This is no dispassionate theological statement, but an agonized expression of a real sense of alienation, reflecting the full meaning of Jesus’ death as we see in Matt 20:28 where it says.

In other words this wasn’t a mere fulfillment of prophecy, Jesus was experiencing a pain no man has ever suffered.

28 just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”
46 And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?” that is, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?”

It should be noted that this is the only place in the synoptic Gospels that Jesus doesn’t refer to God as His Father.

1. From the very beginning Jesus surrendered the will of the man that He was unto the will of God.

His godliness was perfectly in line with God but His man part was’t… not that he was sinful but that the man was calling Him in another direction.

39 He went a little farther and fell on His face, and prayed, saying, “O My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will.”
All men are called to this type of surrender, Jesus was an example for you and I.

5 Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, 6 who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, 7 but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross.
2. Going to the cross fully satisfied the will of God.

10 Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise Him;
He has put Him to grief.
When You make His soul an offering for sin,
He shall see His seed, He shall prolong His days,
And the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in His hand.

All the sin of all men of all time was placed on Jesus.

The book of Habakkuk begins with a series of questions directed to God. Habakkuk saw the sin and degradation gripping the nation and took his concerns to the Lord.

2 O Lord, how long shall I cry,
And You will not hear?
Even cry out to You, “Violence!”
And You will not save.
3 Why do You show me iniquity,
And cause me to see trouble?
For plundering and violence are before me;
There is strife, and contention arises.
4 Therefore the law is powerless,
And justice never goes forth.
For the wicked surround the righteous;
Therefore perverse judgment proceeds.
God answers Habakkuk and says He will raise up the Chaldeans to punish Israel to which Habakkuk is as equally upset. Why a gentile nation worse than the Jews.

But Habakkuk makes it clear why ion verses 13!
13 You are of purer eyes than to behold evil,
And cannot look on wickedness.
Why do You look on those who deal treacherously,
And hold Your tongue when the wicked devours
A person more righteous than he?
God can never condone, tolerate or look favorably upon sin.

At this very moment He had to look unfavorably at Jesus. He was in a position of rejecting Jesus due to the sin.

It was never that God cant look at sin (That would make it impossible for Him to see the sin of the unrepentant)

It is never that the Holy Spirit cant inhabit a believer if even one sin enters his life for just a moment.

If these were true we would have to have some serious questioning of God’s ability to save and also of His trait of Omnipresence.

C. The agony of the separation.

2 But your iniquities have separated you from your God;
And your sins have hidden His face from you,
So that He will not hear.
He was in agony because never before had The Son been without fellowship with the Father.

1 My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?
Why are You so far from helping Me,
And from the words of My groaning?
