A Living Hope

God Loves to be Trusted!

God loves to be trusted. From the Garden of Eden all the way to the New Heavens and New Earth, God loves to be trusted.
Trust is an interesting thing. It exist when there is an opportunity to NOT trust in something or someone, when the outcome is unknown
Hebrews 11:1
Hebrews 11:1 NASB95
Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.
Example: Assembling the basketball goal for the lake at camp - w/o the instructions...
Now - who benefits from the trust. Well, I feel good if I am found to be trustworthy, and then am entrusted with more. Those who trusted me might find me to be trustworthy and therefore feel confident to trust me with other things that arise in the future.
When it comes to God, He doesn’t NEED our trust. It doesn’t improve Him or add anything to Him. But, it is GREAT for us!
Two reasons:
1.Our trust, or our FAITH, is what we can offer to God to please Him.- Hebrews 11:6
2. Our FAITH grows so that we have confidence to trust the Lord during more hard and harder times.
Let’s look at our passage:

1 Peter 1:1-9

1 Peter 1:1–9 NASB95
Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who reside as aliens, scattered throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, who are chosen according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, by the sanctifying work of the Spirit, to obey Jesus Christ and be sprinkled with His blood: May grace and peace be yours in the fullest measure. Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His great mercy has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to obtain an inheritance which is imperishable and undefiled and will not fade away, reserved in heaven for you, who are protected by the power of God through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. In this you greatly rejoice, even though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been distressed by various trials, so that the proof of your faith, being more precious than gold which is perishable, even though tested by fire, may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ; and though you have not seen Him, you love Him, and though you do not see Him now, but believe in Him, you greatly rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory, obtaining as the outcome of your faith the salvation of your souls.
PRAY
If you could leave ONE idea, ONE concept, One golden nugget, ONE TRUTH to your kids for their entire lives, what would that be?
Be kind?
Work hard?
Be strong?
Save/Give more than you Spend?
What about how and why to TRUST the LORD? If we can do that - the rest is taken care of by the Lord.

Peter’s Intro:

1 Peter 1:1–2 NASB95
Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who reside as aliens, scattered throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, who are chosen according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, by the sanctifying work of the Spirit, to obey Jesus Christ and be sprinkled with His blood: May grace and peace be yours in the fullest measure.

Author is Peter the Apostle of Jesus Christ

Peter
fisherman, probably close in age to Jesus
Jewish - from Bethsaida in Galilee (north shore of Sea of Galilee)
APOSTLE
He walked with Jesus
Saw His LIFE, DEATH, and RESURRECTED BODY
One of the 3 closest to Jesus
Saw Him heal Peter’ mother-in-law
Saw Him raise a girl to life
Saw Him TRANsFIGURED w/ MOSES and ELIJAH
Confessed Jesus as the MESSIAH
Willing initially to fight to the death for Jesus, but denied Him 3 times.
Was restored by Jesus Himself and sent to start the CHURCH
Ended up Martyred in ROME by Nero

Audience is the CHURCH in Asia Minor (Turkey)

To second/third generation Christians!
To exiles/aliens - dispersed. Not just Jewish Christians, but by this time and place in history - all Christians in this place (and now to ALL Christians).
Probable main/common trade route - would be able to get to most of the believers in this part of the world!

Historical Context

AD - 62-64 (Peter martyred in 68 in Rome)
Church had been birthed in Jerusalem, and scattered/dispersed after martyrdom of Stephen (Acts 7-8)
Emperor Nero about to persecute Church in HORRIFIC ways! HARD TIMES ARE COMING!

Teaching Points:

Believers are
Aliens/exiles/sojourners
temporary residents in a foreign place
chosen
according to the FOREKNOWLEDGE OF GOD
not just to know a fact - but a caring knowledge, according to His fatherly care
by the SANCTIFYING WORK OF THE SPIRIT
to OBEY JESUS and BE SPRINKLED WITH HIS BLOOD
Set apart for God (Ex 24:5-8, Heb 9:19)
set apart for the work of God (Ex 29:21, Heb 10:22)
Lev 14:6-7 - cleansing from leprosy (removing the barrier b/w people and God ceremonially - an example of sin)
This is US -
we are citizens of Heaven (Phil 3:20), sojourning on the earth
we are chosen by a loving God
we are set apart by the work of the Holy Spirit
we are to obey Jesus Christ
we are to continually apply His blood for our sin (1 John 1:9)

HOPE in our Heavenly Reward

1 Peter 1:3–5 NASB95
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His great mercy has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to obtain an inheritance which is imperishable and undefiled and will not fade away, reserved in heaven for you, who are protected by the power of God through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.

