Exodus 12 begins the end of the ten plagues that God had brought down upon Egypt. The passover that was instituted during this time is still celebrated today. This story in the Bible is one of the greatest examples of mercy and faithfulness. We see God being satisfied in the judgement of his enemies, his people being rescued from oppression, and we see the beginning of a celebration that is commemorated today.

Exodus 12:1–13 ESV
1 The Lord said to Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt, 2 “This month shall be for you the beginning of months. It shall be the first month of the year for you. 3 Tell all the congregation of Israel that on the tenth day of this month every man shall take a lamb according to their fathers’ houses, a lamb for a household. 4 And if the household is too small for a lamb, then he and his nearest neighbor shall take according to the number of persons; according to what each can eat you shall make your count for the lamb. 5 Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male a year old. You may take it from the sheep or from the goats, 6 and you shall keep it until the fourteenth day of this month, when the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill their lambs at twilight. 7 “Then they shall take some of the blood and put it on the two doorposts and the lintel of the houses in which they eat it. 8 They shall eat the flesh that night, roasted on the fire; with unleavened bread and bitter herbs they shall eat it. 9 Do not eat any of it raw or boiled in water, but roasted, its head with its legs and its inner parts. 10 And you shall let none of it remain until the morning; anything that remains until the morning you shall burn. 11 In this manner you shall eat it: with your belt fastened, your sandals on your feet, and your staff in your hand. And you shall eat it in haste. It is the Lord’s Passover. 12 For I will pass through the land of Egypt that night, and I will strike all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and on all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgments: I am the Lord. 13 The blood shall be a sign for you, on the houses where you are. And when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and no plague will befall you to destroy you, when I strike the land of Egypt.

Introduction

When preaching from the Old Testament in the way that I am about to do I run the risk of misrepresenting Scripture. God is not only glorified through the preaching of Christ, he is honored also by reading of his mercy, goodness, and faithfulness throughout the history of Israel. The history of their salvation is important. Even if Christ is not in the picture the salvation history of Israel is still important because of how God has revealed himself.
The importance of this story.
The exodus as the gospel

Exegesis

Exodus 12:1–6 ESV
Vv. 1-3
This passover was so important that God changed the calendar. He changed they way the measured the year. The first month would be the month that they came out of Egypt. They measure their year based upon the moon, not the sun, so this first month begins around mid march. Before it was the beginning of September. The Passover begins on the evening of the fourteenth day of the month with the fifteenth day being the first full day. This year Passover began on March 27th and the full moon being on the 28th. So you count back fifteen days and the new year began on March 13th.
Easter is the first Sunday after the first full moon after the first day of Spring. Easter is celebrated this way to keep it close to Passover. When Jesus was crucified he was crucified on the day of preparation which is why they wanted to break the bones of those hanging so they would die faster that way there would be no bodies hanging during the passover. So, the lamb of God is crucified on the day of preparation, and then he rises during the Passover week.
Vv. 4-6
And just like the perfect lamb, Jesus was perfect as he died.
Jesus entered into the holy city on Sunday and four days later instituted the Lord’s supper and went to his trial like a lamb to be slaughtered.
On the tenth day the lamb was prepared. On the fourteenth day it was killed. Christ entered the holy city and four days later instituted the Lord’s supper. Thee days later the lamb of God was raised as the surety of our salvation; that God’s justice had been satisfied by the death of his only son proving that God had passed over our sins.
1 Corinthians 5:7 ESV
7 Cleanse out the old leaven that you may be a new lump, as you really are unleavened. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed.
John 1:29 ESV
29 The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!
1 Peter 1:19 ESV
19 but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot.
Exodus 12:7–10 ESV
7 “Then they shall take some of the blood and put it on the two doorposts and the lintel of the houses in which they eat it. 8 They shall eat the flesh that night, roasted on the fire; with unleavened bread and bitter herbs they shall eat it. 9 Do not eat any of it raw or boiled in water, but roasted, its head with its legs and its inner parts. 10 And you shall let none of it remain until the morning; anything that remains until the morning you shall burn.
Vv. 7-8
The listened to The command given to them through Moses. By faith they believed this command and applied the blood to the door post. By faith we believe and are justified and the blood of the lamb is applied to us. Even Greater, is the blood is applied to us. They had to do it themselves, it has already been done for us. This is the perfect illustration of the Law and the Gospel. Whereas the law says do, Gospel says done. Christ has already fulfilled all and as he gave up his spirit he cried out, “It is finished” showing that everything has been done for us all we need to do is simply repent and believe.
It was not the shedding of the blood that saved them, it was the blood being applied to them through them having faith to listen to the command given.
They ate that night with nothing left over just as Christ’s body did not remain on the cross till morning.
They ate bitter herbs, wheres as Jesus drank down the bitter cup of God’s wrath died the bitter death we deserved.
They are without leaven just as we are to be without the leaven of malice or envy.
Exodus 12:11–13 ESV
11 In this manner you shall eat it: with your belt fastened, your sandals on your feet, and your staff in your hand. And you shall eat it in haste. It is the Lord’s Passover. 12 For I will pass through the land of Egypt that night, and I will strike all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and on all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgments: I am the Lord. 13 The blood shall be a sign for you, on the houses where you are. And when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and no plague will befall you to destroy you, when I strike the land of Egypt.
Eat it in haste
God has passed over our sins forever.
God ransomed his people not to simply leave them where they were but to bring them to the promise land.
One people many household, one people many ethnicities, nationalities… called to the same thing repent and believe. (Pentecost)

Righteousness and holiness.
