Luke 10:1–12 ESV
1 After this the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them on ahead of him, two by two, into every town and place where he himself was about to go. 2 And he said to them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest. 3 Go your way; behold, I am sending you out as lambs in the midst of wolves. 4 Carry no moneybag, no knapsack, no sandals, and greet no one on the road. 5 Whatever house you enter, first say, ‘Peace be to this house!’ 6 And if a son of peace is there, your peace will rest upon him. But if not, it will return to you. 7 And remain in the same house, eating and drinking what they provide, for the laborer deserves his wages. Do not go from house to house. 8 Whenever you enter a town and they receive you, eat what is set before you. 9 Heal the sick in it and say to them, ‘The kingdom of God has come near to you.’ 10 But whenever you enter a town and they do not receive you, go into its streets and say, 11 ‘Even the dust of your town that clings to our feet we wipe off against you. Nevertheless know this, that the kingdom of God has come near.’ 12 I tell you, it will be more bearable on that day for Sodom than for that town.

God sends out laborers

He sent out the 12, which is recorded for us in Luke 9 and now we see Him sending out the 72 here in Luke 10. He essentially gives them the same instructions, which we will look at more closely in a minute, but the first point is a critical one, it is a point that if we miss, we will fail to accomplish our God-intending purpose.

Glorifying God, as a Community, that is Missional

This is the purpose, intention and plan of God for the church
To rightfully bring glory to Himself, the One who alone is worthy of glory and honor and praise.
Col 1:18 And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent.
Glorifying Community
As a community to one another, as a body, as individual members of one body, gifted by the Holy Spirit as He works in and through us, molding and shaping us, to transform us by the renewing of our minds.
We are a body
Acts 2:42 ESV
42 And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.
Hebrews 10:24–25 ESV
24 And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, 25 not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.
Glorifying Community that is Missional
We become missional to the world around us. Missional to the people outside the church.
2 Corinthians 5:17–21 ESV
17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. 18 All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation; 19 that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. 20 Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. 21 For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
We need to be somewhat strategic and intentional for this to take place.
We want to give each person in our community an opportunity to accept or reject the Gospel of Jesus Christ, without coming or going anywhere. (Missio Church)
I’m not idolizing this particular church but I agree with their mission statement.
There are three particular instances, that Christ “sent out” or initiated people for an apostolic mission, in other words to be a missional part of the Christian community.
Luke 9, Luke 10 and again in the other Gospels such as Matthew 28.
Luke 9:2 ESV
2 and he sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal.
Luke 10:1–2 ESV
1 After this the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them on ahead of him, two by two, into every town and place where he himself was about to go. 2 And he said to them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.
The Great Commission is familiar to us, yet it is also possibly too familiar that we forget it is a command for us to fulfill.
Jesus says, in Matt 28:18 all authority in Heaven and Earth has been given to me. . .
Matthew 28:19–20 ESV
19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
but look at the specifics again of Jesus’ instructions to His disciples in the Gospel of Luke.
Luke 9:2 ESV
2 and he sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal.
Luke 10:4–12 ESV

God Sends out His laborers to:

Proclaim the Kingdom of God and heal!

They are to proclaim that Jesus is the Christ, the Messiah, the Chosen One, who has come to save the people from their sins, and they were to heal the people.
We are commanded to do the same, though we may not be healing people’s physical ailments in such miraculous ways, we are to love them, because God loved us, and His love brings healing, in the most essential way, spiritual healing, that often comes about as we seek to meet physical needs.

Go! But go. . . essentially empty handed!

They were to trust in God’s provision of their needs, as they went. So are we! We need to trust the Lord, not in ourselves.

Pronounce Peace on each house you enter!

This was a peace such as Christ pronounced on those who trusted in Him, those He healed on multiple occasions said, your faith has made you well, go in peace. In other words, this is a lasting, sustained objective reality, that comes into the life of a believer.

Accept what is given to you!

Here we see the important command of contentment, such as Paul testified to in Philippians 4, and we’re told, godliness with contentment is great gain. He was teaching to serve the Lord, but only for the right motives, not for financial gain, or a better social status, or comfort.

Tell them the Kingdom of Heaven is near

His laborers are merely messengers of peace, hope and healing in Jesus name. They have no power in themselves.
His laborers simply go, trusting in His provision and protection
His laborers are content with what is given them, not seeking for a better meal or better arrangements elsewhere.
This is because the Lord God Almighty was bringing about His Kingdom. He was about to crush the serpent’s head, though His heal would be bruised.

Glorifying Missional Community

These three purposes work in harmony and balance with one another. When they get out of proportion, they will each fail, and the church thereby fails to accomplish its ultimate essential purpose in God’s plan.
The three purposes work in a cyclical fashion.
As we seek to Glorify God, we form a community of His followers, designed to equip, worship, fellowship and edify one another, which then forms a platform for us to be missional, as we team together and encourage one another to love the lost and minister to them, being missional in all aspects of our lives.

Two Warnings!

There is a warning to the laborers, there are wolves in the area and you are like sheep. In the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus’ says to the disciples, be wise as serpents and as innocent as doves.
Also a warning to those who don’t accept the message of the Kingdom of God, that has come near! Woe to Chorazin! Woe to Bethsaida! It will be more bearable on that day for Sodom than for the town that doesn’t receive His laborers.

Rejoice & Rejoice!

Luke 10:20 ESV
20 Nevertheless, do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.”
This is certainly, worth rejoicing and celebration. Notice, Jesus instructs them to not rejoice over the miracles, they accomplished, but rather to rejoice in the miracle that God has done, in them.

Rejoice & Rejoice!

Rejoice, that your names are written in Heaven and Rejoice in the Holy Spirit, that God has revealed these things to the most talented, gifted and wise among men, so the ignorant and weak don’t mess up the work that needs to be accomplished. NO NO NO!
Luke 10:21–23 ESV
21 In that same hour he rejoiced in the Holy Spirit and said, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to little children; yes, Father, for such was your gracious will. 22 All things have been handed over to me by my Father, and no one knows who the Son is except the Father, or who the Father is except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.” 23 Then turning to the disciples he said privately, “Blessed are the eyes that see what you see!
