2 Timothy 4:1-5 Preach the Word

2 Timothy 4:1–5 ESV
1 I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingdom: 2 preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching. 3 For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, 4 and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths. 5 As for you, always be sober-minded, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.
I have shared with you (even last week) about the importance of reading your bible!
This passage adds the importance of guarding the Word of God as sacred and authoritative!!!
Letter is to Paul’s young protege, Timothy
Still good instruction for all of us.
The Charge
2 Timothy 4:1 ESV
1 I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingdom:
Charge from God’s Authority
Paul, as a good shepherd, is being a spokesperson for God.
I charge you (on behalf of)...
We are in the presence of the Living God
As Christians we proclaim Jesus as Lord
Jesus rules over His Kingdom
Charge from God’s Activity
He will Judge
He will appear
this life IS going somewhere.
He will (continue to) rule over His millennial kingdom.
The Appeal
2 Timothy 4:2 ESV
2 preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching.
Preach the Word!!!!
Task of EVERY MINISTRY
The Word = The Word of God
Jerry Springer Clip: will this man go to heaven.
Jewish Rabbi, Catholic Priest, Baptist Preacher
Jerry focuses his sights on the preacher
Pointing to the Rabbi, Will this man go to heaven when he dies”
“No” says the preacher.
Jerry flew hot “You can’t know that!”
What if the preacher just said, according the Bible I regard as the authoritative word of God… (then give his answer.”
...(cont’d) It’s about having that kind of attitude to scripture
Be ready (always) When you expect it and when you don’t.
Reprove - reprimand
Rebuke - reprimand SHARPLY
exhort - encourage strongly
We have got to be willing to correct sinful behavior and false teaching.
People will hear something (maybe their whole life) and just believe it.
…with complete patience and teaching.
Discipline not punishment.
People will sin (sin big) but we always ask ourselves, “will me response help them grow or just beat them down”
The Reason
2 Timothy 4:3 ESV
3 For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions,
A time is coming...
Study of Eschatology perspectives)
What will be the signs
what will life be like.
People will not endure sound teaching, ...
“Endure” - to permit, especially in sense of superior to inferior
They will place themselves as superior to God’s word, and reject it!
Passion Translation - Brian Simmons
show meaning instead of words used
…accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions.
Notice the focal point is passion (feel good)
Keep in mind:
Success will be by popularity.
Teachers are NOT ONLY pastors.
ENFLUENCERS - Youtube. Tic-Tok, authors, actors, celebrities...
Why do I like what they say?
Previous letter Paul instruct timothy with this...
1 Timothy 5:17 ESV
17 Let the elders who rule well be considered worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in preaching and teaching.
Honor your leader (doubly so)
Especially....
Accountability of our leaders should be expected. Especially those who teach!!!!
And you need to hold those same accountability to those you listen to.
Because this is what is going to happen...
2 Timothy 4:4 ESV
4 and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths.
People will leave the church to follow after false teaching
Teaching that is derives from good story telling, passionate/ provocative speakers.
