Acts 2:1-13

Introduction

We want to demonstrate to this community and city the life of Jesus!

Pentecost was a great festival  (Leviticus 23:15-ff)

What did it involve?

Ø       Up to one million Jews in Jerusalem

Ø       It was a time of great rejoicing.

Ø       Followed Passover by 50 days

Ø       Celebrated for 1500 years

Ø       Grain was mixed with oil made into two loaves

Ø       10 animals sacrificed (7 lambs, 1 bull & 2 rams)

What did it mean?

Ø       Ten is the number of completion & the blood shed represents the completed work of Christ.

Ø       The oil in the bread represents the Holy Spirit

Ø       The two loaves represent the church - Jew and Gentile

Ø       The leaven in these loaves reminds us of our sinful nature.

The ingredients of a church aflame – a church that can and will make a difference in this community/city.

1A.      Supernatural Power

God gave a demonstration of His power.  This power was visualized, vocalized, vitalized.

1B.       The power was visualized (symbolized).  (2:2-3)

The sound of the wind was a symbol of the Spirit (John 3:8).

Ø       Invisible

Ø       irresistible

Ø       Indispensable

A preacher was going to preach on the wind being an emblem of the Spirit of God and he said, "Who really would know the most about the wind?" He said, "I know who I'll talk to.

There's an old sea captain down here and he sailed by the wind, one of those old schooners." And he went down and he talked to him and he said, "Captain tell me everything you know about the wind." He thought he was going to get a long speech and the captain said, "I'll make it brief. I know very little about the wind. It is so mysterious."

He said, "I'll tell you what I do know. I know how to set my sails."

I don't want to be able to understand the Holy Spirit, who can.  But I want to know how to be able to set my sails when the wind of God's spirit blows.

The sight of the fire was a symbol of the Spirit.  (2:3)

Ø       Spreads

Ø       Cleanses

Ø       Consumes

Ø       Warms

Ø       Illuminates

Ø       Energizes

2B.       The power was vocalized.  (2:4-5)

They spoke in understandable languages  (6-8)

The gift of tongues was given as a sign of God’s judgment on the unbelieving Jews.

1 Corinthians 14:21-22 (NKJV) 21In the law it is written: “With men of other tongues and other lips I will speak to this people; And yet, for all that, they will not hear Me,”says the Lord.

The gift of tongues was as a means of evangelizing the lost.

1 Corinthians 14:22 (NKJV) 22Therefore tongues are for a sign, not to those who believe but to unbelievers; but prophesying is not for unbelievers but for those who believe.

Ø       The gift of tongues is mentioned three times in the book of Acts.

Ø       Each time Jews are present and unbelieving Jews are in the background

The gift of tongues is a temporary and transitional gift.

Ø       Paul said that tongues will cease of themselves

Ø       The mark of spirituality is not speaking in tongues, the most carnal church in the NT majored on tongues.

Ø       Real spirituality is demonstrated by controlling the one tongue you have.

3B.       The power was vitalized.  (2:4)

“They were all filled.”

Baptism once for all

Indwelling

Sealing

Filling is conditional  (Ephesians 5:8)

Ø       Filling makes weaklings into witnessing

Anointing

Jesus was anointed with the Holy Ghost and power

Ø       The anointing is a special touch for a specific task.

2A.      Scriptural Preaching  (2:14)

(2:22-26) He spoke of the manner of Jesus, the meaning of Jesus’ death, the miracle of Jesus’ resurrection, The magnificence of Jesus’ reign.

3A.      Saved People  (2:37-41)

1B.       They were convicted by the Lord  (2:37)

2B.       They were converted by the Lord  (2:38)

Ø       Change of mind about sin, self, and God.

Ø       Repentance and faith are inseperatable joined.

3B.       There is a confession of the Lord  (2:38)

Ø       Baptism is an outward expression of an inward experience

“eis” = at, for, because (Luke11:32)

Ø       Baptism is like a wedding ring.

4B.       They are controlled by the Lord (2:38)

Ø       When you are saved you receive the Holy Spirit who controls your life

Ø       Salvation is not believing something or achieving something it is receiving someone.

5B.       They continued with the Lord  (2:41-42)

Ø       Jesus did not call us to make decisions he called us to make disciples

Ø       You do everything else but if you do not continue, you are not saved.

Ø       Salvation is a present experience.  Are you trusting Christ as your personal savior.

Ø       The Bible never tells us to look back at a past experience but to look to a present reality.

4A.      A Spiritual Program  (2:42-47)

1B.       Bible study  (2:42)

2B.       Fellowship  (2:42)

3B.       Worship  (2:42c)

4B.       Ministry  (2:43-45)

5B.       Evangelism  (2:46-47)

Ø       By Acts 4 there were over 25,000 member

Ø       G. Campbell Morgan estimated that there were 250,000 member in six months!
