Romans 9, God’s Sovereignty

v God’s Sovereign Right: The writer points out the sovereignty of God. Sovereignty: Anything that happens, God allows. God is not arbitrary. God may choose as He wills within the parameter of His holy character. He is not looking for my vote.

v God’s divine blender. God defines good.

v Romans 9:4-13: God has chosen Israel. God chose Jacob. God does not choose on human merit. How is it that He loved Jacob? It was God’s choice. We make a choice to love and not based on an emotion. Make a choice to put someone first. [Matthew 5:43-44; Luke 14:26].

v Romans 9:14: A question and then as a conclusion [answer of explanation].

v Willingness to submit to God and how He rules: Do I have a choice to do this? No. We have no control over this.

v God’s way of blessing everybody was through Israel. God’s blessings [are always good] are not direct but through someone He chooses. [Genesis 12; Ephesians 4]. Be a blessing to someone else.

v Spiritual gifts are given by the same God as He wills. God will never violate His character. [I Corinthians 12:8-11].

v Romans 9:14-29: (1) To vindicate God (vv. 14-18) and (2) To rebuke man’s arrogance (vv. 19-29).

v God can be glorified by those who honor Him and by those who dishonor Him. God is in control.

Romans 9:15: Moses--leader of God’s people.

Romans 9:17: Pharaoh--oppressor God’s people.

The Crucifixion. [Matthew 27].
