Pray that the Lord’s name will be honored; ask God to bring a fresh conviction against profanity and depravity.

4.Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.

Pray that God’s people will set an example for this nation by honoring the Lord through a Sabbath rest.

5.Honor thy father and they mother.

Intercede that the family will be restored to its rightful place of honor and respect as God designed.

6.Thou shall not kill.

Pray that the culture of death would be broken; pray for a culture of life to reign.

7.Thou shall not commit adultery.

Intercede for marriages in this land; ask God to restore the sanctity of the marriage bond.

8.Thou shall not steal.

Pray that personal property would be respected; that both personal and governmental theft would end.  Pray that Christians would honor the Lord with their time and not steal from those who employee them.

9.Thou shall not bear false witness against thy neighbor.

Intercede for a day when integrity and concern for our fellow man would cause us to honor our neighbors. Pray that we would learn to speak only the truth.

10.Thou shall not covet.

Ask God to help us to be satisfied and content with what He provides and not envy those who have more. Pray that men and women would discover their true purpose and contentment in serving the Lord.

PRAYER

I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all me; For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.  For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior; Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.  For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time.  Whereunto I am ordained a preacher, and an apostle, (I speak the truth in Christ, and lie not;) a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and verity.  I will therefore that men pray everywhere, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting.  I Timothy 2:1-8

The first Duty of the Church: Prayer

      Pray for all men

By supplication –prayers that focus on special needs in intense and deep brokenness before                                       God in behalf of others

By prayers – special times of prayer set aside to worship God and pray for others

By intercession –bold praying, standing before God on behalf of others

By thanksgiving – thank God for hearing and answering

      Pray for civil authorities

That we may lead quiet & peaceable lives

That we may lead godly & honest lives

Pray for all men to be saved

God is our Savior and wills for all men to be saved

There is only one God, not many gods of men

There is only one Mediator who can save us

Christ is the ransom for all

Pray everywhere & pray in the right spirit

Pray “lifting up holy hands” means do not pray with unconfessed sin in your life

Pray without anger or feelings in your heart against someone else

                  Pray without doubting

Prayer is the gateway to the power of God.

Pray to the Father in Heaven

This, then, is how you should pray:  “Our Father in heaven” Matthew 6:9

Pray in Jesus Name

Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life.  No one comes to the Father except through me.” John 14:6

For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus. I Timothy 2:5

And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Son may bring glory to the Father.  You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.  John 14:13-14

The Holy Spirit helps us when we pray

In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weaknesses.  We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the spirit himself intercedes for us Romans 8:26

Praise and honor God in your prayer

Hallowed be your name Matthew 6:9

Pray in God’s will with confidence

Your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Matthew 6:10

I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.  This is the confidence we have in approaching God:  that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.  And if we know that he hears us – whatever we ask –we know that we have what we asked of him. I John 5:13-15

Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed.  The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.  James 5:16

Effectual –“the effect produced in the praying person bringing him into line with the will of God” Praying in the will of God means being conformed to the will of God.

Answer me when I call to you, O my righteous God.  Give me relief from my distress; be merciful to me and hear my prayer. Psalm 4:1

So then, those who suffer according to God’s will should commit themselves to their faithful Creator and continue to do good. I Peter 4:19

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. Romans 8:28

But he knows the way that I take when he has tested me, I will come forth as gold. Job 24:13

Pray in agreement.

They all joined together constantly in prayer, along with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers. Acts 1:14

“Again, I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything you ask for, it will be done for you by my Father in heaven.  For where two or three come together in my name, there am I with them.”  Matthew 18: 19-29

Do not use vain repetition.

“And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words.  Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.”  Matthew 6:7

Confess your sin.

Ask God to bring to your mind any sin or sins that you have not confessed and be specific in your confession to Him.

      Superior attitude

Divided motives – ego self fulfillment, self satisfaction, self worth

        Pretense insincere

        Pride

        Unforgiveness, hatred, bitterness

If I had cherished sin in my heart, the Lord would not have listened.  Psalm 66:18

For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous and his ears are attentive to their prayer, but the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.  I Peter 3:12

Surely the arm of the LORD is not too short to save, nor his ear too dull to hear.  But your iniquities have separated you from your God; your sins have hidden his face from you, so that he will not hear. Isaiah 59:1-2

Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.  Matthew 6:12

Pray without ceasing  I Thessalonians 5:17

Specific things to pray for.

      Matthew 6:11-13

 Daily bread

 Forgiveness as we forgive others

Deliverance from evil, and not to be lead into temptation

Romans 10:1 Pray for the lost to be saved

James 1:5  Pray for spiritual wisdom

James 5:16 Pray for the sick

Psalms 139:23,24 Pray for God to show you your sin

Suggested guidelines for praying in a group.

1.      Pray subject by subject. (the lost, the government, the church leaders, the sick, etc.)

2.      Pray short specific prayers (rather than save the lost, pray Lord save Moses)

3.      Pray simple prayers  (God already knows your heart)

4.      Pray specific requests.

5.      Allow time for silent periods as the Spirit leads; do not feel that someone always has to be praying out loud.

6.      Pray in small groups

7.      As one person prays out loud, the others in the group pray silently in agreement for the same requests.
