Today, we will cover these questions.
The Why’s
Why does God only give certain people in the body the gift of tongues (Or any other gift for that matter)?

The What’s
What does the gift of tongues do for the corporate body of Christ?
There Where’s
Where does the individual receive the message that comes through the gift of tongues in the corporate body?
The When’s
When can an individual operate in the gift of tongues when concerning the corporate body?

Who can be used for the gift to be in operation in the body?
The How’s
How can the gift of tongues be used to edify the corporate body?
How is it to operate?
How do you know whether the gift in operation is from God or just someone showboating or abusing the gift?

(GOD’s Word!)

The Why’s

Why does God only give certain people in the body the gift of tongues (or any other gift)?

Because God gives the gifts as they are needed to those He determines to give them to.
1 Corinthians 12:7
OUR WEEKLY MEMORY VERSE - 1 CORINTHIANS 12:7
1 Corinthians 12:7 NIV84
7 Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.
1 Corinthians 12:11
1 Corinthians 12:11 NIV84
11 All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he gives them to each one, just as he determines.
1 Corinthians 12:18-20
1 Corinthians 12:18–20 NIV84
18 But in fact God has arranged the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be. 19 If they were all one part, where would the body be? 20 As it is, there are many parts, but one body.
Why do we sometimes hear people speaking in tongues in the corporate setting during P&W without an interpretation?
Two different things:
The person speaking in tongues is doing it more privately (not lifting their voice so the whole congregation can hear) in prayer and praise to God.
1 Corinthians 14:28
1 Corinthians 14:28 NIV84
28 If there is no interpreter, the speaker should keep quiet in the church and speak to himself and God.
The person that God wanted to use to give the interpretation is not being obedient to give the interpretation.
1 Corinthians 14:32
1 Corinthians 14:32 NIV84
32 The spirits of prophets are subject to the control of prophets.

The What’s

What does the gift of tongues do for the corporate body of Christ?

Two Different Things:
It shows the manifestation of the Spirit in the service.
1 Corinthians 12:7
1 Corinthians 12:7 NIV84
7 Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.
1 Corinthians 12:11
1 Corinthians 12:11 NIV84
11 All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he gives them to each one, just as he determines.
But, by itself it does not edify the corporate body.
1 Corinthians 14:6
1 Corinthians 14:6 NIV84
6 Now, brothers, if I come to you and speak in tongues, what good will I be to you, unless I bring you some revelation or knowledge or prophecy or word of instruction?
1 Corinthians 14:9
1 Corinthians 14:9 NIV84
9 So it is with you. Unless you speak intelligible words with your tongue, how will anyone know what you are saying? You will just be speaking into the air.
1 Corinthians 14:16
1 Corinthians 14:16 NIV84
16 If you are praising God with your spirit, how can one who finds himself among those who do not understand say “Amen” to your thanksgiving, since he does not know what you are saying?
1 Corinthians 14:19
1 Corinthians 14:19 NIV84
19 But in the church I would rather speak five intelligible words to instruct others than ten thousand words in a tongue.

The Where’s

Where does the individual receive the message that comes through the gift of tongues in the corporate body?

From God through the Spirit.
1 Corinthians 12:7
1 Corinthians 12:7 NIV84
7 Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.
1 Corinthians 12:11
1 Corinthians 12:11 NIV84
11 All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he gives them to each one, just as he determines.

The When’s

When can an individual operate in the gift of tongues when concerning the corporate body?

When the Spirit moves upon them and enables them to give the message.
1 Corinthians 12:7
1 Corinthians 12:7 NIV84
7 Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.
1 Corinthians 12:11
1 Corinthians 12:11 NIV84
11 All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he gives them to each one, just as he determines.
When there is an interpreter.
1 Corinthians 14:27-28
1 Corinthians 14:27–28 NIV84
27 If anyone speaks in a tongue, two—or at the most three—should speak, one at a time, and someone must interpret. 28 If there is no interpreter, the speaker should keep quiet in the church and speak to himself and God.
Note: There must be someone present that is baptized in the Holy Spirit so that the gift of interpretation can be given. So, either the one giving the message in tongues will interpret, or another person who is baptized in the Holy Spirit can give the interpretation.
1 Corinthians 14:13
1 Corinthians 14:13 NIV84
13 For this reason anyone who speaks in a tongue should pray that he may interpret what he says.

