Sin destroys man
INTRODUCTION:
1. Read Gen. 6:1-13.
2. Regarding the text:
(1) Context is somewhat evident though there are some difficulties in understanding.
(2) Time from creation is not exactly known.
(3) By this time mankind has grown quite corrupt.
A. Sons of God (v. 2) = lineage of Seth.
B. Daughters of men = lineage of Cain.
C. In other words – Good men were being corrupted and intermarrying with wicked.
3. The picture painted of the devastating effects of sin is graphic, terrible, and sobering.
4. Sin is not something to be laughed at! Sin is not something to be ignored! Sin destroys!
DISCUSSION: FROM OUR TEXT AND FROM GOD’S INSPIRED PERSPECTIVE NOTICE --
I. sin does not escape the cognizance of god. (v. 12) “So god looked…
1. God looked and saw the sinfulness of men.
2. Fool has said in his heart there is no God (Psa. 14:1).
3. God does not spy but rather by His nature He is aware of all our ways. “The eyes of the Lord are in every place, keeping watch on the evil and the good.” (Prov. 15:3)
4. God is omni / all – present; knowing – niscient; kind – benevolent.
5. These things are not said as a scare tactic but rather a reminder.
II. SIN IS A CHOICE (V. 12) “FOR ALL FLESH HAD CORRUPTED THEIR WAY ON THE EARTH.”
1. Their way was not God’s way!
2. Some teach pre-destination.
(1) Yet, the Bible shows that you are a free moral agent.
(2) You have a choice to make. You have a choice.
3. You have a choice (Rom. 11:22 – consider the goodness and severity of God: on those who fell, severity; but toward you, goodness, if you continue in His goodness. Otherwise you also shall be cut off.
4. You have a choice - Mt. 7:24; Mt. 7:13-14.
5. God through Moses teaches that sin is a choice.
6. You have a choice and you will live with the consequence (i.e. DEATH).
III. sin comes from your heart (v. 5) “every intent of the thought of the heart was only evil…”
1. Would to God that men’s hearts would align with the heart of God.
(1) Crime would decline dramatically.
(2) Cost of living would decline dramatically.
(3) Sense of security would soar.
2. “Keep your heart with all diligence for out of it spring the issues of life” (Prov. 4:23).
3. Prov. 23:7 & Mt. 15:18 – “those things which proceed out of the mouth come from the heart, and they defile a man.”
4. Sew a thought, reap an act; sew an act, reap a habit; sew a habit, reap a life; sew a life and reap a destiny.
5. We say, “A penny for your thoughts!” But reality = “An eternity for your thoughts!
6. We must do better. Being careful what we watch (Video games, movies, places, music).
(1) They stimulate thoughts.
(2) We must put a guard on our heart.
(3) If you say, “Oh it doesn’t bother / tempt me” that is WRONG! Bible sez!
7. Sin begins not in your circumstance or companions! It beings in your heart.
IV. sin is ugly (v. 5-12).
1. Notice the words used:
(1) Wickedness of man (v. 5).
(2) Thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.
(3) Corrupt (v. 11) = ruined = a reference to idolatry.
(4) Violence (v. 11) = rape / murder.
(5) Notice – Men grew corrupt in their relations with God, THEN corrupt in relations to other men!
(6) Here is the history of the Lord’s church, Your family, our nation, etc…
2. Sin appears right when actually it is wrong; Bring life but really death; Appears satisfying, but rather is soul emptying; Appears insignificant but it is so major!
(1) Again, look no further than your T.V.
(2) Do they make us laugh at sin, or do they show heart broken spouses; grieving parents; scared children?
3. “We lie down in our shame and our reproach covers us…” (Jer. 3:25).

V. sin is dominating (Read v. 5).
1. What picture do you get? Sin engulfed, ruled, conquered! A malignancy!
2. Sin will produce fruit in your life. Maybe today. Maybe tomorrow.
3. Sin will rule your life if you allow it.
(1) Jn. 8:34 – “Most assuredly, I say to you, whoever commits sin is a slave of sin.”
(2) Rom. 6:16-18 – “Do you not know that to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, you are that one’s slaves whom you obey, whether of sin to death, or of obedience to righteousness? But God be thanked that though you were slaves of sin, yet you obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine to which you were delivered. And having been set free from sin, you became slaves of ..”
4. Ask an alcoholic! Ask one addicted to gamling! Drugs! Man & woman in affair!
5. Truth = no man can begin to obey God after death, but it is also true that not all men can obey God before death.
(1) Cf. the “other” thief.
(2) He saw the pain and agony of Christ. He experienced his own pain!
(3) What was uttered in his dying last breath? BLASPHEMY!
(4) EXPLAIN THAT? Answer = sin can dominate your life!
VI. sin is consequential (v. 13) “The end of all flesh has come before Me, for the earth is filled with violence throug them; and behold, I will destory them with the earth.”
1. God said “I will destroy them!”
2. Sin causes the benevolent attributes of God to reach their limits.
(1) Limited not by God but by your own action or lack of.
3. Sin will destroy: Your name, body, prayer life, economically, home, community, and soul.
4. Sin will ultimately lead to the consequence of hell.
(1) What is the worst thing about hell?
(2) Answer = there the wrath of God will be poured out. Not one microscopic particle of mercy will be available.
CONCLUSION:
1. If you are allowing sin to enter your life, we remind you that:
(1) Sin does not escape the cognizance of God.
(2) Sin is a choice!
(3) Sin begins in your heart.
(4) Sin is ugly.
(5) Sin will dominate your life.
(6) Sin is consequential.
2. When you get through with sin, remember that it may not be through with you.
