A Mother’s Law
Family Sanctified Series
Proverbs 1:8-9
My son, hear the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother: For they shall be an ornament of grace unto thy head, and chains about thy neck.

What is the Law of thy mother?

The scriptures have a lot to say about the importance of a mother.
· Proverbs 31:25 KJV - Strength and honour are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come.
· Leviticus 19:3 KJV - Ye shall fear every man his mother, and his father, and keep my sabbaths: I am the Lord your God.
· Proverbs 20:20 KJV - Whoso curseth his father or his mother, his lamp shall be put out in obscure darkness.
In fact, Eve was received her name from her husband Adam because she was the “mother all living”. So, it is by design that a female should have this distinct position and tittle. To be a mother is a special gift from God. The lineage of a family and the strength of the children are dependent on her performing the duties of her office in an efficient and dutiful manner.
The early childhood development is the responsibility of the mother. The father is out doing the hunting and gathering, and a young child would be in harm’s way and greatly hinder the efforts of the father to support his family. The young child would then be in the constant companionship, and teachings of the mother from the moment they were born until the time that they could work in the fields. Even now the mother is the primary caretaker of the child until they are old enough to venture into the public school system.

But what is the Law of thy Mother?

Proverbs 31:25-28 KJV - Strength and honour are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come. She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness. She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness. Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her.
Kindness – to show oneself as being merciful, especially to those in shame or reproach, generous and considerate· The mother is representative and teachings of the GRACE of God in the family. The Law of Grace .
Providing for those who cannot provide for themselves
Is not lazy – does not need supervision
Gratitude

Mothers have a charge before God to pass on this Law:

Titus 2:3-5 KJV -The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things: That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children, To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed.
A mother is an example of holiness to teaches others:
To be sober
To love
Discretion
Goodness
Obedience
How to be an Example of Godliness
Proverbs 31:26 - She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness

What do we learn about God from our mothers?

2 Timothy 1:5 KJV - When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also.

God is our comforter

Isaiah 66:13 - As one whom his mother comforteth, so will I comfort you; and ye shall be comforted in Jerusalem.

God loves us and has compassion (kindness) for us

1 Corinthians 13:4-7 says: Love (charity) Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil; Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth; Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.
We learn these things that do not pass away from our mothers law. Be Kind, Be Gentle
Isaiah 49:15 KJV - Can a woman forget her sucking child, that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb? yea, they may forget, yet will I not forget thee.
We see here God asks, Is it possible for a woman to forget her child for another of her yet unborn children?
God then says that even if that were possible, he will not forget his children.

God Seeks us as a mother loves her children

Matthew 23:37 - O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!

The Grace of God in Jesus Christ

John 1:17 For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.
Romans 6:14 For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.

How do we honor our mothers?

Proverbs 23:22 - Hearken unto thy father that begat thee, and despise not thy mother when she is old.
Despise = loathe, hate, ignore so then we do not ignore our mother when she is old
She spent her life taking care of us.
So we do not hate her
We do not ignore her needs and care
We don’t make strangers take care of her, or ship her away for convenience
We don’t let her starve off her meager earnings, like the widow who gave 2 cents to the altar at the temple.
She cared for us when we could not care for ourselves, and so we care for her now
Proverbs 31:31 KJV - Give her of the fruit of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates.
She doesn’t come second, or last, but first in our lives – for she put aside her whole life for us
We praise her for what she had done, for her sacrifices and toils that she has committed to her family
We tell others of the greatness of her love and patience towards us
1 Peter 3:4 KJV - But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price.
We walk in the integrity that she raised us up in
We walk in humility without boasting on ourselves.
We walk in honor of God who gave us our mother
3 John 4 KJV - I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth.
· We bring her joy by walking in the truth of Jesus Christ that she taught us.
Deuteronomy 4:9 KJV - Only take heed to thyself, and keep thy soul diligently, lest thou forget the things which thine eyes have seen, and lest they depart from thy heart all the days of thy life: but teach them thy sons, and thy sons’ sons;
We teach what we have learned from her to our own children.
Proverbs 6:20-21 KJV - My son, keep thy father’s commandment, and forsake not the law of thy mother: Bind them continually upon thine heart, and tie them about thy neck.
We walk in the obedience of the Mother’s Law: Kindness
This is how we say Happy Mother’s Day every day we live
