Who Do You Say That I Am?

Matthew 16:13–17 NKJV
When Jesus came into the region of Caesarea Philippi, He asked His disciples, saying, “Who do men say that I, the Son of Man, am?” So they said, “Some say John the Baptist, some Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter answered and said, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Jesus answered and said to him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My Father who is in heaven.

Who is this Jesus?

There is no answer more important than this answer.
Your answer to this question will determine everything else about your existence.
Jesus was born to Mary and was raised by Joseph and Mary.
Jesus had half-brothers and sisters.
Jesus grew up in a city called Nazareth.
Historical sources confirm that He lived.
But who is this Jesus? A man? A teacher? A deceiver? A lunatic? A liar? God?

“Who do men say that I, the Son of Man, am?”

Many define Jesus based on OPINION.
To some He was the carpenter’s son.
To some He was John the Baptist.
To some He was Elijah the prophet who was to come.
To some He was Jeremiah the prophet.
To some He was one of the other prophets.
Many define Jesus in terms of their own IDENTITY.
To artists, He is the One altogether lovely.
To architects, He is the Chief Cornerstone.
To physicians, He is the Great Physician.
To preachers, He is the Word of God.
To philosophers, He is the Wisdom of God.
To geologists, He is the Rock of ages.
To farmers, He is the Lord of the harvest.
To professors, He is the Master Teacher.
To philanthropists, He is God’s Unspeakable Gift.
Many define Jesus in terms of their NEED.
To the sick, He is the Great Physician.
To the bound, He is the Great Deliverer.
To the lost, He is the Way.
To the hungry, He is the Bread of Life.
To the thirsty, He is the Water of Life.
To the distressed, He is the Prince of Peace.
To the weary, He is the Sabbath Rest.
To the lonely, He is Emmanuel, God with us.
To the prisoner, He is the Redeemer.
To the wanderer, He is the Great Shepherd.
To the sorrowful, He is the Comforter.
To the broken, He is the Mender.
To the deceived, He is the Truth.
To the dying, He is the Life.
Illustration: Six Blind Men and the Elephant
The first felt its side and determined an elephant is a WALL
The second felt its tusk and determined an elephant is a SPEAR
The third felt its trunk and determined an elephant is a SNAKE
The fourth felt its knee and determined an elephant is a TREE
The fifth felt is ear and determined an elephant is a FAN
The sixth felt its tail and determined and elephant is a ROPE
Though each was partly right, they were all wrong!
We can all be partly right about Jesus, and yet, all be wrong.

“Who do you say that I AM?”

Peter declared, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”
Peter did not declare this based on observation, hearsay, profession, or need.
Peter declared this based upon a revelation from God.
Matthew 16:17 NKJV
Jesus answered and said to him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My Father who is in heaven.

Who does God say He is?

Matthew 3:16–17 NKJV
When He had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him. And suddenly a voice came from heaven, saying, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”
Romans 1:1–4 NKJV
Paul, a bondservant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated to the gospel of God which He promised before through His prophets in the Holy Scriptures, concerning His Son Jesus Christ our Lord, who was born of the seed of David according to the flesh, and declared to be the Son of God with power according to the Spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead.

Who do YOU say Jesus is?

Who Jesus is to you does not determine His identity. It cannot change who He is.
Who Jesus is to you will determine your identity.
It is our quest to discover our identity that motivates us to discover His.
He is the Christ, the Son of David, the Messiah sent from God to save the world.
Do you believe that Jesus Christ is the only Savior and Lord?
He is the Son of the living God. He is the Son of God. He is God.
Do you believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God?
If you believe none of this or only part of this, then you are completely wrong regardless of whatever other opinion you might have of Him.
If you believe that He is the Christ, the Son of the living God, then you are BLESSED!
You did not arrive at this on your own. God the Father revealed this to you.
If you believe this, then your life will be evidenced by change from the old life to a new life.
Jesus called this being “born again”.
Jesus was raised from the dead by the Spirit of holiness.
You too can be raised from spiritual death through faith by the power of the Holy Spirit.
You can be BORN AGAIN!
