Ø The Holy Spirit Is—
I. A Helper
16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, 17 even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you. John 14:16-17 ESV
U As a helper, The Holy Spirit—
A. Comforts
18 “I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. 19 Yet a little while and the world will see me no more, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. John 14:18-19 ESV
§ Jesus reassured His disciples that he was not leaving them alone,
§ The Holy Spirit would be a source of comfort and strength for the disciples throughout their life
B. Counsels
13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. John 16:13 ESV
§ Some talk about our conscience but I believe that our conscience is the Holy Spirt of God giving guidance
§ The Holy Spirit speaks and reveals truth to believers
C. The Holy Spirit intercedes
26 Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. 27 And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. Romans 8:26-27 ESV
§ The Holy Spirit is our advocate—who pleads our cause before the Father
D. The Holy Spirit indwells
19 Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, 20 for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 ESV
§ In the Old Testament the Holy Spirit would come upon, but in the New Testament He lives in believers
§ By the Holy Spirit Christ takes up permanent residence in us
§ This is why we this warning given in 1 Corinthians 6:19-20
