Hebrews 11:30; (Joshua 5:13-6:21)

Introduction

God's hall of fame

Matthew 9:29 Then He touched their eyes, saying, "According to your faith let it be to you."

Not according to your…

Ø      Fame

Ø      Family

Ø      Friends

Ø      Feeling

But, according to your FAITH!

Biblical background

Jericho stood between God's people and God's promise

Jericho was a great city

Ø      Antiquity

Ø      Iniquity

Ø      Enormity

Jericho seemed to be unconquerable.

Modern parallel

God's people still face obstacles.

Satan will be certain that there are obstacles between us and the fulfillment of God's will.

Faith is the link that binds our nothingness with His almightiness.

How we can have Conquering Faith…

Joshua 5:13

1A.      We Must Enter into the Lord's Presence (Joshua 5:13-15)

1B.      We must encounter the Lord personally.  (5:13-14a)

A stranger encountered Joshua.

Joshua asked him “whose side are you on?”

Ø      Neither, He had come not to take sides; he came to take over.

Ø      This was the pre-incarnate Christ.

2B.      We must worship the Lord properly.  (5:14b-15)

Worship requires surrender.  (14b)

Ø      Joshua surrendered himself to the Lord

Ø      Faith never grows in the heart of a rebel

Ø      Stop trying to get God on your side and get on God's side!

Worship relies on God’s Word.  (5:14c)

Ø      Joshua did not ask for a miracle but for a message!

Ø      He wanted a Word from God.

Ø      Faith always results in obedience to God’s word.

Worship results in greater faith.  (5:15)

Ø      Joshua became God conscious

Ø      Joshua learned to glance at the problem and gaze at the Lord.

2A.      We Must Execute the Lord's Plan (6:1-5)

1B.      Believe the Lord's Word (6:2, 15-16)

We must receive God’s Word (6:2)

Romans 10:17 So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

We must believe God’s Word (6:15-16)

Ø      You cannot believe God for something and make it so; you must believe something because God says it is so.

Hebrews 11:1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

2B.      Begin the Lord's work.  (6:3-5)

It was a simple plan

Ø      God was testing their obedience.

It was a strange plan

Ø      It is not our job to understand why it is our job to obey.

Ø      The Bible is not primarily a book to be explained it is a book to be believed and obeyed.

3B.      Continue in the Lord's way.  (6:14-15)

The Lord has prepared the way.

Isaiah 28:16 Therefore thus says the Lord GOD:  “Behold, I lay in Zion a stone for a foundation, A tried stone, a precious cornerstone, a sure foundation; Whoever believes will not act hastily.

The Lord has promised to bless us along the way.

Hebrews 10:36 For you have need of endurance, so that after you have done the will of God, you may receive the promise:

Ø      Do not give up or let up.

3A.      We Can Enjoy the Fulfillment of the Lord's Purpose (6:20-21)

1B.      The fortresses of fear and failure will fall.  (6:20)

God works wonders when His people trust Him.

We can know victory not by trying but by trusting.

2B.      The force of God’s wrath will be felt.  (6:21)

God judged the people of Jericho because of…

Ø      Their immorality

Ø      Their unbelief

Ø      Their unrepentant hearts

God had been patient

Genesis 15:16 "But in the fourth generation they shall return here, for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet complete."

Leviticus 18:25 'For the land is defiled; therefore I visit the punishment of its iniquity upon it, and the land vomits out its inhabitants.

Ø      God had waited and warned and they refused to repent.

Ø      Finally, God's wrath was released.

Application

Without faith in Christ, you will face God's judgement

You had better have faith in God.

America is ripe for judgement

Soon the trumpet will sound, a shout will be heard, and afterwards God's wrath will fall.

Are you on the Lord’s side today?
