Have you ever just wanted to go home? Maybe it was a business trip. Maybe it was a family gathering. Maybe it was even vacation. Not that you didn’t like vacation; you were just ready to be home in your own bed. Ahh....
There are songs about home and coming home.
John Denver
“Country roads, take me home, to the place I belong
West Virginia, mountain mama, Take me home, country roads.”
Lynard Skynyrd
“Sweet home Alabama, Where the skies are so blue
Sweet home Alabama, Lord, I’m coming home to you.”
Chris Tomlin
“I’m going home, where the streets are golden
Every chain is broken, oh I wanna go, Home
where every fear is gone, I’m in your open arms, where I belong
Home”
That’s where I’m going!
C.S. Lewis wrote: “If we find ourselves with a desire that nothing in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that we were made for another home.”
If you are a Christian, if you’ve been born again, if you’ve asked for forgiveness of your sins and accepted Jesus as your Lord and Savior, this world is NOT your home.
Philippians 3:20–21 NASB95
For our citizenship is in heaven, from which also we eagerly wait for a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ; who will transform the body of our humble state into conformity with the body of His glory, by the exertion of the power that He has even to subject all things to Himself.
According to Scripture we are “aliens”, “strangers”, “exiles” in this world.
Before the election, David Platt wrote an article entitled, “Before you vote: Seven Questions that Christians should Ask.”
“I couldn’t help but draw one conclusion about the church amidst the political climate in our country: we are sick. We are so quick to accuse, belittle, cancel, distrust, disparage, deride, and divide from one another. And it’s not just the people outside the church; it’s people inside the church, too. And it’s not just this or that side; it’s all of us, including me. We are swimming in toxic political waters that are poisoning the unity Jesus desires for His church, and we are polluting the glory Jesus deserves through us in the world.” -David Platt
We don’t worship the president or a past president. We don’t worship a donkey or an elephant. We worship Lion and the Lamb Jesus Christ! This morning in our text Jesus will powerfully remind His disciples of this glorious truth/promise and help them to prepare for His crucifixion.
Turn to John 14:1-6 (read)
A little context here. Chapters 13-17 are known as the “farewell discourse”. These four chapters literally over Thursday night before Jesus would go to the cross. John 13
Last Supper - came into Jerusalem earlier that week with people shouting for Jesus and the disciples were thinking some big things were going to come for them.
Jesus began washing there feet and said that one of them would actually betray Him.
Wait. What? Who? Is it me? You? Then Jesus says...
John 13:31-33
Peter speaks up and asks Him, “Lord, where are you going?” Peter and Jesus go back and forth.
Jesus says Peter will deny Him 3 times
Disciples confused, anxious, frightened, and sad
Anybody feel that way today? If that is you, Jesus has something for you today!

Promised Peace (v.1)

Troubled - “disturbed, concerned, worried”
Jesus is hours away from being arrested, falsely accused, beaten, and crucified.
Jesus’ emotions????? He is more worried about comforting his disciples.
Jesus knows there hearts and knows they are troubled.
Ever heard of the song Bridge over troubled waters? The word picture is water that has been “stirred up”. It can mean inner turmoil or confusion. So he comforts His disciples.
Peter would later write:
1 Peter 5:7 NASB95
casting all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you.
To those of you struggling today Jesus wants to give you this peace. Listen to His words in
Matthew 11:28–30 NASB95
“Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. “Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. “For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”
"Believe in God. Believe also in Me.” Jesus tells them to keep believing in God. You can’t see God but you believe in Him. This is a personal, relational trust. Peter wrote:
1 Peter 1:8–9 NASB95
and though you have not seen Him, you love Him, and though you do not see Him now, but believe in Him, you greatly rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory, obtaining as the outcome of your faith the salvation of your souls.
Calm down guys! It’s going to be o.k. This will work out for my glory. Trust me! Listen to Jesus at the end of the chapter:
John 14:27 NASB95
“Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your heart be troubled, nor let it be fearful.

Promised Place (vs.2-4)

dwelling places, rooms, mansions - does not mean some will live in shacks and some will live in mansions. It just means that there is plenty of space.
It’s the idea of permanency.
Just like 2 of the disciples went ahead of Jesus to prepare a room for the Last Supper, this is what Jesus says He will do. Going to the Father’s house ahead of them to prepare the way for them.
Jesus promised He would come back for them.
1 Thessalonians 4:16–17 NASB95
For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive and remain will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we shall always be with the Lord.
Jesus says, “you know where I’m going.”
Disciples are like, “Wait. What?!” Head exploding!
Thomas speaks up. John 16:5 C’mon man! Give us something to go on. A star to follow? Pillar of cloud? Pillar of fire?
Jesus makes this statement
John 14:6

Promised Path (v.6)

Early church, believers were not called Christians, until Jews in Antioch came up with the term as an insult. Followers were called “the people of the way.”
Acts 24:14 NASB95
“But this I admit to you, that according to the Way which they call a sect I do serve the God of our fathers, believing everything that is in accordance with the Law and that is written in the Prophets;
Jesus responds to Thomas’ question by saying He is THE way, not A way
Greek word road or traveled path
William Barclay writes “Jesus doesn’t just give us advice and directions. He takes us by the hand and leads us. He strengthens and guides us personally each day. And He doesn’t tell us about the way. He is the Way!”
When Jesus died on the cross the vail of the temple, separating God from man was torn into.
Jesus’ death in our place bridged the gap back to God.
Which path are you on?
Acts 4:12 NASB95
“And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved.”
1 Timothy 2:5 NASB95
For there is one God, and one mediator also between God and men, the man Christ Jesus,
