1 Corinthians 12:1–3 ESV
1 Now concerning spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be uninformed. 2 You know that when you were pagans you were led astray to mute idols, however you were led. 3 Therefore I want you to understand that no one speaking in the Spirit of God ever says “Jesus is accursed!” and no one can say “Jesus is Lord” except in the Holy Spirit.
up till now Paul was talking about the external issues that was going on in the church.
he talked about issues like getting drunk in church, wearing a hoody and praying, Dummies for Jesus, building blocks, being faithful in lemon or honey situations, the wrap of life - tortilla, sons of God, anatomy of Christ, being runners, waiting of God etc.
now Paul is turning to the spiritual.
so far it was more on the outward actions that you do.
now Paul is introducing the spiritual aspect of life
he’s going to talk about the holy spirit and how he works in your life, about love resurrection and after life, the new bodies we are going to have, the collection of saints etc.
1 Corinthians 12:1 ESV
1 Now concerning spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be uninformed.
in the Greek text, you will not find the word gifts in this verse, however the translators have added the word gifts here probably for better understanding.
but i like the understanding of this verse without the gifts. because the next few verses and not just talking about the gifts, rather the person of the Holy Spirit.
these gifts are given by the holy spirit. we sometimes focus so much on the gifts that we forget the person of the Holy Spirit.
i think the better translation would be - Bretheren, now concerning the spiritual, i don't want you to be ignorant.....
Don’t be uninformed
here is an information that Paul is passing on to the church.
example is that you are travelling in business class and you don't use the business class lounge because you are not aware of the facilities.
or you have a medical insurance card in your pocket, but you don’t use it because you dint know about that facility.
there are a lot of things that probably we are unaware about in life
that's what Paul is saying here
litotes. n. The negation of something
in order to affirm the opposite; or understatement in order to give emphasis (λιτότης, “simplicity”). E.g., “Sheryl’s not a bad swimmer.” Also called meiosis. See Acts 14:28; 15:2; 21:39; Romans 1:16.
Gifts that come from the Spirit
Special ability that the Spirit gives
1 Corinthians 12:2 ESV
2 You know that when you were pagans you were led astray to mute idols, however you were led.
when you were led astray, or rather led away from the truth by some external force, to be enticed, impulse drove you, swept along,
you were led to idols.
who drove you there? who is the agent?
could be the local customs, priests, could be satanic forces as well. the agent could be a spiritual force. but the fact is that you were let to that dum idol or to a idol that cannot speak.
so you have something or someone influencing you to these speechless objects that cant talk
have you had people in your life, who gave you a wrong advise?
who made you do things that was not beneficial for you but for them
that is being led astray.
i know of people who have conned of people to sell their friends homes for a low value price to benefit for their other friends.
they spread rumors about the faults in your home, so that you will reduce the value of your home and then they will buy it.
when you are angry with some one. you think about all what he / she said and why he said it and the way he said it and how many times he said it and all these run in your mind.
that's what is meant by being led away.
how different is the new leading
the leading of the Holy Spirit
before it was a leading to dumb idols
now it is to someone who is alive, and to someone who talks
the testimony of Paul is that Jesus is alive. that's the difference
1 Corinthians 12:3 ESV
3 Therefore I want you to understand that no one speaking in the Spirit of God ever says “Jesus is accursed!” and no one can say “Jesus is Lord” except in the Holy Spirit.
before you were controlled by another or unholy spirit
before by a spirit that led you to acts that were not descent
to acts that is contrary to goodness
but now we have the holy spirit.
the comforter
New GPS (God’s Preferred System) - Holy Spirit.
Paul him self has done this
he used to curse Jesus
he knows what it is to be led by the other spirit.
Jesus is accursed ; meaning - jesus is a curse
Accursed ἀνάθεμα (anathema)
that which is dedicated as a votive offering, a votive offering
that which has been cursed, accursed. what is ‘devoted to the divinity’ can be either consecrated or accursed. The mng. of the word in the other NT passages moves definitely in the direction of the latter
Enhanced Strong’s Lexicon 2764 חֵרֶם, חֵרֶם

2764 חֵרֶם, חֵרֶם [cherem, or (Zech., cherem /khay·rem/] n m. From 2763; TWOT 744a, 745a; GK 3051 and 3052; 38 occurrences; AV translates as “net” nine times, “accursed thing” nine times, “accursed” four times, “curse” four times, “cursed thing” three times, “devoted” three times, “destruction” twice, “devoted thing” twice, “dedicated thing” once, and “destroyed” once. 1 a thing devoted, thing dedicated, ban, devotion. 2 a net, thing perforated. 3 have been utterly destroyed, (appointed to) utter destruction

