Introduction

In Exodus 33 the Children of Israel is on the brink of an encounter with God. Sin had disqualified them in the sight of God. God has decided that they were not worthy of Him or his promise. But Moses intercedes for them and found a Place of True Worship.
Exodus 33:13–19 ESV
13 Now therefore, if I have found favor in your sight, please show me now your ways, that I may know you in order to find favor in your sight. Consider too that this nation is your people.” 14 And he said, “My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.” 15 And he said to him, “If your presence will not go with me, do not bring us up from here. 16 For how shall it be known that I have found favor in your sight, I and your people? Is it not in your going with us, so that we are distinct, I and your people, from every other people on the face of the earth?” 17 And the Lord said to Moses, “This very thing that you have spoken I will do, for you have found favor in my sight, and I know you by name.” 18 Moses said, “Please show me your glory.” 19 And he said, “I will make all my goodness pass before you and will proclaim before you my name ‘The Lord.’ And I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will show mercy on whom I will show mercy.
Exodus 34:5–8 ESV
5 The Lord descended in the cloud and stood with him there, and proclaimed the name of the Lord. 6 The Lord passed before him and proclaimed, “The Lord, the Lord, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness, 7 keeping steadfast love for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, but who will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children and the children’s children, to the third and the fourth generation.” 8 And Moses quickly bowed his head toward the earth and worshiped.

Something Was Missing

Thier sin had
++Poisoned the relationship with God
++Positioned them for death

Death is Separation

Romans 5:14 ESV
14 Yet death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those whose sinning was not like the transgression of Adam, who was a type of the one who was to come.
To sin is to
++Fall short of
++Miss the mark

God believed that they could be more.

Exodus 19:5–6 ESV
5 Now therefore, if you will indeed obey my voice and keep my covenant, you shall be my treasured possession among all peoples, for all the earth is mine; 6 and you shall be to me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.’ These are the words that you shall speak to the people of Israel.”

What is presence of God

Exodus 33:13 ESV
13 Now therefore, if I have found favor in your sight, please show me now your ways, that I may know you in order to find favor in your sight. Consider too that this nation is your people.”
Moses connected God’s presence with
++Favor in God’s sight
++Insight into God’s ways
++The knowledge of God
Exodus 33:15 ESV
15 And he said to him, “If your presence will not go with me, do not bring us up from here.
Moses connected God’s presence with
Favor in God’s sight
Insight into God’s ways
The knowledge of God
++The visible work of God
We seek God
++in prayers and devotion
++in our worship and praise

What if God’s presence exist apart from our activities?

If God only is present
++In the good times
++When things are going well
++When all my needs are met
++When worship is easy

God becomes subject to us

Acts 17:24–27 ESV
24 The God who made the world and everything in it, being Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in temples made by man, 25 nor is he served by human hands, as though he needed anything, since he himself gives to all mankind life and breath and everything. 26 And he made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined allotted periods and the boundaries of their dwelling place, 27 that they should seek God, and perhaps feel their way toward him and find him. Yet he is actually not far from each one of us,
Romans 13:11 ESV
11 Besides this you know the time, that the hour has come for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed.

We cannot escape from God

Psalm 139:7–12 ESV
7 Where shall I go from your Spirit? Or where shall I flee from your presence? 8 If I ascend to heaven, you are there! If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there! 9 If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, 10 even there your hand shall lead me, and your right hand shall hold me. 11 If I say, “Surely the darkness shall cover me, and the light about me be night,” 12 even the darkness is not dark to you; the night is bright as the day, for darkness is as light with you.

Was the Psamist trying to get away from God?

He seem so say God
++You are always there
++If I draw near you are there
++If I try to get away you are there

Is there any place I can hide from you?

John 3:19–21 ESV
19 And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil. 20 For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed. 21 But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God.”

Where God is light comes

John 1:5 ESV
5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
Light
++Reveals
++Uncovers
++Exposes
1 John 1:5–6 ESV
5 This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. 6 If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth.
God’s Presence isn’t connected
++By what we do
++What we don’t

God is Here

Genesis 3:8 ESV
8 And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden.

++Calling for him
++God is looking
Luke 19:10 ESV

9 For the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to give strong support to those whose heart is blameless toward him. You have done foolishly in this, for from now on you will have wars.”

++To validate his personal favor
God declared I know you by Name
Exodus 33:11 ESV
11 Thus the Lord used to speak to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend. When Moses turned again into the camp, his assistant Joshua the son of Nun, a young man, would not depart from the tent.
