Give Me Your Eyes
Mark 6:53-56
Introduction:
I have a confession to make.
I love my wife.
I will do anything for her (well, almost anything—I don’t like carrying her purse).
I love my church family.
I will also do almost anything for you.
Can I tell you something else?
I have the most wonderful wife.
I also am privileged to pastor the most wonderful church on Earth.
Through the eyes of love we see no faults.
How many of uttered or heard, “My child would never do anything like that”?
You see love is not just something that you say, it is something that you show.
Jesus said, “They will know that you are my disciples by your love for one another.”
We as Christians are to see through the eyes of love.
That is how Jesus saw.
We see many times in the gospels, Jesus responding to people through love.
Because Jesus loved, He healed.
Because Jesus loved, He brought back to life.
Because Jesus loved, He died on the Cross of Calvary.
Who did Jesus love?
He certainly loved His disciples.
He loved His family.
He loved His followers.
He even loved those that would condemn Him to a criminal’s death.
He would even go further and love those that drove the nails.
He showed that love by praying “Father forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.”
Do you have that kind of love?
It is easy to love the nice, the near, but what about those that are different from you and me?
We say that we love the lost, but do we show it?
Do we see this world through our eyes, or the eyes of Jesus Christ?
My friend we need to make the message of the song that Michael sang so wonderfully this morning the prayer of our hearts.
Our church depends upon it, and so does the world.
Let’s pray, “Father, give us your eyes!”
This morning as we conclude our Sent to Serve series through the Gospel of Mark, we find the recording of what some of the results of what Jesus had done up to the this time.
As the disciples dock in the region of Gennesaret, crowds recognize Jesus.
These crowds had received the eyes of Christ.
Let’s look at three things that show their love for humanity.
1.
The people knew the reputation of CHRIST
The disciples docked on the other side of the Sea of Galilee.
This was Jesus’ former stomping grounds.
He was from Nazareth.
Gennesaret is a fertile area on the coast of the western side of the Sea of Galilee, southeast of Nazareth.
Remember it was there that we began chapter 6. Jesus was rejected in His home town and He was able to heal a few people.
Here again, we find Jesus bringing a healing touch to a world that needed Him.
The people that were around the shores recognized who it was that came to town.
The reputation of Jesus Christ had preceded Him.
Everywhere that He went, people flocked to Him.
Many became followers of Him.
Many others would reject the teachings.
Jesus had a reputation of meeting people where they were
Jesus had a reputation for doing something about problems that were brought to Him
Jesus had a reputation for pointing others to the Father

The people showed great CONCERN
Not only did the town’s people know who Jesus was, they knew that He was able to do something for their friends.
Notice what Mark records for us.
They went throughout the region, in town, out of town, downtown, uptown.
Everywhere they went they were concerned enough for other people that they wanted to bring them to Jesus.
The people gathered at the “market places.”
This was the center of activity for a town.
It was a gathering place where legal proceedings would take place.
It is similar to our old town squares.
Many of those who were brought there were doubtless ones that were not suppose to be there.
They were the “unclean” ones.
But those are exactly the ones that Jesus needed to come to touch.
Remember Jesus’ words from earlier in Mark 2:17: "Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick.
I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance.”

The people saw Jesus moved with COMPASSION
| Matt 14:14 | And when Jesus went out He saw a great multitude; and He was moved with compassion for them, and healed their sick.

| Matt 15:32 | Now Jesus called His disciples to Himself and said, “I have compassion on the multitude, because they have now continued with Me three days and have nothing to eat.
And I do not want to send them away hungry, lest they faint on the way.”

| Matt 20:34 | So Jesus had compassion and touched their eyes.
And immediately their eyes received sight, and they followed Him.

| Mark 1:41 | Then Jesus, moved with compassion, stretched out His hand and touched him, and said to him, “I am willing; be cleansed.”

| Mark 5:19 | However, Jesus did not permit him, but said to him, “Go home to your friends, and tell them what great things the Lord has done for you, and how He has had compassion on you.”

| Mark 6:34 | And Jesus, when He came out, saw a great multitude and was moved with compassion for them, because they were like sheep not having a shepherd.
So He began to teach them many things.

Compassion brings us to minister to people who are sick
Compassion brings us to minister to people who are in need
Compassion brings us to minster to people who are hungry for God’s Word
Conclusion:
Church, Christ has given us a mighty task.
He has placed us in a world that is hurting.
A world that is sinful.
A world that does not seek Him.
A world that is selfish.
But it is a world that He loves.
Christ rose up this church to reach our community, region, nation, and world with the message that God loves them.
There is great truth to the old clique “people don’t care what you know until they know how much you care.”
Perhaps that explains why studies show that between 75 and 85% of people who come to visit a church come because of the invitation of a friend or relative.
They come because some that cares about them loved them enough to invite them to church.
But it doesn’t stop there.
It is not enough to just invite them to church.
We have to take a little piece of the church to them.
We must show them in tangible ways that we care about them and want to help them find a relationship with God.
We need to love people to Jesus.
May we pray – “Jesus GIVE ME YOUR EYES!”
