Last Lord’s Day we looked at this account of Cain and Abel and focused in on Cain’s sin. We said that Cain’s sin was part of an unbreakable chain that afflicts us even today. Cain’s problem was not that he was gardener and that he failed to bring to bloody offering. Cain’s problem was that he began with a wrong view of God. Cain held to a flawed theology. And this theology, we saw, led him to Worship God, not in the way that God requires, but in the way that he wanted. From Cain’s flawed theology, a flawed worship emerged. And from Cain’s flawed worship, a flawed ethics emerged. And this is the unbreakable chain. Our theology determines our worship and our worship determines our ethics. We saw that Cain’s sin was evident in the words that he spoke. Am I brother’s keeper?, he asks in verse 9. This indicates his derailed ethics. And in verse 13, he says that he will hide from the presence of the Lord. This indicates the ultimate result of his theology. Any time you hold a faulty theology, not only will you worship in a way that satisfies your own ego and not only will you suffered from marred relationships with other, but ultimately you will find yourself outside of the presence of God.
Tonight we are going to focus on Abel. Curiously, in this whole account Abel does not speak. But even though Abel doesn’t speak, his blood does - in fact it cries out

The passage that we read in Hebrews refers to this speaking blood and indicates to us its importance.
The Christian Faith is founded and sustained on blood. The liberal Baptist preacher Harry Emerson Fosdick preached a famous sermon at Riverside Church in New York City titled “Shall Fundamentalism win?” in 1922. In this sermon, Fosdick characterized historic Christianity as a “slaughterhouse religion” because of its emphasis on blood. Indeed, whenever Christianity is attacked, its emphasis on blood is always the first target. Mary Baker Eddy, the founder of Christian Science, for example also criticized the Christian focus on blood. She said, “the blood of Christ was no more effective on the cross than when it flowed through his body as he did good deeds.”
The opponents of Christianity hate the blood because blood speaks. Blood speaks crying out for justice, and blood speaks for the remission of sin. The author of Hebrews tells us that Abel’s blood shed on the ground was a prefiguration of Christ’s blood shed on the cross. So, tonight we will consider this Scriptural comparison in order to better apply this passage in our lives.

The blood of Abel and the blood of Christ prevail. The blood is not simply absorbed into the ground never to be known of again.
