The Enlightenment of the Word

Last Sunday we discussed how Jesus is the Eternal Word. That Jesus was from the beginning. A time before anything that was created, was created. That Jesus is not just this baby from the manger at Christmas time, but the eternal Son of God, Kings of kings, and Lord of lords.
This morning I want us to look at the Enlightenment of the Word incarnate through Jesus Christ.
John 1:4-18
What we find here is the Divine Declaration of the Word, (theos en ho logos).
This declaration spans throughout the Bible. The entire OT and NT, Jesus is here and is the word of God.
We find the declaration as Divine power, Divine wisdom, Divine revelation, Divine teaching, Divine sacrifice, and Divine standing!
Was the Word = 2nd person of the Trinity
Word was with God = face to face with the Father
Word was God = the declared Word of God; Jesus is God
In these verses we will see many wonderful attributes and truths, but for this morning I want to narrow it down to three.
The Enlightenment of the Word in Christ in three distinct areas.
Creation (vs.3)
Universe
Man
How can we understand?
John 2 explains....
Colossians 1:16 NASB95
16 For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things have been created through Him and for Him.
2. Revelation (vs. 14-18)
Incarnation
Matthew 1:1 NASB95
1 The record of the genealogy of Jesus the Messiah, the son of David, the son of Abraham:
Deuteronomy 18:15 NASB95
15 “The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you, from your countrymen, you shall listen to him.
Acts 3:22–23 NASB95
22 “Moses said, ‘The Lord God will raise up for you a prophet like me from your brethren; to Him you shall give heed to everything He says to you. 23 ‘And it will be that every soul that does not heed that prophet shall be utterly destroyed from among the people.’
Isaiah 7:14 NASB95
14 “Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, a virgin will be with child and bear a son, and she will call His name Immanuel.
Isaiah 9:6 NASB95
6 For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; And the government will rest on His shoulders; And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.
Malachi 4:5 NASB95
5 “Behold, I am going to send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and terrible day of the Lord.
Micah 5:2 NASB95
2 “But as for you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, Too little to be among the clans of Judah, From you One will go forth for Me to be ruler in Israel. His goings forth are from long ago, From the days of eternity.”
Then here in John vs. 14a.
This is the Doctrine of the Incarnation, the virgin birth. A doctrine that must be believed and confessed by the person of the faith.
Matthew 1:18 NASB95
18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: when His mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child by the Holy Spirit.
Description of Jesus in human flesh:
Jesus had a human body
Jesus had a human mind
Jesus had a human soul and emotions (John 12:27; 13:21; Matt. 26:38)
People recognized Him as a human
Sinless
Deity
Was this coming of jesus necessary? Yes!
Representation of Obedience
To be our example in life to follow Him
To proclaim righteousness
To be the Penal Substitution
To be the mediator between man and God
To fulfill God’s plan of man ruling and subduing the earth
To be the first fruits of the redeemed
To be our High Priest
Yet, all these truths are looked at as false today, as it was back in the time of Jesus. Most Americans believe in the virgin birth but do not believe Jesus was sinless. It does not go both ways. You either believe in both or none. There is no split.
b. Explanation (vs. 18)
How did Jesus explain God the Father?
In Authority
Miracles
Healing’s
Power (sea, bread, life)
In Clarity
Use of the OT
Explaining what God demands
Grace and Truth (vs. 14, 16, 17)
In Necessity
Romans 3:23 NASB95
23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
c. Realization (vs. 17)
Grace
Grace is defined subjectively, the undeserved acceptance and love given by God to those He calls. An undeserved favor from God providing salvation for those who are deserving His wrath and ultimate condemnation.
Ephesians 2:8 NASB95
8 For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God;
Ephesians 2:5 NASB95
5 even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved),
Titus 3:7 NASB95
7 so that being justified by His grace we would be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.
Truth
Matthew 4:4 NASB95
4 But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.’ ”
Religion was binding people
Pharisees were binding people
The Law was binding people
Therefore, Jesus came to preach truth, the word of God, to set people free!
John 8:32 NASB95
32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.”
Free from what?
Religion
Isaiah 1:10-16 (BIBLE)
False Teachers
John 7:51-52 (BIBLE)....”blind guides” (Matt. 23:24)
Sin
Idolatry
Condemnation
Impending wrath of God
3. Salvation (vs. 4-13)
Acts 4:12 NASB95
12 “And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved.”
Life (vs. 4)
John 5:24 NASB95
24 “Truly, truly, I say to you, he who hears My word, and believes Him who sent Me, has eternal life, and does not come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life.
John 11:25 NASB95
25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in Me will live even if he dies,
1 John 5:11 NASB95
11 And the testimony is this, that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son.
Jesus is the source of life, spiritual life
Hebrews 5:9 NASB95
9 And having been made perfect, He became to all those who obey Him the source of eternal salvation,
Light (vs. 4-9)
Look at vs. 9....”enlightens every man”
This means to become illuminated. To expose. To bring evident.
a. His glory
b. His truth
c. Man’s position
d. To enlighten a spiritual void
c. The Light of the world
John 8:12 NASB95
12 Then Jesus again spoke to them, saying, “I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life.”
Ephesians 5:8–10 NASB95
8 for you were formerly darkness, but now you are Light in the Lord; walk as children of Light 9 (for the fruit of the Light consists in all goodness and righteousness and truth), 10 trying to learn what is pleasing to the Lord.
We are to be light as well...
Matthew 5:14 NASB95
14 “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden;
We are to expose those in darkness...
Ephesians 5:11 NASB95
11 Do not participate in the unfruitful deeds of darkness, but instead even expose them;
We are to learn in the Light...
Psalm 119:105 NASB95
105 Your word is a lamp to my feet And a light to my path.
The church is to be light...
Matthew 6:22 NASB95
22 “The eye is the lamp of the body; so then if your eye is clear, your whole body will be full of light.
We are to spread the light....
John 12:35 NASB95
35 So Jesus said to them, “For a little while longer the Light is among you. Walk while you have the Light, so that darkness will not overtake you; he who walks in the darkness does not know where he goes.
Rejection (vs. 10, 11)
Those who reject Jesus
Is denied to the Father
Is given over to a depraved mindset
Continues in sin
Is a liar
Is forever dead
Will be judged
Will be condemned
Is forever in torment
Impossible to be renewed
Look with me at Luke 16:19-31
Reception (vs. 12, 13) Acts 17:31
Sin erased
Psalm 103:12 NASB95
12 As far as the east is from the west, So far has He removed our transgressions from us.
Isaiah 38:17 NASB95
17 “Lo, for my own welfare I had great bitterness; It is You who has kept my soul from the pit of nothingness, For You have cast all my sins behind Your back.
Isaiah 43:25 NASB95
25 “I, even I, am the one who wipes out your transgressions for My own sake, And I will not remember your sins.
Isaiah 55:7 NASB95
7 Let the wicked forsake his way And the unrighteous man his thoughts; And let him return to the Lord, And He will have compassion on him, And to our God, For He will abundantly pardon.
Children of God; heirs; heaven; in the presence of God; home...
So, who is Jesus?
