Wave instead of Meet and Greet
This week we’re continuing on in our Foolproof series and Pastor Merle is speaking about wisdom. In light of that, I thought it would be helpful to reflect on what true wisdom is. One of the best places in all of Scripture to hear about true wisdom is 1 Corinthians 1:18-25
1 Corinthians 1:18-25 - “For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written, “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and the discernment of the discerning I will thwart.” Where is the one who is wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? For since, in the wisdom of God, the world did not know God through wisdom, it pleased God through the folly of what we preach to save those who believe. For Jews demand signs and Greeks seek wisdom, but we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles, but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. For the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men.”
The cross is a stumbling block to every culture that has ever existed including our own. The wisdom of the cross is a wisdom that a secular world can’t understand. It’s a wisdom that has something counter-intuitive to say to every generation and nation.
It’s a wisdom that says that Jesus died for every individual, even those we disagree with in every way politically and religiously. It’s a wisdom that says that even those people, no matter how much pundits and politicians and people on social media on either side of the aisle may deride them, even those people were made in the image of God and are worthy of respect even if they don’t treat us with the respect we deserve.
The wisdom of the cross is a sacrificial wisdom. It’s a wisdom that makes sacrifices for neighbors, just as Jesus sacrificed for us. It’s a wisdom that puts the interests of God and love of neighbor before our own interests. It’s a wisdom that sounds more like Heaven than a phrase on social media or a campaign slogan.
The wisdom of the cross will challenge each of us in some way, no matter how long we’ve been Christians. If we would pursue this wisdom, the wisdom of the cross, with all of our might for the rest of our days, it was transform us in amazing ways. The surest way to look more like Jesus is to pursue the wisdom of the cross. And none of us will finish the task of seeking wisdom this side of glory because none of us will fully look like Jesus this side of glory.
But one day, when we get to Heaven, we will get to gaze on the fullness of wisdom face to face and it will all have been worth it, no matter how many sacrifices we make in this life because we will get to enjoy an eternity of perfect joy and peace with our Savior praising His name. Let’s prepare to sing together as we set out to seek that foolproof wisdom of that old rugged cross together this morning.
