What is the H.E.A.R. Method?

It is a way to devotionally read, engage, and respond to Scripture on a daily basis.

STEP 1: PRAY FOR UNDERSTANDING AND INSIGHT

STEP 2: READ THE SCRIPTURAL PASSAGE FOR THAT DAY

STEP 3: HIGHLIGHT THE 1 TO 5 VERSES WITHIN THE READING THAT JUMP OFF THE PAGE

STEP 4: EXPLAIN THE TEXT IN ITS PROPER CONTEXT

Main question: What does it mean?
Overview of the passage
When dealing with a passage of Scripture, you must consider the following:
1. What type of passage am I seeking to explain:
a. Is it a story?
b. Is it direct instructions?
c. Is it poetry or wisdom literature?
2. Where is the passage in regard to redemption history?
a. Is it before the work of Christ?
b. Is it during the life of Christ?
c. Is it after the work of Christ?
3. Are there any words in the passage I don’t know what they mean?
4. List God’s works, ways, and will are shown or inferred in the passage?

STEP 5: APPLY THE TEXT IN TO YOU

Main question: How should this passage affect me?
Questions to think about as you seek to apply the Word of God.
Is there a . . .
STANCE or a wrong way of thinking that you need to change?
TRUTH to believe?
UNRIGHTEOUS ACT to repent of?
DIRECTIVE to obey?
YOKE OF BONDAGE to remove? (Heb 12:1)
ILLUSTRATION to follow?
NEED to pray for?
GUARANTEE to claim?
Note that you may not be able to answer every question.

Because this passage says _________________ , I am challenged to think, believe, desire, or act ______________ .What new insight have you gained?

A spiritual insight is something that produces a new degree of understanding. It lies beyond the literal understanding of a fact or an idea and moves a person into a deeper level of meaning. Many times we read a particular passage of the Bible and think we know it well, and then God surprises us. Suddenly He reveals new meaning. That is a spiritual insight.[]

STEP 6: RESPOND TO THE WORD

[In responding, I am looking for God’s assistance, and I may be looking to praise Him for His works, will, and ways]

A. Respond by asking for God’s help

B. Respond with how will I adjust my life to align it with God’s will after being exposed to the biblical truth found in this passage?
