Filled With The Spirit

Holy Spirit — God, person,
putting yourself under the control of the Holy Spirit
Paul gave us a command to be always allow the Holy spirit to control us
Ephesians 5:18 LEB
And do not be drunk with wine (in which is dissipation), but be filled by the Spirit,
is the same as
Colossians 3:16 LEB
Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another with all wisdom, with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God,
the more we are meditating on Gods word and applying what we learn
the closer we are to Jesus the more the Holy Spirit has control over us

The Promised Baptism

John the Baptist who came as the one to prepare the people to see their messiah
He prophecied about the Savior
Matthew 3:11 LEB
I baptize you with water for repentance, but the one who comes after me is more powerful than I am, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.
Luke 3:16 LEB
John answered them all, saying, “I baptize you with water, but the one who is more powerful than I am is coming, of whom I am not worthy to untie the strap of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.
What is the fire?
Luke 3:17 LEB
His winnowing shovel is in his hand, to clean out his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his storehouse, but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.”
the fire is eternal judgement
Jesus is promissing the Holy Spirit
John 16:6–7 LEB
But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your hearts. But I tell you the truth, it is better for you that I go away. For if I do not go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.
the Holy Spirit cannot come until Jesus goes away
again at the end of Luke
Luke 24:49 LEB
And behold, I am sending out what was promised by my Father upon you, but you stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.”
Luke is doing a recap of what Jesus said
Acts 1:4–5 LEB
And while he was with them, he commanded them, “Do not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for what was promised by the Father, which you heard about from me. For John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”
Just with the Holy Spirit, NOT with fire
Jesus does the baptizing
Luke 3:16 LEB
John answered them all, saying, “I baptize you with water, but the one who is more powerful than I am is coming, of whom I am not worthy to untie the strap of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.

The Baptism

Acts 2:1 LEB
And when the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in the same place.
feast of Pentecost 50 days from feast of first fruits 3 days from Passover
a planned day on Gods timetable
The Holy Spirit did not come because they were praying for it
they did’t know what to expect, Jesus in the past has been cryptic in His talking
because it was a feast day .... maybe something, maybe that is why they were all together
Acts 2:2 LEB
And suddenly a sound like a violent rushing wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting.
ok this is new
there is no wind but it sounds like a tornado
like a freight train coming through
Acts 2:3 LEB
And divided tongues like fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them.
was not fire, was not a tongue
Luke is getting a description from them. Well it was like ...
Lets look a the baptism of Jesus
Luke 3:21–22 LEB
Now it happened that when all the people were baptized, Jesus also was baptized, and while he was praying, heaven was opened, and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove, and a voice came from heaven, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.”
a voice from Heaven / sound of a tornado
Holy Spirit descended on him like a dove / tongue like fire
this baptism by Jesus in the Holy Spirit, is similar to what happend at Jesus baptism by John
Acts 2:3 LEB
And divided tongues like fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them.
rested on all of them, none were left out
This event was a totally new, spectacular, unique, event ushering in the Church
Acts 2 4
Then they were filled, and spoke in other languages
baptism and filled are 2 diffrrent functions
We can assume all the people in the house were Jews
Samaritans Woman at the well village maybe?
Acts 8:14–17 LEB
Now when the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria had accepted the word of God, they sent Peter and John to them, who went down and prayed for them so that they would receive the Holy Spirit. (For he had not yet fallen on any of them, but they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.) Then they placed their hands on them and they received the Holy Spirit.
Pentecost for Samaritans, now they are a part of the family
The Jewish christians need to know that the Samaritan dogs are part of the family
now the Gentiles need to be brought into the family
they need their Pentecost
God needs to make sure Every one in the Church knows Samaritans, Gentiles, Jews, they are One Body
Acts 10:44–48 LEB
While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell on all those who were listening to the message. And those believers from the circumcision who had accompanied Peter were astonished that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on the Gentiles, for they heard them speaking in tongues and glorifying God. Then Peter said, “Surely no one can withhold the water for these people to be baptized, who have received the Holy Spirit as we also did!” So he ordered that they be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked him to stay for several days.
Peter recalling, telling their story
Acts 11:16–18 LEB
And I remembered the word of the Lord, how he said, ‘John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.’ Therefore if God gave them the same gift as also to us when we believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I to be able to hinder God?” And when they heard these things, they became silent and praised God, saying, “Then God has granted the repentance leading to life to the Gentiles also!”
now we have some at Ephesus religious followers of John
their theology was still Old Testament
they needed their Pentecost, and be brought into the family
Acts 19:1–3 LEB
And it happened that while Apollos was in Corinth, Paul traveled through the inland regions and came to Ephesus and found some disciples. And he said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” And they said to him, “But we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit!” And he said, “Into what then were you baptized?” And they said, “Into the baptism of John.”
some desciples of who? Jesus or John
what do they believe? they live now in Ephesus they may not have even heard of the death of Jesus
being a desciple (learner) of John they knew of Jesus
did Paul bring them the gospel? Yes
Acts 19:4 LEB
And Paul said, “John baptized with a baptism of repentance, telling the people that they should believe in the one who was to come after him—that is, in Jesus.”
they were baptized in preperation of Jesus
when Paul told them about Jesus so they can have faith in Jesus
not just believe about Jesus because just believing about Jesus is not saving
Romans 8:9 LEB
But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you. But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, this person does not belong to him.
the Holy Spirit must reside in someone to be saved.
Acts 19:5–6 LEB
And when they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. And when Paul laid hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them and they began to speak in tongues and to prophesy.
Acts is a trasitional book, there are some things in acts that you dont see in the rest of the New Testament
in the epistles when the church is taught how to conduct itself it does not instruct the importance or the instruction on how to lay hands on some one to recieve the Holy Spirit
you would think that would be important
Exodus and Leviticus are transitional books
we have fire coming from heaven to light the first altar
fire coming from heaven to kill the sons of Aaron
the earth opening up and swallowing Corah, Dathan, and Abriams Family
Here in Acts
we have 4 diffrent people groups
initial believers Jews, Samaritans, Gentiles, Old Testament, holdovers
The Church/ Apostles needed to know that they were all one
and the sign of this is, the Holy Spirit given sign of speaking in another language
Acts 2:38 LEB
And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized, each one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
the first sermon Jews outside of the house with the sound of rushing wind
believe and be baptized, receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit came into them

Next Week

we will continue with this topic
and what others believe about this
