Scripture tells us that we are a new creation in Christ. But what was wrong with the old self? Did we really need to be saved from ourselves?

Why do we hold on to old things?

lots of reasons
it is one thing to hold on to material things
it is another to hold onto the old way of life
Ephesians 4:17–24 ESV
Now this I say and testify in the Lord, that you must no longer walk as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their minds. They are darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, due to their hardness of heart. They have become callous and have given themselves up to sensuality, greedy to practice every kind of impurity. But that is not the way you learned Christ!— assuming that you have heard about him and were taught in him, as the truth is in Jesus, to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.
Discussion about Gentiles
usually means non Jewish
Paul is talking about the people being something new all together
then Paul begins the unpack the old life
Old Self
Futile minds
Understanding is darkened
Alienated from life because of ignorance
Hardness of heart
Calloused
Given to sensualitty
Greedy for every kind of impurity
This is the effect of sin in our lives; this is what we’ve been freed from
Sin lies to us
Causes pain until we can’t feel anymore
Clouds our minds so we can’t understand the things of God
Does it slowly, so when we realize it, we feel like its too late
When we’re saved, we often hold onto the old way
New Self
Renewed mind
in the likeness of God
true righteousness
holiness
Galatians 5:24 ESV
And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.
The old way is dead
the new self is enlightened
the new self can feel and comprehend love and compassion that comes from the Father
It frees our minds, frees our hearts, frees us from death
In the Spirit, there is freedom. The world tells us there freedom outside God’s teachings, but true freedom is found in the life giving Holy Spirit
