Why Can’t I Hear God Speak?

Hebrews 1:1–2 NASB95
God, after He spoke long ago to the fathers in the prophets in many portions and in many ways, in these last days has spoken to us in His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the world.
We Might Have Problems Hearing God Speak Because We Might Be:
I. UNAWARE of the METHODS God Uses To Speak To Us!
A. WORDS that are SPOKEN to us!
Genesis 1:3 NASB95
Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light.
Genesis 12:1 NASB95
Now the Lord said to Abram, “Go forth from your country, And from your relatives And from your father’s house, To the land which I will show you;
B. ANGELS that are SENT to us!
Genesis 16:7 NASB95
Now the angel of the Lord found her by a spring of water in the wilderness, by the spring on the way to Shur.
Genesis 28:12 NASB95
He had a dream, and behold, a ladder was set on the earth with its top reaching to heaven; and behold, the angels of God were ascending and descending on it.
C. CIRCUMSTANCES that are FACED by us!
Romans 8:28 NASB95
And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.
D. DREAMS that are REVEALED to us!
Daniel 2:3 NASB95
The king said to them, “I had a dream and my spirit is anxious to understand the dream.”
Daniel 2:19 NASB95
Then the mystery was revealed to Daniel in a night vision. Then Daniel blessed the God of heaven;
E. IMPRESSIONS that are DISCERNED by us!
Acts 7:23 NASB95
“But when he was approaching the age of forty, it entered his mind to visit his brethren, the sons of Israel.
Nehemiah 7:5 NASB95
Then my God put it into my heart to assemble the nobles, the officials and the people to be enrolled by genealogies. Then I found the book of the genealogy of those who came up first in which I found the following record:
Indeed God Speaks: But Why Can’t I Hear Him?
II. UNFAMILIAR with the MISTAKES we make when He speaks to us!
A. MEDIOCRITY in our LIFESTYLE!
1 Corinthians 10:31 NASB95
Whether, then, you eat or drink or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.
B. FAMILIARITY with our MESSENGERS!
Mark 6:2–5 NASB95
When the Sabbath came, He began to teach in the synagogue; and the many listeners were astonished, saying, “Where did this man get these things, and what is this wisdom given to Him, and such miracles as these performed by His hands? “Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, and brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon? Are not His sisters here with us?” And they took offense at Him. Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his hometown and among his own relatives and in his own household.” And He could do no miracle there except that He laid His hands on a few sick people and healed them.
C. WOUNDS from our PAST!
Proverbs 18:19 NASB95
A brother offended is harder to be won than a strong city, And contentions are like the bars of a citadel.
D. PRIDE in our HEARTS!
James 4:6 NASB95
But He gives a greater grace. Therefore it says, “God is opposed to the proud, but gives grace to the humble.”
E. TRADITIONS in our RELIGION!
Mark 7:8–9 NASB95
“Neglecting the commandment of God, you hold to the tradition of men.” He was also saying to them, “You are experts at setting aside the commandment of God in order to keep your tradition.
