Micah 6:8 KJV 1900
8 He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; And what doth the Lord require of thee, But to do justly, and to love mercy, And to walk humbly with thy God?
Father, as we turn now to the Bible, we ask for your help both in speaking and in hearing, in understanding and in believing, obeying and living in the light of its truth. No mere mortal could ever accomplish any or all of this, but we look to the work of the Holy Spirit, come now Holy Spirit, we pray and do for us what each of us needs. In Jesus Name, Amen.

Introduction

In 2021 we are memorizing Scripture as a Congregation. In January the Scriptures we memorized and that I preached from explored the theme of Salvation, in February we embraced the theme of Love, and now in March we are examinining the theme of Service. Last Sunday was the first Sunday in March and our message was from Romans 12:1.
Romans 12:1 KJV 1900
1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.
In that message we looked at the skeleton of Theological Characteristics of Service. Today we turn to the Old Testament and seek to put skin on the bones as we see how the principles of service are applied to our personal lives.
We find ourselves today in the Book of Micah. Micah is one of the minor prophets. The difference between minor prophets and major prophets is the size of the book they wrote. Micah’s name means, “Who is like Yahweh?” If we want to be like Yahweh, we must find out what the Lord requires. The good news is that he planely tells us in our passage today. Let’s look at the three things God requires of those who will serve him.

Body

Micah 6:8 KJV 1900
8 He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; And what doth the Lord require of thee, But to do justly, and to love mercy, And to walk humbly with thy God?

To do Justly

Mishpat, in Hebrew means Justly or Justice, It is used 450 times in the Bible. It means that following God’s law means that we treat other people with fairness.
God is not a respector of persons.
Zephaniah 3:5 KJV 1900
5 The just Lord is in the midst thereof; he will not do iniquity: Every morning doth he bring his judgment to light, he faileth not; But the unjust knoweth no shame.
Proverbs 21:3 KJV 1900
3 To do justice and judgment Is more acceptable to the Lord than sacrifice.
Romans 13:7 KJV 1900
7 Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honour to whom honour.

Love Mercy

The Hebrew word used here is Chesed. It is used over 250 times in the Hebrew Bible. It means unconditional love, it is equivalent in Greek to Agape. God’s love is selfless, unconditional, and sacrificial.
Romans 9:15 KJV 1900
15 For he saith to Moses, I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.
Micah 7:18 KJV 1900
18 Who is a God like unto thee, that pardoneth iniquity, And passeth by the transgression of the remnant of his heritage? He retaineth not his anger for ever, Because he delighteth in mercy.

Walk Humbly

Hasnea means humble or humility. To humility is not full of yourself, not preoccupied with what you need or want. Humility is sacrificing yourself and your concerns to listen and respond to the needs of others.
James 4:6 KJV 1900
6 But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.
James 4:10 KJV 1900
10 Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.
Philippians 2:8 KJV 1900
8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.

Conclusion

I bet you know these words by now. Included in your bulletin today is a Scripture Memory Verse Card. Take these words with you every day. Put them in your pocket. Never lose them. Hold them in your heart. Meditate on them. Pray with them. Share them with your family and friends.
Micah 6:8 KJV 1900
8 He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; And what doth the Lord require of thee, But to do justly, and to love mercy, And to walk humbly with thy God?
My friends, may we earnestly seek to meet this requirement of service. Please pray with me that we may follow these wonderful guidelines.
