Eschatology: Terms and Vocabulary

Introduction:

This Morning we continue with the 3rd and final message dealing with the pause in judgment between the 6th and 7th trumpets.
We have dealt with the mighty Angel that came down from heaven and the future Temple in Jerusalem.
This brings us to one of the most fascinating accounts in Revelation.
Our text reveals two witnesses who will preach the Gospel and gain the attention of the world.
These will be so hated, that at their death, the world will rejoice.
Let’s see what the Bible reveals about:
Two witnesses in Tribulation.

I. Two Witnesses

Revelation 11:3 NKJV
3 And I will give power to my two witnesses, and they will prophesy one thousand two hundred and sixty days, clothed in sackcloth.”
In the Old Testament the Mosaic Law required two witnesses to validate matters pertaining to Jewish religion.
In the same way, God will send two witnesses to prophesy and validate the world’s sin and blasphemy during the Tribulation Period.
The identities of these witnesses are unknown,
Some say Elijah In Enoch. Others say Elijah and John the Baptist.
Others suggest Elijah and Moses. But most experts agree that one of them Will be Elijah.
The main reason for this agreement is a verse found in the Old Testament:
Malachi 4:5 NKJV
5 Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet Before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord.
3. Elijah and the second witness will stay and prophesy for
1,260 days or three and one-half years.
Experts agree that this will be the first three and one-half years of the Tribulation Period.
The two witnesses will wear sackcloth.
Old Testament prophets wore sackcloth when they were ministering to people who were deeply involved in sin.
Sackcloth also worn as a garment of mourning
As an example Jonah preach to Nineveh and they repented, and put on sackcloth.
Jonah 3:5 NKJV
5 So the people of Nineveh believed God, proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from the greatest to the least of them.

II. Oil and Light

Revelation 11:4 NKJV
4 These are the two olive trees and the two lampstands standing before the God of the earth.
Each witness is represented by one olive tree and one lampstand. It takes to symbols to represent one person
To understand this passage,We need to know what these symbols mean.
The answer to the olive tree is found in Zechariah 4:2-6
Zechariah 4:2–6 NKJV
2 And he said to me, “What do you see?” So I said, “I am looking, and there is a lampstand of solid gold with a bowl on top of it, and on the stand seven lamps with seven pipes to the seven lamps. 3 Two olive trees are by it, one at the right of the bowl and the other at its left.” 4 So I answered and spoke to the angel who talked with me, saying, “What are these, my lord?” 5 Then the angel who talked with me answered and said to me, “Do you not know what these are?” And I said, “No, my lord.” 6 So he answered and said to me: “This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel: ‘Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,’ Says the Lord of hosts.
3. The two olive trees stand by a lampstand and provide oil to the lampstand. This oil represents the Holy Spirit.
The two witnesses will be olive trees because they will be filled with the Holy Spirit.
4. Zachariah 4:11-14 Explains what the lampstands represent
Zechariah 4:11–14 NKJV
11 Then I answered and said to him, “What are these two olive trees—at the right of the lampstand and at its left?” 12 And I further answered and said to him, “What are these two olive branches that drip into the receptacles of the two gold pipes from which the golden oil drains?” 13 Then he answered me and said, “Do you not know what these are? And I said, “No, my lord.” 14 So he said, “These are the two anointed ones, who stand beside the Lord of the whole earth.”
The lampstands hold pots of burning oil that provide light.
The two witnesses will be lampstandsBecause they will provide lightTo a dark world
Now, combined the two symbols
Each witness will be one hour treeFilled with the Holy SpiritIn one lampstandGiven off the light of God.
They will be two witnesses, filled with the Holy Spirit counteracting the forces of darkness in the world.
i. The passage from Zechariah had its first application to two men in Zechariah’s day: Joshua and Zerubbabel. “Just as these two witnesses were raised up to be lampstands or witnesses for God and were empowered by olive oil representing the power of the Holy Spirit, so the two witnesses of Revelation 11 will likewise execute their prophetic office.” (Walvoord)
ii. In the picture from Zechariah, oil lamps were filled directly from olive trees which piped oil right to the lamps. This is a picture of continual, abundant supply. If we will be witnesses, we must first have something to witness—our own personal encounter with Jesus Christ. Then, we must have the power of the Holy Spirit to bring forth the story of what we have witnessed effectively.
Oil Lamps - Olive Trees
God continues to show His grace during the Tribulation Period. He will go to great lengths to reach out to the lost, to offer them blessings, and to be their God.

John 3:16 NKJV
16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
As we bow our heads:
Repeat after me:
1. Lord I believe that Jesus is the son of God, and that He died On the cross for my sins and His resurrection from the dead gives me eternal life. I asked forgiveness of my sins, and I Except Jesus as my Lord and Savior. In his name I Pray, amen.
