God has been faithful to humanity down the ages culminating in the resurrection of Christ. Human beings appropriate this redemption by living out their baptismal promises, by dying with as well as rising with Christ.

Title

Let us appropriate the faithfulness of God seen in the resurrection of Jesus

Outline

It may or may not be right to say that God is patient, but we must be patient with the faithful God

That is, while from our perspective God is most patient with us, is that really accurate to say of God who is not part of the space-time universe and “sees the end from the beginning?”
But our experience is that God, who is totally faithful to his original purposes and the world he created takes and is taking millennia to work out his saving intentions

Look at our readings

God, as opposed to gods, forms and fills a good world which he puts in the care of human beings, who are there as the image of the great king bringing God’s loving ordering and directing it in right praise
They must multiply in order bring God’s order to the good creation - there is no mention of death
But human beings turn from God and reach to be God, which brings disorder into creation and diminishes right praise
God does not abandon his creation and especially not humanity, but starts a rescue mission, which our readings pick up with Abraham who shows in a type of sacrament that God will establish his new covenant through the sacrifice of a son
Then perhaps 1700 years later comes Moses, who indicates in another pre-sacrament that God will redeem his people through a “lamb” and a dying and rising in the sea
Isaiah adds more 500 years later, then Baruch, then Ezekiel 150 years after Isaiah
And finally He comes, the Redeemer, and we kill him.

The Gospel opens after the death, after a death in continuity with all those scriptures

Then three women, without any expectation, go to the grave to make sure the body was properly buried (that was normally women’s work)
Grief turns to awe when, in the unexpectedly open tomb, they meet a shining being who says, “Do not be amazed; you seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has risen, he is not here; see the place where they laid him. But go, tell his disciples and Peter that he is going before you to Galilee; there you will see him, as he told you.”
That they understood that the prophecies had been fulfilled and, the sacrifice having been made by the Israelite, the Son of David, he now reigned is not at all apparent - that would take time to digest. But it was true.

Paul draws the implications out for us

We have been baptized into Christ as the Israelites were - he has done away with death for us - but, as the Israelites brought Egypt with them, so we are still finishing our dying, drowning the old life with Christ.
We have been raised with Christ to walk in newness of life. And we can so long as we identify with Christ and we most certainly will when our mortal bodies are resurrected. That is the hope that Paul is calling us to.
The dying and rising of Christ is done: he reigns fully, even if our space-time universe does not yet realize it.
We are called to flesh that our in our lives by living the full potential of our baptismal promises.
And this was the night when it all began.

And I will harden the hearts of the Egyptians so that they shall go in after them, and I will get glory over Pharaoh and all his host, his chariots, and his horsemen. And the Egyptians shall know that I am the Lord, when I have gotten glory over Pharaoh, his chariots, and his horsemen.” Then the angel of God who went before the host of Israel moved and went behind them; and the pillar of cloud moved from before them and stood behind them, coming between the host of Egypt and the host of Israel. And there was the cloud and the darkness; and the night passed without one coming near the other all night. Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. We know that our former man was crucified with him so that the sinful body might be destroyed, and we might no longer be enslaved to sin. For he who has died is freed from sin. And when the sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, bought spices, so that they might go and anoint him. And very early on the first day of the week they went to the tomb when the sun had risen. And they were saying to one another, “Who will roll away the stone for us from the door of the tomb?” And looking up, they saw that the stone was rolled back; for it was very large. And entering the tomb, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, dressed in a white robe; and they were amazed. And he said to them, “Do not be amazed; you seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has risen, he is not here; see the place where they laid him. But go, tell his disciples and Peter that he is going before you to Galilee; there you will see him, as he told you.”
