God. 28 Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood. 29 For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock. 30 Also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them. 31 Therefore watch, and remember, that by the space of three years I ceased not to warn every one night and day with tears. 32 And now, brethren, I commend you to God, and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified.
Hebrews 13:7 KJV 1900
7 Remember them which have the rule over you, who have spoken unto you the word of God: whose faith follow, considering the end of their conversation.
