Psalm 51:10–13 ESV
10 Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. 11 Cast me not away from your presence, and take not your Holy Spirit from me. 12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit. 13 Then I will teach transgressors your ways, and sinners will return to you.
In light if his horrible sin and God’s loving forgiveness...
David is broken.
David Pleads to God ...
… for a Renewed HEART
Psalm 51:10 ESV
10 Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.
CREATE in me a clean heart
Implication - my heart is not yet clean.
DAVID recognizes he is a sinner in need of a savior!!!!
RENEW a right spirit within me.
This more than just “Correct my actions
This is about REAL change.
God deal with the very core of who I am.
Our relationship is NOT about
Better Habits or Kinder Words
Those are just OUTWARD EVIDENCE of what has happened on a SPIRITUAL LEVEL
MY SIN CAME FROM A SINFUL SPIRIT AND IT IS THERE THAT I NEED YOUR RESTORATION GOD
When you sin in your heart, you need to deal with it.
(Don’t have to wait until it’s open sin)
Told off the boss.
I told off my boss
Co-workers cheered me on.
I apologized but did I deal with where it came from (pride, arrogance)
Lord, Create in me a clean heart & renew a right spirit within me...
… for Preservation of their Relationship
Psalm 51:11 ESV
11 Cast me not away from your presence, and take not your Holy Spirit from me.
The Holy Spirit in the Old Testament???
Could be about God removing His calling in King David.
Like He did with Saul.
God don’t remove your calling from me.
I feel like it’s more personal than that.
David is broken
He knows he doesn’t deserve God love.
So knows he NEEDS God’s grace
CAST ME NOT away from your presence,”
Do not reject me because of my sin-fullness
When you fall into sin, do you feel this separation from God.
Sometimes it may feel like you are Cain.
Driven away to be a wonderer.
God is perfect and holy
He cannot tolerate my sin.
I created this crossroad for myself.
TAKE NOT your your Holy Sprit from me,”
Do not leave me in my sin.
Removing God the Spirit (Holy Spirit) is God removing Himself from you.
This part of the prayer address the brokenness you feel in your relationship with God because of sin.
God preserve our relationship. Don’t cast me out our take your spirit from me...
...for Restoration of Authentic Joy
Psalm 51:12 ESV
12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit.
Restore to me the Joy
There is a weird phenomenon that happens over time.
The Honeymoon phase of our relationship with God wears off.
And Joy fades.
King David is pleading with God to RESTORE that joy in his life.
“JOY OF YOUR SALVATION”
The INCOMPARABLE Joy that you feel when you first accept Jesus as your Lord and Savior.
A Joy that’s with PASSION
A Joy that filled with LOVE
A Joy thats filled with PEACE
I don’t want to just know God is with me.
I want to feel His presence.
Uphold me with a willing Spirit
When you are caught up in that kind of Joy,
Nothing about your relationship with God is a burden.
Psalms 119:15-16
I will meditate on your precepts
and fix my eyes on your ways.
I will delight in your statutes;
I will not forget your word.
Responds with Faithful Service
Psalm 51:13 ESV
13 Then I will teach transgressors your ways, and sinners will return to you.
“Then” : this is a RESPONSE to the life change that YOU have recieved.
Think ROMANS 12:1
“…present you bodies as a living sacrifice…which is your spiritual worship.”
We are not content with simply RECEIVING forgiveness.
OUR DESIRE is to share what we have!
Most power testimony of God’s forgiving nature is from one who has been forgiven.
I will teach TRANSGRESSORS your ways
Something happens when you see yourself as a sinner in need of a savior.
You see the connection between you and the “outside world”
Your CONDEMNATION is replaced with COMPASSION.
FINAL NOTES on this verse!
We covered the text by HIGHLIGHTING THE VERBS...
Create, Renew, Cast not, Take not, Restore, Uphold...
ALL of these are actions ONLY GOD CAN DO!!!
Here in verses 13 we see the one thing WE CAN DO.
We can respond to God grace!!!!
We can acknowledge that When Jesus suffered in the cross it was for OUR SINS
We can acknowledge that EVERYTHING we are is ONLY because of JESUS CHRIST
We can COMMIT to LOVING THOSE WHO are still in the world.... JUST LIKE JESUS LOVED US.
“I LOVE BECAUSE HE FIRST LOVED ME.”
Why can’t I be all of these things and not feel this separation from God?
Psalm 51:16–17 ESV
16 For you will not delight in sacrifice, or I would give it; you will not be pleased with a burnt offering. 17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.
How many know that when you pray you are really conversing with God?!
I feel like that’s what we see.
King David is pouring his heart out and struggling with his huge sin.
By the time his prayer is over HE HAS A REVELATION.
Like God’s speak clarity into his heart.
God my sin is huge and I would offer 1k sacrifices if I thought it would help.
But those seem useless here.
The one good thing that came from this tragedy is that David realized
He is NOT alright.
That attitude is what led to his downfall.
No you don’t need to break your relationship with God to appreciate it.
YOU RELATIONSHIP WAS ALREADY A TRAIN-WRECK WHEN YOU ACCEPTED CHRIST!!!
You need to NEVER LET YOURSELF FORGET what Jesus has done for you!!!!