Joshua 6:17 ESV
17 And the city and all that is within it shall be devoted to the Lord for destruction. Only Rahab the prostitute and all who are with her in her house shall live, because she hid the messengers whom we sent.
that they might be devoted to God for good, and for evil; that there was such a thing as being “accursed to the Lord” (Josh. 6:17; cf. Deut. 13:16; Num. 21:1–3); that of the spoil of the same city a part might be consecrated to the Lord in his treasury, and a part utterly destroyed, and yet this part and that be alike dedicated to Him (Josh. 6:19, 21), “sacred and devote”
Deuteronomy 7:26 NKJV
26 Nor shall you bring an abomination into your house, lest you be doomed to destruction like it. You shall utterly detest it and utterly abhor it, for it is an accursed thing.
Deuteronomy 21:23 ESV
23 his body shall not remain all night on the tree, but you shall bury him the same day, for a hanged man is cursed by God. You shall not defile your land that the Lord your God is giving you for an inheritance.
The Jews knew from Deuteronomy 21:23 that anyone who hung on a tree was under God’s curse. Jesus’ crucifixion would put him in that class of men if one believed he were an imposter [MNTC]. They said that Jesus was a malefactor justly condemned to die
so when jesus was crucified, people said that he was a curse.
Galatians 3:13 ESV
13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us—for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree”—
when a unfortunate incident happens to people, you generally tend to believe that there is a curse on that person.
when people heard the story of Jesus, anyone would naturally think that Jesus was cursed.
he was such a good man, did miracles, helped people and finally could not help himself.
that was what the thief on the cross said.
yes jesus was cursed, and he became cursed, so that we can be set free.
don't think that the issues that you are going through are because of the curse that is upon your life.
jesus became a curse so that you don't have to go through it.
hallelujah
this is awesome
we are set free.
imagine if there was a curse on your life, you have an inherent problem that is an issue.
jesus became your curse that you are set free.
just believe it
allow jesus to take that away from you.
lay your burdens upon him. you don't have to carry it.
intimidation, you have no right over my life
fear, you have nor right over my life.
sickness, you have no right over my life.
death, where is your victory. you have no right over my life.
1 Corinthians 12:3 ESV
3 Therefore I want you to understand that no one speaking in the Spirit of God ever says “Jesus is accursed!” and no one can say “Jesus is Lord” except in the Holy Spirit.
verse 3 says that - except by the holy spirit.
QUESTION—What is the significance of saying this ἐν πνεύματι ἁγίῳ ‘by the Holy Spirit’?
Paul means that a person can realize that Jesus is Lord only when the Holy Spirit is in that person’s heart [TNTC]
in order to say that, we should be under the influence of the Holy Spirit. under the guidance of the Holy Spirit
Holy Spirit is the instrument by which it is accomplished.
before you were led by other spirit. now with the Holy spirit. this Spirit is Holy and from God.
1 John 4:1–3 ESV
1 Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world. 2 By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, 3 and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you heard was coming and now is in the world already.
Romans 10:9 ESV
9 because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
the gift behind the gifts is spiritual and its the Holy Spirit
Who convits us when we sin?
John 16:7–8 ESV
7 Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. 8 And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment:
i have heard people say that ‘if i was my old self, i would have given him a piece of mind, or rather if i was not a believer, i could have done this or that.
if the red flags and going up, then we should be happy, its the Holy Spirit working in us.
Who teaches us about Jesus?
John 16:13–15 ESV
13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. 14 He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. 15 All that the Father has is mine; therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.
Who lives in us?
John 14:16–17 ESV
16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, 17 even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.
Ephesians 4:25–32 NLT
25 So stop telling lies. Let us tell our neighbors the truth, for we are all parts of the same body. 26 And “don’t sin by letting anger control you.” Don’t let the sun go down while you are still angry, 27 for anger gives a foothold to the devil. 28 If you are a thief, quit stealing. Instead, use your hands for good hard work, and then give generously to others in need. 29 Don’t use foul or abusive language. Let everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them. 30 And do not bring sorrow to God’s Holy Spirit by the way you live. Remember, he has identified you as his own, guaranteeing that you will be saved on the day of redemption. 31 Get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words, and slander, as well as all types of evil behavior. 32 Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you.
Acts 1:8 NLT
8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
WHO’S BEHIND THE WHEEL?

let us benefit from the new GPS which is the Holy Spirit.
