THE MYSTERIOUS JESUS by John MacArthur

Radio Broadcast  by John MacArthur

(November 01, 2005 MESSAGE)

My purpose for using John MacArthur’s tape series is to focus on the First Coming of Christ and Who He is and What He has done in a slightly different way then I usually have done it.  I like the approach John MacArthur is using and wanted to expose the class to this approach.  John MacArthur, at least in the first message in the series, focuses on how confusing it would be to the Prophets, the Elders and the people of Israel as they read and studied and sought to understand what appeared to be conflicts in different texts.  If the prophets were talking about the Messiah, how could He be described as such a person and doing what He was going to do.  God cannot and does not contradict Himself.  He did it deliberately this way and everyone of these passages is fulfilled in Christ as a result of His first and second coming.

Introduction to the Broadcast:

THE JESUS OF CHRISTMAS LOOKING TO THE OLD TESTAMENT AND ANTICIPATING THE ARRIVAL OF JESUS

The reason there is mystery attached to Jesus Christ in the Old Testament is because of the apparent conflict in regard to prophecies.

For example in one place he is said to be the Coming King.  In another place He            is seen as a “man of sorrows aquainted with grief”!

In one place He is seen with ALL THE SAINTS and in another place He is            presented as lonely

In one place He is presented as WORSHIPPED, HONORED AND ADORED        AND REVEARED and in another He is LONELY AND REJECTED.

QUESTION:  HOW CAN IT BE !

HOW CAN ALL THESE CONFUSING, CONTRADICTORY things ever                               come to pass ?

Little wonder that John ( the Baptist ) was confused

Little wonder that the disciples were mistified

Little wonder the people could not make up their mind about Who thie                                           Person really was

You and I really have a privilege

we are able to understand what they could not understand

we could resove what they could not image could be resolved

FIRST PASSAGE:

Micah 5:2 Tells us where the messiah will be born

                                    What ruler?

                                    God-Man paradox

He has been around since eternity past

                                    Bethlehem

King James Version (KJV)

2But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting.

New King James Version (NKJV)

The Coming Messiah

2 “ But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah,
Though you are little among the thousands of Judah,
Yet out of you shall come forth to Me
The One to be Ruler in Israel,
Whose goings forth are from of old,
      From everlasting.”

New American Standard Bible (NASB)

2"But as for (A)you, Bethlehem Ephrathah,
Too little to be among the clans of Judah,
From (B)you One will go forth for Me to be (C)ruler in Israel
His goings forth are (D)from long ago,
         From the days of eternity."

C.    Micah 5:2 : Jer 30:21; Zech 9:9

D.    Micah 5:2 : Ps 102:25; Prov 8:22, 23

Hosea 11:1The messiah would come from that nation

Israel was called out of Egypt

The Son/Messiah would be called out of Egypt

So in one passage the Scripture says He will be coming from Bethlehem                          and another says He will be coming out of Egypt.

Isaiah 11:1

There shall come from forth a “shoot” or a “sprout”/

                                                Nezar             “branch” Growing

KJV     “And there shall come forth

“a rod out of the stem of Jesse and

a Branch shall grow out of his roots:”

Isaiah 11:1 (New American Standard Bible)

Isaiah 11

Righteous Reign of the Branch

    1Then a (A)shoot ( Poter ) will spring from the (B)stem of Jesse,
And a (C)branch (Nezer “sprout ) from (D)his roots will bear fruit.

B.     Isaiah 11:1 : Is 9:7; 11:10; Acts 13:23

C.    Isaiah 11:1 : Is 6:13; Jer 23:5; Zech 3:8

D.    Isaiah 11:1 : Rev 5:5; 22:16

You have Bethlehem, Egypt and Nazareth ( Nezer ).

The complexity of all these prophecies guarantee that they cannot be counterfeited …!!!

1 Peter 1:9-12 ( I added this one )

Matthew 2:1

            Jesus was born in Bethlehem

            Jesus is ruler

2:13    Flee into Egypt – Out of Egypt have I called my son

            2:23    He shall be called a Nazarene ( a sprout )

QUESTION:  HOW COULD ONE PERSON BE ALL THESE THINGS?

ANSWER:     Jesus did fulfill all of these things.

Jeremiah 22:29-30     The curse on Jechoniah – no kings from his seed / line

                                                ( Sometimes called Coniah )

                                                Line of Judah

                                                No kings in Israel

Matthew 1:6-11              Jeconiah carried away into Babylon

Joseph would have been the king if it was not for the curse                                                  of Jeconiah

Luke 3:31           This is the geneology of Mary

son of nathan, son of David

Mary was a descendant of David

                                    She had royal blood

Matthew 1:16-17

What is the problem  that seems impossible to solve?

If you come out of the line of Jeconiah, you cannot take your septer.  How are we           going to get a king out of this deal.  I’ll tell you how, Luke, chapter 3 and watch        how the N.T. resolves this problem.   The kingly line came through David through          his son Solomon, right?  We just saw it.

            How the mystery is solved:

If Jesus would have been born of the seed of Joseph He never could have                      taken the Throne, becauese Joseph was not His physical father He was                           not cursed but

Daniel  2:34-35 ( 2:44-45 )

Isaiah 8:14

Isaiah 28:16                     A sure foundation

Psalm 118:22     Rejected Stone

The mystery in the mind of the reader is how can One Person be all these kinds of stones …. ???

            A precious stone

            A cornerstone

            A cherished stone

            A tested stone

            A sure foundation

            A smiting stone

            A smashing stone

            A crushing stone

            A rock of offense

            A stumbling stone

How can all this be ?

Peter resolves it.  It can only be resolved in Jesus Christ.

1 Peter 2:6-8

You cannot understand Jesus without reading the O.T. with the N.T.

            ( My Passage:  Luke 24:25-50 2 Tim. 3:14-15 )

Genesis 49:9

            Judah was a lion

The Messiah would come out of Judah

Thus the Messiah would be a lion

                        Fierce

                        Powerful

                        Deadly

The last prophet of the Old Testament was John the Baptist

John pointed to the Messiah and said

“Behold the Lamb of God”  ( John 1:36 )

How can He be a Lion and a Lamb ?

Revelation 5:5

            King James Version (KJV)

Rev. 5:5And one of the elders saith unto me, Weep not: behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, hath prevailed to open the book, and to loose the seven seals thereof.

            New King James Version (NKJV)

Rev. 5:5 But one of the elders said to me, “Do not weep. Behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has prevailed to open the scroll and to loose[a] its seven seals.”

            New American Standard Bible (NASB)

Rev. 5:5and one of the elders said to me, "Stop weeping; behold, the (A)Lion that is (B)from the tribe of Judah, the (C)Root of David, has overcome so as to open the book and its seven seals."
