Disciple of Christ

This week we are talking about Philip, the disciple.
So we don’t know much about Philip, except that he came from Bethsaida in Galilee, the same place as Andrew and Peter.
We know that when Philip encountered Jesus in Galilee, Jesus said “Follow me,” and Philip did.
What’s most interesting about Philip, is the very next thing he does. You see Philip has this friend, Nathanael, in the other Gospels he’s called Bartholomew, and the very next thing we have recorded is that Philip found his friend and he said to him
John 1:45 ESV
Philip found Nathanael and said to him, “We have found him of whom Moses in the Law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.”
But Nathanael did not believe Philip at first. I mean, would you? Would you believe that the kid who grew up down the street, who you’d known your whole life, had just one day happened upon the Messiah, the savior, whom your people had been waiting for for generations? I probably wouldn’t.
John 1:46 ESV
Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see.”
Come, and see.
What greater gift could Philip have given Nathanael than to tell what he had found and invite Nathanael to come, and see for himself, the Messiah, the prince of Peace.
Who would you like to invite to come, and see?
WHAT are you inviting them to come and see? Is it inviting them to church? To youth group? To summer camp? Well, maybe, but I think it’s something more than that.
We aren’t called to go convince as many friends as we can to come to church, we are called to make as many people as we can into disciples of Jesus Christ.
Why do you believe in Jesus? How do you love others, love yourself better as a result of knowing Him?
These are the things we are supposed to invite our friends to come, and see. Not a church building or a youth event, but the tangible evidence of Jesus’ action in our own life.
So this week, I hope you’ll think about how you’ve come to know Jesus, what you’ve come to know about it, and you’ll invite others to come and see.
