DAMAGE CONTROL

Genesis 27:41–45 ESV
41 Now Esau hated Jacob because of the blessing with which his father had blessed him, and Esau said to himself, “The days of mourning for my father are approaching; then I will kill my brother Jacob.” 42 But the words of Esau her older son were told to Rebekah. So she sent and called Jacob her younger son and said to him, “Behold, your brother Esau comforts himself about you by planning to kill you. 43 Now therefore, my son, obey my voice. Arise, flee to Laban my brother in Haran 44 and stay with him a while, until your brother’s fury turns away— 45 until your brother’s anger turns away from you, and he forgets what you have done to him. Then I will send and bring you from there. Why should I be bereft of you both in one day?”
“SHE SENT” JACOB WAS PROBABLY IN HIDING
GOOD INTENTIONS ARE NEVER ENOUGH. RACHEL IS TRYING TO SAVE JACOB; SHE SENDS HIM AWAY AND NEVER SEES HIM AGAIN.
GOOD INTENTIONS DON’T JUSTIFY WRONG BEHAVIOR.
Genesis 27:46–28:5 ESV
46 Then Rebekah said to Isaac, “I loathe my life because of the Hittite women. If Jacob marries one of the Hittite women like these, one of the women of the land, what good will my life be to me?” 1 Then Isaac called Jacob and blessed him and directed him, “You must not take a wife from the Canaanite women. 2 Arise, go to Paddan-aram to the house of Bethuel your mother’s father, and take as your wife from there one of the daughters of Laban your mother’s brother. 3 God Almighty bless you and make you fruitful and multiply you, that you may become a company of peoples. 4 May he give the blessing of Abraham to you and to your offspring with you, that you may take possession of the land of your sojournings that God gave to Abraham!” 5 Thus Isaac sent Jacob away. And he went to Paddan-aram, to Laban, the son of Bethuel the Aramean, the brother of Rebekah, Jacob’s and Esau’s mother.
JACOB HAS RECEIVED THE BIRTHRIGHT, THE PATRIARCHAL BLESSING AND NOW THE COVENANTAL BLESSING.
THE NEED TO FIND A WIFE OUTSIDE OF THE CANAANITE WOMEN TRACES BACK TO NOAH. REMEMBER IN GENESIS 9 WHEN HAM SINS AGAINST NOAH HE IS CANAAN IS CURSED. HIS DESCENDANTS ARE TO BE SERVANTS OF HIS BROTHERS.
NOW JACOB MAKES THE OPPOSITE JOURNEY OF ABRAHAM - AND ON HIS RETURN WILL FOLLOW IN HIS FOOTSTEPS!
Genesis 28:6–9 ESV
6 Now Esau saw that Isaac had blessed Jacob and sent him away to Paddan-aram to take a wife from there, and that as he blessed him he directed him, “You must not take a wife from the Canaanite women,” 7 and that Jacob had obeyed his father and his mother and gone to Paddan-aram. 8 So when Esau saw that the Canaanite women did not please Isaac his father, 9 Esau went to Ishmael and took as his wife, besides the wives he had, Mahalath the daughter of Ishmael, Abraham’s son, the sister of Nebaioth.
NOW ESAU JUMPS ON THE GOOD INTENTIONS BANDWAGON. HE SEES THAT HIS MARRIAGES HAVE HURT HIS FATHER SO HE GETS A WIFE THAT IS A DESCENDANT OF SHEM.
BUT! ISHMAEL? REALLY?
Psalm 83:1–8 ESV
1 O God, do not keep silence; do not hold your peace or be still, O God! 2 For behold, your enemies make an uproar; those who hate you have raised their heads. 3 They lay crafty plans against your people; they consult together against your treasured ones. 4 They say, “Come, let us wipe them out as a nation; let the name of Israel be remembered no more!” 5 For they conspire with one accord; against you they make a covenant— 6 the tents of Edom and the Ishmaelites, Moab and the Hagrites, 7 Gebal and Ammon and Amalek, Philistia with the inhabitants of Tyre; 8 Asshur also has joined them; they are the strong arm of the children of Lot. WHAT DO WE DO WITH THIS?

CHECK OUR HEART.
Jeremiah 17:9 ESV
9 The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?
Proverbs 12:20 ESV
20 Deceit is in the heart of those who devise evil, but those who plan peace have joy.
Psalm 139:23–24 ESV
23 Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! 24 And see if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting!
Psalm 51:10 ESV
10 Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.
IN CHRIST WE ARE MADE NEW! HE IS THE ONLY ONE WHO DID RIGHT AND HE IS THE ONLY ONE WHO CAN MAKE US RIGHT.
THINK OF JESUS IN THE GARDEN. HIS DESIRE…HIS GOOD INTENTIONS TO AVOID THE CUP HE WAS ASKED TO DRINK…AND YET HIS SUBMISSION TO THE FATHER…NOT MY WILL BUT YOURS BE DONE!
Ephesians 4:17–32 ESV
17 Now this I say and testify in the Lord, that you must no longer walk as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their minds. 18 They are darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, due to their hardness of heart. 19 They have become callous and have given themselves up to sensuality, greedy to practice every kind of impurity. 20 But that is not the way you learned Christ!— 21 assuming that you have heard about him and were taught in him, as the truth is in Jesus, 22 to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, 23 and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, 24 and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness. 25 Therefore, having put away falsehood, let each one of you speak the truth with his neighbor, for we are members one of another. 26 Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, 27 and give no opportunity to the devil. 28 Let the thief no longer steal, but rather let him labor, doing honest work with his own hands, so that he may have something to share with anyone in need. 29 Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear. 30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 31 Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. 32 Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.
