Psalm 23:4 KJV 1900
4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; Thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

The first published edition of the magazine National Geographic’s was printed on September 22, 1888. National Geographic was initially a scholarly journal but eventually moved to million of readers every month.

This magazine spotlights Geography which is the field of science devoted to the study of the lands, such as mountains, valleys, their features, and phenomena of the Earth and its planets.

National Geographic described a Valley as a flat, grassy expanse that ly’s between mountains, like a meadow;

What great pictures they published through out there magazines and even on the national television shows, But David here in psalm 23 takes us on a more in-dept look a Valley.

In the Old Testament a valley was a deep ravine or gorge; It was narrow, dark, and damp and usually encased by steep stone walls, making it virtually inescapable.

Valleys were frequently located at the foot of towering cliffs. They were extremely dangerous: being filled with snakes, wild beasts, and criminals lurking in the darkness.

Since grass grows in Palestine during a very short season, shepherds struggled to feed their flocks the rest of the year. Often, it became necessary to lead their sheep into valleys where green plants grew in the cool, damp soil at the bottom.

Many times passing through valleys was necessary at times in order to reach pastures on the other side.

Some scholars think the valley of the shadow of death was the name of an actual valley, an extremely dangerous one, through which shepherds and their flocks were forced to cross.

Valleys are symbols of the darkest times of life. The valley of the shadow of death speaks of life’s gravest circumstances, fearful occasions when death is a real possibility.

That’s why the Psalmist tells us that because the Lord is his Shepherd he wasn’t swallowed up by the valley he just walks in the shadow;

I got news for you that everyone of us walks in the shadow of death.

1. When you leave your house, in the shadow

2. On your way to work, in the shadow

3. On your Job, in the shadow

4. In the grocery store, in the shadow

5. sickness, in the shadow

6. COVID-19 , in the shadow

David testified that he was not afraid to walk through life’s darkest valleys, even being defenseless in himself, he was not alone for his Shepherd was with him.

A lot of us can testify that one of the greatest lessons we’ve learned while in our Valley moments is that the Shepherd never left our side.

CAN I STAY IN THE BOOK OF PSALM

Psalm 91:1–7 KJV 1900
1 He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. 2 I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: My God; in him will I trust. 3 Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, And from the noisome pestilence. 4 He shall cover thee with his feathers, And under his wings shalt thou trust: His truth shall be thy shield and buckler. 5 Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; Nor for the arrow that flieth by day; 6 Nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness; Nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday. 7 A thousand shall fall at thy side, And ten thousand at thy right hand; But it shall not come nigh thee.

The Psalmist then says, “Thy rod and thy staff they comfort me”!!!

David was fearless in the valley because he knew his Shepherd would protect him from all deadly threats, including his own waywardness.

His Shepherd would keep him close to His side in the darkness and would be with him through every step until he passed safely through to the light on the other side.