The Who’s

Who is the initiator of the gift of tongues in the corporate body?

The Spirit of God
1 Corinthians 12:7
1 Corinthians 12:7 NIV84
7 Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.
1 Corinthians 12:11
1 Corinthians 12:11 NIV84
11 All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he gives them to each one, just as he determines.

Who can be used for the gift to be in operation in the body?

Any person that is saved and baptized in the Holy Spirit.
Any person that God has given the gift to.

The How’s

How can the gift of tongues be used to edify the corporate body?

1 Corinthians 14:3-5
1 Corinthians 14:3–5 NIV84
3 But everyone who prophesies speaks to men for their strengthening, encouragement and comfort. 4 He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church. 5 I would like every one of you to speak in tongues, but I would rather have you prophesy. He who prophesies is greater than one who speaks in tongues, unless he interprets, so that the church may be edified.
1 Corinthians 14:13
1 Corinthians 14:13 NIV84
13 For this reason anyone who speaks in a tongue should pray that he may interpret what he says.
1 Corinthians 14:26
1 Corinthians 14:26 NIV84
26 What then shall we say, brothers? When you come together, everyone has a hymn, or a word of instruction, a revelation, a tongue or an interpretation. All of these must be done for the strengthening of the church.

How is it to operate?

In order:

1 Corinthians 14:33
1 Corinthians 14:33 NIV84
33 For God is not a God of disorder but of peace. As in all the congregations of the saints,

It will come in the following order:

The manifestation of the tongue
The interpretation of the tongue
1 Corinthians 14:26-32
1 Corinthians 14:26–32 NIV84
26 What then shall we say, brothers? When you come together, everyone has a hymn, or a word of instruction, a revelation, a tongue or an interpretation. All of these must be done for the strengthening of the church. 27 If anyone speaks in a tongue, two—or at the most three—should speak, one at a time, and someone must interpret. 28 If there is no interpreter, the speaker should keep quiet in the church and speak to himself and God. 29 Two or three prophets should speak, and the others should weigh carefully what is said. 30 And if a revelation comes to someone who is sitting down, the first speaker should stop. 31 For you can all prophesy in turn so that everyone may be instructed and encouraged. 32 The spirits of prophets are subject to the control of prophets.

How do you know whether the gift in operation is from God or just someone showboating or abusing the gift?

It is to be received by faith as it is compared/held up to the standard of the Word.
Acts 17:11
Acts 17:11 NIV84
11 Now the Bereans were of more noble character than the Thessalonians, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true.
1 John 4:1
1 John 4:1 NIV84
1 Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.
It will edify and build up the body (whether encouraging or corrective)
1 Corinthians 12:7
1 Corinthians 12:7 NIV84
7 Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.
1 Corinthians 14:12
1 Corinthians 14:12 NIV84
12 So it is with you. Since you are eager to have spiritual gifts, try to excel in gifts that build up the church.
1 Corinthians 14:26
1 Corinthians 14:26 NIV84
26 What then shall we say, brothers? When you come together, everyone has a hymn, or a word of instruction, a revelation, a tongue or an interpretation. All of these must be done for the strengthening of the church.
It will exalt or bring glory to Jesus Christ.
John 15:26
John 15:26 NIV84
26 “When the Counselor comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father, he will testify about me.
John 16:14
John 16:14 NIV84
14 He will bring glory to me by taking from what is mine and making it known to you.

(YOU)

So, the question is what are YOU going to do about this? Do you desire the fullness of God that can help you to be a witness and to build yourselves and the body of Christ up in the Holy Spirit?

CONCLUSION

(WE)

I want you to envision living a life full of the Holy Spirit! A life where you experience the joy of knowing that God is always working for you. A life that when you are not sure of something because of whatever conflict, that you can go to prayer in the Holy Spirit and be encouraged and built up. That you give yourselves to God and the Holy Spirit to be used to edify the corporate body using the gifts God operates in and through you.
