ME:
Recap last weeks (Colossians 1:1–14 (ESV)
1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and Timothy our brother,
2 To the saints and faithful brothers in Christ at Colossae: Grace to you and peace from God our Father.
3 We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you,
4 since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love that you have for all the saints,
5 because of the hope laid up for you in heaven. Of this you have heard before in the word of the truth, the gospel,
6 which has come to you, as indeed in the whole world it is bearing fruit and increasing—as it also does among you, since the day you heard it and understood the grace of God in truth,
7 just as you learned it from Epaphras our beloved fellow servant. He is a faithful minister of Christ on your behalf
8 and has made known to us your love in the Spirit.
9 And so, from the day we heard, we have not ceased to pray for you, asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding,
10 so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him: bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God;
11 being strengthened with all power, according to his glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy;
12 giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in light.
13 He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son,
14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.
Reputations Precedes Us!
Paul and timothy “heard”
They “Thanks God” for what they were hearing.
(3-8) tells us what they heard ....
Faith - Hope - Love
Heard about their position in Christ (Son’s/Daughter’s of the most High God)
We asked the question, “What are people hearing about this church? About Us individually?”
Verse 9 is where we are going to spend the remainder of our time together today.
Vs 9 picks up from Vs 4
4 since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love that you have for all the saints
9 And so, from the day we heard, we have not ceased to pray for you, asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding,
Transition Statement: Do you remember a time in your life where you were so excited about something or someone?
WE:
Not talking about a celebrity of sort ....
Mr. or Mrs. Right! (Could wait to tell someone about them)
Finding out your pregnant - During the pregnancy waiting to meet you child (Could wait to tell someone about them)
Exciting news of a Job/Raise/Promotion (Could wait to tell someone about them)
Excited about what God was doing in your life you had to tell others. (Could wait to tell someone about them)
YOU HAD TO PRAISE THE LORD FOR IT
Transition Statement: This is what we find in Vs 9!
GOD:
Paul and Timothy are elated (PUMPED) about what they are hearing about this church.
Here is why we can come to that conclusion .....
(9b) “We have not ceased to pray for you ....”
The word “ceased” (Pauo - POW-VO)
Stop or caused to stop
Put “OU” (Not) in front of it....
Not Stop or Not caused to stop
Nothing is stopping them from “Praying” (Describing the main subject)
Along with “Asking” (also describing the main subject)
In todays culture we believe Praying and asking are the same thing. (THEY ARE NOT)
Paul uses the word (AITEO) for asking it comes with the idea of .....
Urgency / almost to a point of demanding
What are they asking with urgency, almost with this sense of demanding .....
They be “FILLED” (Active, never completed or filled)
With God’s WILL! (His intention)
In all Spiritual Wisdom (Sophia - Understanding)
In all Spiritual Understanding (Synesis - application of understanding)
In Vs 9 this is what Paul and Timothy are doing .....
They are not ceasing to ask but urgently (almost to a point of demanding) God to fill the Saints (continually) with spiritual wisdom (understanding God’s Will) and spiritual application of God’s will (Synesis).
Transition Statement: So what is this mean for us today? How does this affect me?
YOU:
Positioning ourselves in Christ (Faith, Hope, and Love)
(1 Corinthians 13:13 (ESV)13 So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.
This positions ourselves to receive Spiritual Wisdom and Spiritual Understanding
Understanding God’s WILL and the application of His WILL.
Someone might say, “I know that I am suppose to love all people but I just don’t know how to love some of them.”
You have the Spiritual “Sophia” but you don’t have the Spiritual “Synesis.”
The reason you might not know HOW TO is because you are not in a position to understand.
Your lacking in your FAITH, LOVE, HOPE!
Transition Statement: What is your spiritual position this morning?
WE:
FAITH .... LOVE ..... HOPE?
Are you in Position or are you deficient in these areas?
The reason you might not be receiving Spiritual Wisdom and Understanding is because of your ....
..... FAITH is lacking!
..... LOVE is shrinking!
..... HOPE is dissipating!
