Introduction
Our sixth saying on the cross this evening is found in the Gospel of John in chapter 19. John 19:30
John 19:30 ESV
When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, “It is finished,” and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
As I was dwelling on this passage I kept thinking that at surface value it doesn’t make sense. I mean, think about it. Jesus says “It is finished.” but how could it be finished when the Resurrection is yet to happen? Even tonight, I’m the sixth speaker on the seven sayings of Jesus on the cross. How can it be finished when there is one more speaker to go? So with our short time tonight we’re going to ask and answer two questions.
What is “finished”? or said differently, what does Jesus mean when he says “It is finished.”?
How does one benefit from Jesus saying “it is finished”?
You’ll want to put a placeholder in John 1:1-17 to flip back and forth.
Body
What is “finished?” or “What does Jesus mean when he says “it is finished.”?
Jesus completes a task given to him by God.
What task by God?
To be a sacrifice for sins for all who believe.
Example of sacrifice vs a punishment
Communion with the kids
What is this? Bread
What does the bread represent? The body of Jesus.
What is special or unique about the body of Jesus. He never sinned. (Obeyed or fulfilled God’s law)
What is this? Wine
What does the wine represent? The blood of Jesus.
What is special or unique about the blood of Jesus? It was a sacrifice. (Not a punishment like everyone else who has ever died)
Why must Jesus be a sacrifice?
The right to become a child of God was lost.
John 1:9-13
John 1:9–13 ESV
The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him. He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him. But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.
Lost by Adam in creation account.
Lost by you and me daily as we sin.
In order for the right to be restored Jesus must fulfil the law and user in a new era, a new covenant.
John 1:17
John 1:17 ESV
For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.
How will Jesus user in “grace and truth”?
By completed the work, the task, given to him by God.
John 17:4
John 17:4 ESV
I glorified you on earth, having accomplished the work that you gave me to do.
How does one benefit from Jesus saying “it is finished”?
By faith.
Sola Fide “Faith Alone”
Not works.
Not our work but Jesus’ work.
Jesus was asked about his works in John 6
John 6:28-29
John 6:28–29 ESV
Then they said to him, “What must we do, to be doing the works of God?” Jesus answered them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.”
They ask about the “works” plural
Jesus replies with “work” singular.
The “work” Jesus is referring to concludes on the cross with “It is finished.”
Prayer: That those would embrace the work of Christ by faith. Repent and believe then demonstrate that faith through baptism and obedience to the word daily.
