Amen.
I love when we get to sing scripture.
But please remain standing with me or stand with me and honor of God's word as we have our scripture reading.
Our trip to reading today is going to be in 1st Corinthians chapter 5. We're going to be looking at verses 9, through 13 First Corinthians chapter 5 9 through 13.
I wrote to you in my epistle not to keep company with sexually immoral people.
Get, I certainly did not mean with a sexually immoral people of this world or with a coverages or extortioners or idolaters since then, you would need to go out of the world.
But now I have written to you, not to keep company.
With anyone named a brother who is sexually immoral, or cabbages, or an idolator or a reviler, or a drunkard, or an extortioner, not even to eat with such a person for what have I to do with judging those also who are outside?
Do you not judge those or inside?
But those who are outside God, judges, therefore put away from yourselves the evil person.
It'll all be blessed by the reading and hearing of his word.
This morning, please be seated.
Christians to avoid.
That is a strange title.
Christians to avoid, this will make more sense as we go through the passage this morning.
Let's begin with prayer.
Father, thank you for your word.
We are told that.
It is living and active.
It is sharper than a two edged sword that it pierces to the dividing asunder of Soul and Spirit for joints and Marrow and that it discerns, the thoughts and intents of the heart.
When I think of piercing father, I don't think of something comfortable or enjoyable But sometimes it is necessary.
Until father as your word speaks to us.
Today, I asked that I would be your tool and instrument to communicate your truth to your people.
And that father, we would leave here changed a score.
Christ will be glorified in the proclamation of his word today in Jesus name.
Amen.
Couple of weeks ago, my children were watching a TV show and this show is probably the Pinnacle of cinematic production.
I mean, it is incredibly acted incredibly written clever plot lines.
I'm, of course talking about the cartoon, SpongeBob SquarePants.
I hope you all got the sarcasm there.
Okay.
Sanctified sarcasm, that's what that was.
There is however, an episode of SpongeBob that they happen to be watching which is one of my favorites.
And you might think.
Why do you have favorites?
I have four kids, so I have favorite kids episodes of cartoon, squirrel named Sandy Sandy is a squirrel who for inexplicable reasons.
Has a diving suit and lives at the bottom of the sea.
Why I have no idea SpongeBob and she invites him over to her dome.
That is in the sea and it is full of air.
And she says, are you okay with air?
And he goes, well, of course I love her.
She has no idea what are is the arrives at her house deed goes inside and after a few seconds realizes I don't like air.
And he starts to dry out.
And he hides this from Sandy because he thinks that hiding it from her is the right thing to do.
He's worried that if he tells her it's going to cause issues, and so he conceals it until it gets so bad, that he turns into a sponge in the show and she has a dump water on him to revive him.
Why do I like this so much?
Because she thinks that the loving thing to do is to conceal.
What's happening when in reality, that's the worst thing that he could do for himself or for sanding, the best thing to do would be to confront the situation and get help right in our passage in 1st Corinthians.
The Corinthian Church things that they're doing what is loving and right but in reality what they're doing is damaging to the church and to this man who is in this situation.
attempting to tolerate something damaging, only invites destruction, The Corinthian Church is trying to tolerate something that is damaging and what is important to recognize if it's not just the church that is at stake in this situation.
It's also the man who is caught in this sexual sin with his stepmother church, right?
That's not his goal goal is to protect the church and to see this man come to repentance.
There's a problem, the actions taken by the Corinthian, Believers are actually hindering repentance and they're virtually begging for the destruction of the church by the actions that are taken.
And let me just recap.
What's happening in the Corinthian Church.
When Paul rides, there is a man who is in an immoral sexual relationship with his stepmother and the church is boasting about their tolerance of this issue.
That's the situation.
And Paul was writing to address this issue.
So if you want more background than that, we can talk about it a few weeks ago in the sermon titled, sexual Purity matters.
And so you can look it up and see where we're at.
And Foster repentance, two types of Christians must be avoided to protect the church and Foster repentance two times.
Christians must be avoided.
The goal of avoidance is restoration, this is really important.
We're going to stress this several times in the message.
The goal of the avoidance is restoration.
Only When sin is dealt with can shrew Unity exist, only has dealt with through Unity exists.
There's two types of Christians that we avoid number one, that was to avoid the unrepentant, avoid the unrepentant.
What are the interesting things about raising children?
And I say, one of the interesting things because there are lots of them.
One of the interesting things about raising children is teaching them how to apologize.
See there's a difference between I'm sorry that I hurt you and saying I'm sorry that I got caught hurting you and you can tell the difference when you're talking with kid there's some who have the I'm sorry that I got taught rather than I'm sorry that I did it and what we want to see in our children is exactly what God wants to see if he wants to see repentance, the word, repent means a change of mind, a change of mind and biblically speaking, we know that someone's mind has been changed when their behavior follows.
Okay, so repentance is a change of mine that is the pattern of mind has changed.
First, the behavior follows sometimes in order to change, someone's mind, consequences are necessary.
And so, that's why Paul tells the Corinthians to avoid certain Christian.
Cure me carefully.
I am not giving you permission to avoid people.
You don't like okay I am not giving you permission to avoid people.
You don't like this is a very specific situation that we're going to explain when Paul says it's okay to avoid someone.
So remember the goal, the goal is the protection of the church and the repentance of the center for Texan of the church, repentance of the center to do this correctly.
We're going to take 3 action so we want to avoid the unrepentant.
We need to take three actions in order to do that correctly.
The first is this to avoid.
We must understand to avoid.
We must understand 1st Corinthians.
Chapter 5, verse 9. 1st Corinthians, chapter 5 verse 9, I wrote to you in my epistle not to keep company with sexually immoral people.
Paul wants them to understand and what he tells him is.
I wrote a previous letter.
We don't have that letter K.
The point is Paul has already addressed this and they misunderstood, they totally missed it.
You missed it the first time.
Let me give this to you again.
Okay, I wrote you in a previous of his will not to keep company with sexually immoral people.
Do you need to give clarification and that's what we need.
We need to understand what Paul is saying.
In this particular instance, we need to understand two things.
The first thing we need to understand is what does Paul mean when he says, I don't want you to keep company with sexually immoral people.
What does he mean?
What does it mean by? Don't keep company.
What does it mean by sexually immoral?
But if you're having a conversation with someone and you find out that they are living with someone that they're not married, you were supposed to go.