Teaching Points:

Praise the LORD - WHY?
He has caused us
to be BORN AGAIN
to a LIVING HOPE - on going, ever living and active
through the resurrected JESUS CHRIST - founded on JESUS CHRIST, who beat DEATH!
to an INHERITANCE
imperishable - will not break down/go away
undefiled - pure, perfect
will not fade away - never diminishing
reserved in heaven for you - kept, guarded (also - NOT EARTHLY REWARDS…)
We are
PROTECTED (more accurately you are BEING GUARDED/PROTECTED)
by the POWER of GOD
through FAITH
for a SALVATION
ready to be REVEALED - fully realized
in the LAST TIME - it a time to come

We can find our HOPE and JOY in God’s Word and Work - in the RESURRECTION of JESUS CHRIST

JOY in Present Times

1 Peter 1:6–9 NASB95
In this you greatly rejoice, even though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been distressed by various trials, so that the proof of your faith, being more precious than gold which is perishable, even though tested by fire, may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ; and though you have not seen Him, you love Him, and though you do not see Him now, but believe in Him, you greatly rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory, obtaining as the outcome of your faith the salvation of your souls.

Teaching Points:

In THIS - the LIVING HOPE in the work of God - the RESURRECTION of JESUS CHRIST
GREATLY REJOICE - deep spiritual joy (Mary in Luke 1:46-47)
Owen’s Playdate!

PRESENT TIMES on EARTH

now for a little while - temporary (vs. eternal inheritance)
if/when necessary - not w/o cause or purpose
you have been distressed - grieved, cause pain
trials
hard times in general
disowned by family/friends/community
faith in self is changed to faith in unseen - it is hard at times
persecution from others is brewing and about to rise
WHY????!!!
SO THAT
PROOF of your FAITH - genuineness, evidence
more precious than GOLD
perishable
tested by FIRE
tested by trials
results in
PRAISE
GLORY
HONOR
AT THE REVELATION of JESUS CHRIST - the object of our FAITH
We have TRIALS as a necessary part of our LIFE - a wonderful part of our life so that our FAITH can GROW and GROW and GROW - meaning our RELATIONSHIP with our CREATOR can DEEPEN and DEEPEN and DEEPEN.

PRESENT RELATIONSHIP with JESUS

they/we LOVE HIM
though they/we never saw HIM
they/we believe in HIM - rest our confidence on
though they/we do not see Him NOW - during trials.
GREATLY REJOICE
Joy Inexpressible
Full of Glory
OBTAINING - present participle - happening in the present tense.
the OUTCOME of our FAITH - what is to come - in the present, in part
SALVATION of your SOULS (see 1 Peter 1:5, 1 Peter 1:2)
the ongoing, continual, guaranteed work of God (Phil 1:6).
Liz’s inheritance - our LAND

SO WHAT NOW?

BE JOYFUL because of OUR LIVING HOPE
Realize that we are SOJOURNERS, ALIENS - Temporary Residents.
Realize that we are CHOSEN by the all-powerful, all-knowing, all-LOVING GOD, have been SAVED by JESUS’s BLOOD, and are being SAVED by the WORK of the SPIRIT - guiding us into truth, guarding us from danger, from sin
GOD’s great mercy gives us an ongoing, eternal, LIVING HOPE of what is to come, so that we can have the eternal LIFE NOW - we can have a growing, blossoming, fruitful, wonderful relationship w/ GOD RIGHT NOW!!
Our HOPE of what is to come should lead us to TRUST in God’s word and His work in all present circumstances - both good and grievous.
We can have the confidence to obey Jesus no matter what
BE JOYFUL!!!

If you could leave ONE idea, ONE concept, One golden nugget, ONE TRUTH to your kids for their entire lives, what would that be?

GOD LOVES TO BE TRUSTED?

How are you doing?
Are you modeling your ONE idea/concept/truth for others to see?
Are you rejoicing in joy inexpressible and full of glory? How do you get there?
Obey Jesus Christ and be sprinkled with His blood
trust in the forgiveness - if you have sin, confess it, repent of it, and move on towards obedience.
when hard times are present, realize they are necessary and good opportunities for faith and joy
Have you been set apart by God - are you saved? Do you have any HOPE at all for what is to come?
If not, I’d love to tell you about my Jesus. He is so worthy of your trust.
