*Give Me Liberty*
/ /
*INTRODUCTION*:
1.     “Give me liberty or give me death!” (Patrick Henry, 1775, before the Virginia legislature).
2.     When we think of liberty, some tend to think of it almost in terms of */sovereignty/*.
As if by liberty we mean that no one can deny our wants or desires.
3.
But when it comes to the spiritual realm, it is more accurate, /liberty is the prevention of being controlled by anyone (other than God?), in a way that, because of our free moral agency, depends deeply upon our ability and desire understand God’s will, and to exert self-control./
(1)         Here we will find */liberty from sin/* (Acts 2:38; 3:19).
(2)         Here we will find */liberty from error/*.
(3)         Here we will find */liberty from self-destruction/* (1 Pet.
4:17-18).
4.     Christianity is much more than adhering to a master list of do’s and don’ts.
However, a Christian is not free from obligation towards God.
(1)         He desires that I do certain things and do not do other things.
(2)         I am perfectly free to yield to His will, and I am free to resist.
A.
If I resist, I am free for the instant, but immediately lose all my liberty to bondage of sin (Rom.
6:17-18?)
B.       If I submit… free from sin… error… and self-destruction.
*DISCUSSION*: To Have Liberty From Sin, Error, and Self-Destruction, Depends Upon My Ability And Desire To Understand God’s Will And To Yield To It --
I.         Angels Know Limitations To Their Liberty.
1.      Interesting study (angels) and we while the Bible definitely shows us angelic beings in heaven, that does not mean that all angels described therein are.
2.      Whether they are earthly beings or heavenly they are equally accountable.
(1)           They can’t teach anything other than what God teaches  (Gal.
1:8-9).
(2)           They don’t have the power to escape the judgment of God (2 Pet.
2:4) – /“…God did not spare the angels who sinned, but cast them down to hell and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved for judgment…/”
(3)           They don’t have the liberty to accept acts of worship (Rev.
22:8-9).
II.
The Prophets Knew Limitations To Their Liberty.
1.
A prophet could not speak according to his desire (cf.
Num.
23:11-12).
·    /Must I not take heed to speak what the Lord has put in my mouth?/
2.      Micaiah said, “/as the Lord lives, whatever the Lord says to me that I will speak//” (1 Ki. 22:14//)./
3.      Ezek.
3:17-19.
4.      1 Jn. 4:1-3.
III.
Jesus Knew Limitations To His Liberty.
1.      Jesus said that He did not speak on His */own authority/*, but that of the Father who sent Him and commanded Him what He should say (Jn.
12:49).
2.      Jesus came to do the will of God (cf.
Heb.
10:7).
He was free to choose otherwise, but with perfect liberty He chose not to be controlled by anyone other than God (sovereign).
Cf.
Heb.
5:8-9.
3.      "Then Jesus said to them, “/When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am He, and that I do nothing of Myself; but as My Father taught Me, I speak these things./"
(John 8:28, NKJV)
4.      Jesus was free –
(1)           To refuse to go about His Father’s business.
(2)           To give in to the temptations of Satan (Mt.
4).
(3)           To accept the position as an earthly king.
(4)           To circumvent the crucifixion.
5.      Jesus chose perfect liberty instead.
Not to be controlled by anyone except Himself.
IV.
The Holy Spirit Knew Limitations To His Liberty.
1.      "However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come."
(John 16:13, NKJV)
2.      Acts 2:16-17.
V.
All Men, Including Christians, Have Limitations To Their Liberty, But Christians Freely Choose Them.
1.      Jer.
10:23 – /O Lord, I know the way of man is not in himself; It is not in man who walks to direct his own steps/.
2.      2 Jn. 9-11 – /Whoever transgresses and does not abide in the doctrine of Christ does not have God.
He who abides in the doctrine of Christ has both the Father and the Son.
If anyone comes to you and does not bring this doctrine, do not receive him into your house nor greet him, for he who greets him shares in his evil deeds/.
3.      James 4:14-17  - “…/For what is your life?
It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and vanishes away.
Instead, you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we shall live and do this or that.
But now you boast in your arrogance.
All such boasting is evil.
Therefore, to him who knows to do good and does not do it, to him it is sin/.”
4.      Christians must –
(1)           Walk in the light.
(2)           | | We are not at liberty to do otherwise.
|

2:24).
(3)           Contend earnestly (Jude 3) for the faith.
(4)           Grow in grace and knowledge of our Lord
(5)           Bear fruit of the Spirit.
(6)           Present our bodies as a living sacrifice (Rom.
12:1-2).
*CONCLUSION*:
1.
It is one thing to only be concerned about and controlled by self (bondage).
It is entirely another to posses self-control and be concerned solely with doing the will of God.
2.      Perfect liberty = Doing what is right, and it will deliver you to eternal life.
(1)      Doing ~/ Acting ~/ Living - NOT because God tells you to do.
(2)      BUT instead, doing so because you want to, choosing to do what is right in the sight of God.
A.
God offers you liberty  (From sin… ignorance… and death).
B.
You are at liberty to refuse God’s offer.
Some think that this is liberty and life with Christ is not (Rom.
6:16-17).
C.
Gives new meaning to idea that in Christ, there is neither Jew nor Greek, neither slave, nor free.

Lev.
25:1-10.
