Scr. 1Samuel 17:32-51
There will be times in our lives that we feel as if our problems are larger than life!
Some of you, including myself, have had battles in life,
· And even though we have seen God work before,
· We have seen God deliver us before we have seen God make a way out of no way.
· And even though we have seen God do the impossible
We still, at times, have a sense of doubt when God will come through for us.
· God wants us to understand that our battles are not our end!
· Even though our battles are meant to kill us
· But evidence shows us they are intended to keep us.
Many of us, including me, are facing larger than life’s problems
· And we struggle with God’s ability to deliver us; we still find ourselves unprepared for battle.
That’s a good place to find ourselves in the text this morning a battle between David and Goliath
· However, this text shows us more than-- how we can defeat our giants
· David asked Saul to let him go out and fight the Philistine, and he was initially turned down
· But Saul then permits him to fight Goliath, and the only reason he allows him to go and fight is that David made his case that him for the job.
David was prepared for the battle— and the only way we will win your battles
· You must be ready to fight the seen and the unseen battles in your lives
· Then we must be prepared to do God’s will
How do we know when it’s time to fight the battle?
· When those around us underestimate the God within us Vs.34-37 says
· But David said to Saul, “Your servant used to keep his father’s sheep, and when a lion or a bear came and took a lamb out of the flock, I went out after it and struck it, and delivered the lamb from its mouth; and when it arose against me, I caught it by its beard, and struck and killed it. Your servant has killed both lion and bear, and this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, seeing he has defied the armies of the living God.” Moreover, David said, “The LORD, who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear, He will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.”
David comes to the camp and overhears the conversation, and says, I got this! (Look at David’s Faith).
Look at the text: Vs. 37 says:” And David said, “The LORD who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.” And Saul said to David, “Go, and the LORD be with you!”
Vs. 38-40--- Then Saul clothed David with his armor. He put a helmet of bronze on his head and clothed him with a coat of mail, and David strapped his sword over his armor. And he tried in vain to go, for he had not tested them.
(Watch This… Don’t miss it)
Then David said to Saul, “I cannot go with these, for I have not tested them.” So, David put them off. Then he took his staff in his hand and chose five smooth stones from the brook and put them in his shepherd's pouch. His sling was in his hand, and he approached the Philistine.
· YOUR FAITH HAS TO BE GREATER THAN YOUR ENEMIES! (GET YOUR ROCKS READY)
Goliath looks at David as if he is not equipped for the job
· It’s the enemy's job to make you think you can’t do the job.
· They’ll say things like; you can’t do the job
· You are too old to go back to school
· You don’t have what it takes
· And if you aren’t careful, you’ll begin to underestimate the God within you!
Because if He did it before, God can do it again
· Don’t let your enemies tell you what God can’t do
· The enemies plan to kill you, and God’s plan to keep you
Because when he’s trying to take out
· It’s God’s place to show you He’ll bring you out
· You can’t listen to everyone
· You can’t listen to people on the job
· You can’t tell everyone about what God is doing in your life
· Because some people are there just to get you off track from what God is doing
What if David would have listened to Saul
· What if Jesus would not have come down from heaven to save us
When people start underestimating the God that’s in you
· Get your rocks ready!
When people start talking about you
· Get your rocks ready!
When people start doubting you
· Get your rocks ready!
· Because He’s about to place you
· He’s about to elevate you
· He’s getting ready to give you victory
· Ps. 110:1b says: “I make your enemies your footstool.”
· WHEN YOUR ENEMIES COME IN LIKE A FLOOD--- GET YOUR ROCK READY
You have to have the confidence to know your enemies are going to fall because they underestimated the power of the God you serve
· Not only will they underestimate the power of God
· But you know when your enemies no longer have power over you when you no longer acknowledge them by name
Look at what he calls him in vs. 36: “Your servant has struck down both lions and bears and this uncircumcised Philistine. He didn’t call him by his name; this uncircumcised Philistine he spoke to him with no respect. will be like one of them, seeing he has defied the armies of the living God.” Moreover, David said, “The LORD, who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear, He will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.”
Vs.38: So, Saul clothed David with his armor, and he put a bronze helmet on his head; he also clothed him with a coat of mail. David fastened his sword to his armor and tried to walk, for he had not tested them. And David said to Saul, “I cannot walk with these, for I have not tested them.” So, David took them off.
· Saul’s is trying to protect Davis, but the armor was too big
· Some of you cannot fight because you have too much on your back
· You’re carrying some things that are holding you back
· Deadweight - leeches
· Haters
· Relationships
· David realized if he went into battle caring this stuff that wasn’t meant for him to carry, he would lose the battle and alter God’s plan for victory
· He simply became himself
· David was a shepherd, so he was already wrapped up into who God wanted him to be; he wasn’t a warrior or king yet
How do you know you are ready for battle?
· When you begin to walk comfortably in what God has called you to be
· Be who God called you to be
Vs. 40: Then he took his staff in his hand, and he chose for himself five smooth stones from the brook, and put them in a shepherd’s bag, in a pouch which he had, and his sling was in his hand. And he drew near to the Philistine. So, the Philistine came, and began drawing near to David, and the man who bore the shield went before him. And when the Philistine looked about and saw David,
· David chooses five stones not because the weapon was right but because the way maker was right.
· It’s not why he chooses five stones, but the five right stones were in the right place for the battle.
· You have to use what God has given you (Get Your Rocks Ready)
Vs.41 So, the Philistine came, and began drawing near to David, and the man who bore the shield went before him. And when the Philistine looked about and saw David, he disdained him; for he was only a youth, ruddy and good-looking. So, the Philistine said to David, “Am I a dog, that you come to me with sticks?” And the Philistine cursed David by his gods. And the Philistine said to David, “Come to me, and I will give your flesh to the birds of the air and the beasts of the field!”
Vs45. Then David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword, with a spear, and with a javelin. But I come to you in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.
Vs.46 This day, the LORD will deliver you into my hand, and I will strike you and take your head from you. And this day, I will give the carcasses of the camp of the Philistines to the birds of the air and the wild beasts of the earth, that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel.
Vs.47 Then all this assembly shall know that the LORD does not save with sword and spear; for the battle is the LORD’s, and He will give you into our hands.”
SEE WHEN YOU CUT OFF THE HEAD OF THE ENIMIE IT NO LONGER HAS POWER OVER YOU
· No longer give a name to the enemy that tries to hinder your purpose
· You know you are ready to fight your battle when people underestimate the power of God in you
· You know you are ready to fight your battle when God has put in you enough to fight your battle.
· What God has put into you is enough to see your victory
· When things get tough – Get your rocks ready
· When all hell breaks through in your family – Get your rocks ready
· When you have financial problems – Get your rocks ready
