The Holy Spirit and rebirth

Born from above

Doxology Hymn no 23:            “Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of Hosts!” (repeat + “AMEN”)

Call to worship

Bible Verse

The earth is the LORD’s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it; for he founded it upon the seas and established it upon the waters. (Psalm 24:1-2)

Minister:  Grace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Congregation:  Amen.

Prayer of Adoration and Confession

Lord’s Prayer (said)

Declaration of pardoning

Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has gone through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet was without sin. Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need. (Hebrews 4:14-16)

Sermon:                         “The Holy Spirit and rebirth”

n  8  “Born-again” Christians?

–      A sect of weird Christians?

n  8 Two misconceptions:

–      Repentance = being born again

n  Born again is a command

–      8  All “Christians” will go to heaven

n  Just try your best!

n  8 Natural birth

–      An act of God

–      All are born the same way

–      All are born in sin

n  8 Birth from above (John 1:10-13)

–      Not natural descent

–      Not human decision

–      Not a husband’s will

–      Born of God

n  8 Flesh gives birth to flesh

–      (John 3:6)

n  The Spirit gives birth to spirit

–      (John 3:6)

n  8 The mind of sinful man is death

–      Rom 8:7

n  The mind controlled by the Spirit is life and peace

–      Rom 8:7

n  8  No ruler of this age understands God’s wisdom

–      1Cor 2:8

None of the rulers of this age understood it, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. (1 Corinthians 2:8)

n  God’s wisdom is revealed to us by his Spirit

–      1 Cor 2:10

God has revealed it to us by his Spirit. The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. (1 Corinthians 2:10)

n  8 Jesus said to Nicodemus

–      “How will you believe if I speak heavenly things?” (John 3:12)

–      8 We need a Spiritual birth in order to believe heavenly things

8 The Holy Spirit is given

–      We now understand God’s gift

–      Without the Spirit we cannot accept God’s gift

–      We can only discern God’s way in a spiritual way - by the Spirit.

–      Spiritual birth is necessary

n  8 How are we born again?

–      The wind blows where it pleases God

–      8 The Spirit works where it pleases God (John 3:8)

–      8 The Holy Spirit brings new birth

Born from “above”  (John 3:5)

n  8 To be born again

–      It is a must - but it is not a command

–      8 It not a command - it is a fact

–      8 It is a must - if not, we cannot enter into the Kingdom of God

n  8 The Holy Spirit gives new birth

–      By grace

–      8 By the Gospel call

–      8 Applying the work of Christ to our hearts (John 16:12-13)

“I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. (John 16:12-13)

–      8 He testifies with our Spirit that we are children of God (Rom 8:16)

Hymn No 276:                            “Breathe on me, Breath of God”

The LORD bless you and keep you;

the LORD make his face shine upon you and be gracious to you;

the LORD turn his face toward you and give you peace. (Numbers 6:24-26)

Threefold “Amen”
