1. The church is the house of God and pillar and ground of the truth.
1 Timothy 3:14–15 NKJV
14 These things I write to you, though I hope to come to you shortly; 15 but if I am delayed, I write so that you may know how you ought to conduct yourself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.
A. This is why it is so important that we understand the church that Jesus built.
2. Because the church is the pillar and ground of the truth one must get into the Word to understand it.
John 17:17 NKJV
17 Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth.
A. The church is sanctified by the word.
1. It is made up of people that have sanctified themselves for service to God.
1 Peter 2:9–10 NKJV
9 But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; 10 who once were not a people but are now the people of God, who had not obtained mercy but now have obtained mercy.
2. This is another reason that it so important that we understand the church that Jesus built.
1. The church that Jesus built belongs to Jesus.
Acts 20:28 NKJV
28 Therefore take heed to yourselves and to all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood.
A. What does this mean in the understanding of the Church that Jesus built.
1. Jesus is head of the church.
Ephesians 1:22 NKJV
22 And He put all things under His feet, and gave Him to be head over all things to the church,
2. He has the preeminence in all things.
Colossians 1:18 NKJV
18 And He is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things He may have the preeminence.
A. This gives Him the right to organize the leadership of the church.
1. Elders, deacons and members.
Philippians 1:1 NKJV
1 Paul and Timothy, bondservants of Jesus Christ, To all the saints in Christ Jesus who are in Philippi, with the bishops and deacons:
B. This gives Him the right to assign responsibilities to equip the church for the work of the ministry.
1. Apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors and teachers.
Ephesians 4:11–12 NKJV
11 And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, 12 for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ,
C. This gives Him the right to decide how the church is to worship.
Colossians 3:17 NKJV
17 And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.
D. This give Him the right to decide how the church is to live.
Romans 12:1–2 NKJV
1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. 2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.
2. The church that Jesus built is made up of people.
1 Peter 2:4–5 NKJV
4 Coming to Him as to a living stone, rejected indeed by men, but chosen by God and precious, 5 you also, as living stones, are being built up a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.
A. His Church is made up of flawed people.
1 John 1:8 NKJV
8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
B. His church is to learn to work together even through our faults.
Romans 15:1–2 NKJV
1 We then who are strong ought to bear with the scruples of the weak, and not to please ourselves. 2 Let each of us please his neighbor for his good, leading to edification.
1. In the church that Jesus built there are to be no divisions.
1 Corinthians 1:10 NKJV
10 Now I plead with you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment.
2. In the church that Jesus built we are to understand He is faithful.
Hebrews 10:23 NKJV
23 Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful.
3. In the church that Jesus built we are to consider one another in order to stir up love and good works.
Hebrews 10:24 NKJV
24 And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works,
4. In the church that Jesus built He requires faithfulness in attendance.
Hebrews 10:25 NKJV
25 not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching.
3. The church Jesus built is made up of the saved.
Acts 2:47 NKJV
47 praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved.
A. The saved are made up of the obedient.
Hebrews 5:9 NKJV
9 And having been perfected, He became the author of eternal salvation to all who obey Him,
B. The Church Jesus built is made up only of those that have been obedient to the gospel.
1 Thessalonians 1:8–10 NKJV
8 For from you the word of the Lord has sounded forth, not only in Macedonia and Achaia, but also in every place. Your faith toward God has gone out, so that we do not need to say anything. 9 For they themselves declare concerning us what manner of entry we had to you, and how you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God, 10 and to wait for His Son from heaven, whom He raised from the dead, even Jesus who delivers us from the wrath to come.
1. The church that Jesus built will not be conquered by the soldiers of the Satan.
Matthew 16:18 NKJV
18 And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.
A. Let us as members of the church that Jesus built live in such a way as to demonstrate we believe God has given us the victory in Christ.
1 Corinthians 15:57–58 NKJV
57 But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. 58 Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.
1. Then we will begin to understand the church that Jesus built.
