Ten Greek Words Every Christian Should Know

Notes
Transcript
INTRODUCTION
Comes from the Greek Word hamartia
To err
A bad action, evil deed
To miss the mark
In Greek Tragedy it is a defect within the hero (Protagonist)
A sinning, whether it occurs by omission or commission, in thought and feeling or in speech and action
To fall short
Sin, though it is a small word, is a very terrible word
Sin is terrible because it separates man from God
Isaiah 59:1–2 ESV
Behold, the Lord’s hand is not shortened, that it cannot save, or his ear dull, that it cannot hear; but your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, and your sins have hidden his face from you so that he does not hear.
1 John 1:6–8 ESV
If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
Many in the religious world today try to talk as little about sin as they think they can get away with.
By not calling it what it is we are seeing the deteriorating results of this terrible philosophy in our world today
a. The pre-Eden origin of sin
b. The origin of sin on earth
c. The origin of sin within the individual

The Pre-Eden Origin of Sin

GOD IS NOT THE AUTHOR OF SIN
Satan was not created in God’s image
John 1:1–2 ESV
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God.
Colossians 1:15–17 ESV
He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.
God Created angles with volition. Free Will
Ezekiel 28:14–15 ESV
You were an anointed guardian cherub. I placed you; you were on the holy mountain of God; in the midst of the stones of fire you walked. You were blameless in your ways from the day you were created, till unrighteousness was found in you.
Isaiah 14:13 ESV
You said in your heart, ‘I will ascend to heaven; above the stars of God I will set my throne on high; I will sit on the mount of assembly in the far reaches of the north;
Luke 10:18 ESV
And he said to them, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven.
2 Peter 2:4 ESV
For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but cast them into hell and committed them to chains of gloomy darkness to be kept until the judgment;
What is the destiny of Satan?
Matthew 25:41 ESV
“Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.

THE ORIGIN OF SIN ON EARTH

Read all of Gen 3 where sin had its beginning on earth
Note Satan’s 3-prong approach

1. Sow Doubt in the Mind of Man

Genesis 3:1 ESV
Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?”

2. Imply Unfair Treatment

Genesis 3:4–5 ESV
But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”

3. Avenue of Temptation

Genesis 3:6 ESV
So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate.
1 John 2:16 ESV
For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life—is not from the Father but is from the world.
1) The lust of the flesh – she saw that the tree was good for food
2) The lust of the eye – the tree was pleasant to the eyes
3) The pride of life – it was a tree to be desired to make one wise
4. There were three steps in man’s original fall
a. Man listened to a lie
b. Man believed a lie
c. Man obeyed a lie
5. Why did man sin?
a. He desired freedom from divine restraint; he desired to be independent of God

THE ORIGIN OF SIN WITHIN THE INDIVIDUAL

James 1:13–15 ESV
Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted by God,” for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one. But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.
Romans 3:23 ESV
for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
Joshua 7 Achan
Achan saw, Achan coveted, Achan took and Achan died
